Product Description
The discipline of landscape ecology has matured rapidly over the past few decades, generating a wealth of knowledge that can be used to enhance forest policy development and management. However, much of this knowledge has yet to be applied in practice.Forest Landscape Ecology: Transferring Knowledge to Practice is the first book to introduce landscape ecologists to the discipline of knowledge transfer. The book considers knowledge transfer in general, critically examines aspects of transfer that are unique to forest landscape ecology, and reviews several case studies of successful applications for policy developers and forest managers in North America. Readers are encouraged to recognize the value of sharing their knowledge, and to understand their role in active knowledge transfer. The intent is to connect, as seamlessly and effectively as possible, ecological principles to policy and practice. This book is written for researchers, academics and students in landscape ecology and related fields, as well as policymakers and land and resource managers who are interested in landscape-level approaches.About the Editors:Ajith H. Perera is a research scientist and leads the Forest Landscape Ecology Program at the Ontario Forest Research Institute. Lisa J. Buse is a forest biologist who coordinates technology transfer for the Ontario Forest Research Institute. Thomas R. Product Description
Deforestation is occurring at an alarming rate in many parts of the world, causing destruction of natural habitat and fragmentation of what remains. Nowhere is this problem more pressing than in the Amazon rainforest, which is rapidly vanishing in the face of enormous pressure from humans to exploit it. This book presents the results of the longest-running and most comprehensive study of forest fragmentation ever undertaken, the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project (BDFFP) in central Amazonia, the only experimental study of tropical forest fragmentation in which baseline data are available before isolation from continuous forest took place.

A joint project of Brazil's National Institute for Research in Amazonia and the U.S. Smithsonian Institution, the BDFFP has investigated the many effects that habitat fragmentation has on plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates. The book provides an overview of the BDFFP, reports on its case studies, looks at forest ecology and tree genetics, and considers what issues are involved in establishing ... Read more

Product Description
Over the century, forest management has evolved from a field dominated by the "conservationist" perspective--with humans exploiting natural resources--to one that emphasizes biocentrism, in which forests are seen as dynamic ecosystems.Yet despite this progressive shift, the assault on our forests continues through overgrazing of rangelands, lumbering, eroding mountainsides, fire suppression, and threats to the habitats of endangered species.Forests under Fire takes a closer look at the people calling the shots in our national forests, from advocates of timber harvesting to champions of ecosystem management, and calls for a reassessment of our priorities--before our forests are gone. ... Beautifully written and photographed, The Cook Forest:An Island in Time invites the majestic world of an eastern old-growth forest.Whether you are inclined to sit back and dream about remote wild places or whether you wish to explore them for yourself, this book is for you.An Island in Time invites you to join in the appreciation and preservation of one of Nature's great gifts. In this landmark volume, Anthony E. Cook, the grandson of the man who deeded the Cook Forest to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, captures the spirit and rare beauty of this ancient forest with passion and an eye schooled in Nature's artistry. An Island in Time is an unforgettable celebration of a North American treasure. The Cook Forest is one of the most significant old-growth eastern hemlock forests still growing today. Its very existence is a tribute to one of the earliest conservation efforts in the United States. The book's remarkable historical photographs depict the rugged life forged by the pioneers of this country as they settled in the remote corners of the frontier. The book also tells the story of the incredible struggle of the Cook family and conservationists in the early 1900s to preserve the remnant Cook Forest-a struggle that helped inspire the creation of many of our national parks. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia
Thoroughly enjoyed the gorgeous photography of my childhood haunts- I went to grammar school in the Cook Forest area and not long ago when a friend was planning to visit for the first time I handed her this book (I work in a library) as a preview-she was hooked. Mr. Cook has captured all the untouched magic of Pennsylvania forests and packaged it up so we can all carry about a bit of solitude in our busy lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book made me plan a trip there!
This beautiful book of photographs is begun with a fascinating description of the forest's history. I didn't realize that Pennsylvania had such a dramatic history involving the early timber industry and later withconservationists. This book quickly makes you realize how lucky we are tohave old-growth forests in America.

