In France, Hugo's literary fame comes first from his poetry but also rests upon his novels and his dramatic achievements. Among many volumes of poetry, Les Contemplations and La Légende des siècles stand particularly high in critical esteem, and Hugo is sometimes identified as the greatest French poet. Outside France, his best-known works are the novels Les Misérables and Notre-Dame de Paris (known in English also as The Hunchback of Notre Dame). Though a committed conservative royalist when he was young, Hugo grew more liberal as the decades passed; he became a passionate supporter of republicanism, and his work touches upon most of the political and social issues and artistic trends of his time. He is buried in the Panthéon."

Product Description

In the Middle Ages, the heretic, more than any other social or religious deviant, was experienced as an imaginary construct. Everyone believed heretics existed, but no one believed himself or herself to be a heretic, even if condemned as such by representatives of the Catholic Church. Those accused of heresy, meanwhile, maintained that they were the good Christians and their accusers were the false ones.

Exploring the figure of the heretic in Catholic writings of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries as well as the heretic's characterological counterpart in troubadour lyrics, Arthurian romance, and comic tales, Truth and the Heretic seeks to understand why French literature of the period celebrated the very characters who were so persecuted in society at large. Karen Sullivan proposes that such literature allowed medieval culture a means by which to express truths about heretics and the epistemological anxieties they aroused.
The first book-length study of the figure of the heretic in medieval French literature, Truth and the Heretic explores the relation between orthodoxy and deviance, authority and innovation, and will fascinate historians of ideas and literature as well as scholars of religion, critical theory, and philosophy.

This study traces Virgil's journey through modern France by examining