5-0 out of 5 stars big forests, small pollinators
I had never contemplated anything like the rain forest of Borneo, where trees and flowers and most of the biology takes place over 100 feet above the soil. This book ranks first in garnering this 'educated' person's appreciation for how such a magnificent and stately system as a tropical rain forest works. I had no idea so many animals were involved in getting pollen between flowers on different trees, so that those trees could reproduce. It is, obviously, very difficult. If I could be a thrips or a beetle or a bee, I could see where and when the peak reproduction of the rain forest occurs, while I fly to the flowers high in the air, in the 60 meters between the base and the canopy of the forest trees. Me, I am easy, and it is enough to read an account of what takes place in this cradle of tropical forest diversity and life. ... Read more

Product Description
More often than not, when people think of a neotropical forest, what comes to mind is a rain forest, rather than a dry forest. Just as typically, when they imagine a savanna, they visualize the African plains, rather than those dry woodlands and grasslands found in the Neotropics. These same preconceptions can be found among scientists, as these neotropical biomes receive nowhere near the attention they should - in terms of both research and conservation -considering the amount of land they encompass and the diversity of vegetation they contain.

Neotropical Savannas and Dry Forests: Plant Diversity, Biogeography, and Conservation provides an engaging synthesis of information on the plant diversity and geography, as well as the conservation status, of these species-rich areas. This impressive compilation is the result of a plant diversity symposium that took place during an international conference on tropical savannas and seasonally dry forests held in 2003. Fifty leading scientists, representing a variety of disciplines have contributed to the chapters of this book in an effort to address three questions:

  • What are the patterns of diversity, species-richness and endemism of the floras of neotropical seasonally dry forest and savannas?
  • How and why did this endemism and diversity arise?
  • Are these ecosystems adequately protected and, if not, which areas should be elevated into priorities for conservation, and how can this be best achieved?

This work is the first extensive compilation of the patterns of plant biodiversity in these neotropical ecosystems. The overview also provides a summary of what is known of their evolutionary history, including an examination of the links to the development of analogous vegetation in Africa. In contrast to previously published titles that emphasize ecology and physiology, this work focuses on plant biodiversity and reviews molecular phylogenetic and molecular population genetic approaches to discovering biogeographic history.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first systematic treatment
This book is the result of a plant diversity symposium that composed part of a conference held at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh in September 2003. As with most scientific books of this type where the information is the result of research that was conducted very recently, there are numerous contributors, more than fifty. They come from most of the world: England, United States, Bolivia, Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, Switzerland, France, and many others.

Most of the book covers Latin and South America with discussions on the types of plants found in these environments. Only one chapter is devoted to Africa, the other large area where savannas and seasonally dry forests are to be found. And it primarily discusses the differences.

This is the first extensive compilation of the patterns of plant diversity in these neotropical ecosystems. It is a monumental work.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first extensive compilation focused specifically upon patterns of plant biodiversity in the species-rich savannas
Collaboratively compiled, organized and edited by the team of R. Toby Pennington, James A Ratter (both of whom are with the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh) and Gwilym P. Lewis (from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew), "Neotropical Savannas And Seasonally Dry Forests: Plant Diversity, Biogeography, And Conservations" is the latest addition to the prestigious 'Systematics Association Special Volumes' series (under the general editorial supervision of Alan Warren (Department of Zoology, The Natural History Museum, London, England) and the first extensive compilation focused specifically upon patterns of plant biodiversity in the species-rich savannas and seasonally dry forests of the neotropics. This scholarly and expert 484-page overview (contributed to by 59 contributors from around the world) succinctly summarizes what is currently known of the evolutionary history of these particular ecosystems, including links to the development of analogous vegetation in Africa. "Neotropical Savannas And Seasonally Dry Forests" focus on plant biodiversity and the molecular phylogenies and molecular population genetics for uncovering the biogeographic history of these ecosystems making it a seminal and necessary addition to professional and academic library Biological Sciences and Environmental Studies reference collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book
This was purchased for a our local library. Can't comment on the book itself, as I haven't read it.But shipping was fast and book was in the condition promised.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible abuse of the Dr Seuss name!
We have quite a few Dr. Seuss books, and believe we got this one from shop at our local zoo.

It simply doesn't come close to the Seuss classics.

The premise of the original Dr Seuss works was to present an engaging, fun story while only using a limited vocabulary and some fun rhymes, aimed at very young kids.

This story uses toddler-unfriendly words such as "Epiphytes", and horrible, unnatural rhymes that make me cringe whenever I read the book out loud. Add some over-simplified moralizing which flies over the head of a 4 year old anyway, and you have very poor book.

As I read this book, I can almost feel the rumble as the real Dr Seuss turns in his grave- Mercifully my children gravitate towards the "Cat in the hat", "One fish two fish", "Green eggs and ham" and "Fox in socks" so I don't have to read it too often. The only consolation for me when reading it has been the thought that I will be able to give it a review on Amazon - so here it is. Dont buy this book.

I will conclude with a note to the "Cat in the hat's learning library" : If you really want to save the rain forest, don't waste paper printing junk books like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Introduction to the Rain Forest
I find this an outstanding book to introduce the rainforest to elementary children. The strength of the book is the many rainforest topics and themes it introduces. These topics and themes can then be elaborated on at a later time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Teaching Tool for Children
If I ran the rainforest is a great way to teach children about the rainforest.Including all four floors of the rainforest and which animals inhabit them. It also talks about how millions of acres are cut down every year and how we need to save the rain forest. I highly recommend this book and all of "The Cat in the Hat's learning library" series. They are great teaching tools for children.

    Product Description

Shaped by fire for thousands of years, the forests of the western United States are as adapted to periodic fires as they are to the region's soils and climate. Our widespread practice of ignoring the vital role of fire is costly in both ecological and economic terms, with consequences including the decline of important fire-dependent tree and undergrowth species, increasing density and stagnation of forests, epidemics of insects and diseases, and the high potential for severe wildfires.

Flames in Our Forest explains those problems and presents viable solutions to them. It explores the underlying historical and ecological reasons for the problems associated with our attempts to exclude fire and examines how some of the benefits of natural fire can be restored Chapters consider:

    • the history of American perceptions and uses of fire in the forest
    • how forest fires burn
    • effects of fire on the soil, water, and air
    • methods for uncovering the history and effects of past fires
    • prescribed fire and fuel treatments for different zones in the landscape

Flames in Our Forest presents a new picture of the role of fire in maintaining forests, describes the options available for restoring the historical effects of fires, and considers the implications of not doing so. It will help readers appreciate the importance of fire in forests and gives a nontechnical overview of the scientific knowledge and tools available for sustaining western forests by mimicking and restoring the effects of natural fire regimes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Why We Need a Policy Shift in Wildland Fire Fighting
During this past summer, at least 12 firefighters have died tragically while fighting fires in California forests. Most, if not all, of these deaths occurred while battling fires that were natural occurring, lightning sparked fires in wilderness areas that were miles away from any buildings, towns or property of value.

Since fire exclusion became policy in our forests, the amount of fuel has increased steadily to the point where of forests, particularly in wilderness areas, are tinder boxes ready to explode. Some of that happened this summer, but there are many millions of acres in the West in a similar position. In addition to risking lives, we are spending millions and millions of dollars to protect something that really does not need protection.

This book offers a reasonable alternative to continued fire suppression in wildland areas and offers solutions that are workable and will return forests to their natural states. It is well written, heavily footnoted and presented in a style that allows readers with a minimum amount of knowledge of the science to be able to understand the information. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best summary of the current fire environment in North America today
Steve Arno is one of America's premier fire scientists.A solid professional with a knack for writing about technical things in layman's terms, Arno's book is 180 pages of succinct, highly readable, very accurate writing about this critical issue. What is happening with fire in America today? Why does it matter? What do we know? What have we learned? What can we do about it?If you don't read another book about fire, this is the one.Arno's followup, Mimicking Nature's Fire, is an outstanding primer on prescribed fire.I can't wait for Steve's next effort. This is the kind of science that anyone can understand and his conclusions that fire is both necessary and out of balance are compelling, as are his recommendations for where we go from here.To continue to suffer fires like the recent Tahoe disaster, human-caused in every way, with a book like this already showing us the way to more responsible living in the fire environment is just criminal malpractice on the part of citizens and angencies who continue to ignore the truths that Arno so clearly sees.Read this book and then buy a copy for your Senator. ... Levinson throws out information in a waterfall of a list--simply for this is after all a children's book. She compares both types of rain forests: temperate versus tropical. All the good basic information is giving, plus a few random facts just because. Each page is filled to the brim with labeled illustrations of plants and animals. Product Description
Although a few texts on forest hydrology are available, they cover very little, if any, background on water resources. On the other hand, books dealing with water resources do not cover topics on forest-water relations. The one exception to this is Forest Hydrology: An Introduction to Water and Forests. Now with the publication of a revised edition, this volume adds information from recent studies to go even further in providing an introduction to forest hydrology that brings water resources and forest-water relations into a single practical and comprehensive volume

Focusing on processes and general principles, the first six chapters provide an introduction and basic background in water and water resources, while the last seven chapters look at the impact of forests on water. Between these two groupings is a chapter that serves as an entry to the study of forest impacts on water resources, describing forests and forest characteristics important to water circulation, sediment movement, and stream habitat. This second edition also features new informationon forests and flooding, forest and stream habitat, snow vaporization processes, and GIS methods in hydrology research, examples on evaporation estimates, and a new appendix on forest interception measurements.

Employing examples and case studies, the book provides tools to help natural resource managers play an active role in policymaking and land-use planning, and in developing partnerships with stakeholders. It also offers unique perspectives for addressing urban sprawl. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Compreshensive Treatment of Forest Hydrology
The discussions on forest hydrology contained in these chapters are quite comprehensive, making this one of the most thorough forest hydrology texts I have read. This makes this text an excellent resource for anyone interested in forest hydrology. It is thoroughly annotated, making it a great reference as well. The material in the last chapter, especially the section on the calculations involved in the Wagon Wheel Gap study is an excellent presentation.I know of no other textbook that includes these techniques with a worked example and discussion of the same data set.The material contained in the appendix is also quite useful.Overall, this book is one of the most comprehensive available, providing readers with a thorough knowledge of the subject and an understanding of management implications. ... Product Description

The essays collected here offer important new reflections on the multiple images of and rhetoric surrounding the rain forest. The slogan “Save the Rain Forest!”—emblazoned on glossy posters of tall trees wreathed in vines and studded with monkeys and parrots—promotes the popular image of a marvelously wild and vulnerable rain forest. Although representations like these have fueled laudable rescue efforts, in many ways they have done more harm than good, as these essays show. Such icons tend to conceal both the biological variety of rain forests and the diversity of their human inhabitants. They also frequently obscure the specific local and global interactions that are as much a part of today’s rain forests as are the array of plants and animals. In attending to these complexities, this volume focuses on specific portrayals of rain forests and the consequences of these characterizations for both forest inhabitants and outsiders.

From diverse disciplines—history, archaeology, sociology, literature, law, and cultural anthropology—the contributors provide case studies from Latin America, Asia, and Africa. They point the way toward a search for a rain forest that is both a natural entity and a social history, an inhabited place and a shifting set of ideas. The essayists demonstrate how the single image of a wild and yet fragile forest became fixed in the popular mind in the late twentieth century, thereby influencing the policies of corporations, environmental groups, and governments. Such simplistic conceptions, In Search of the Rain Forest shows, might lead companies to tout their “green” technologies even as they try to downplay the dissenting voices of native populations. Or they might cause a government to create a tiger reserve that displaces peaceful peasants while opening the doors to poachers and bandits. By encouraging a nuanced understanding of distinctive, constantly evolving forests with different social and natural histories, this volume provides an important impetus for protection efforts that take into account the rain forest in all of its complexity.
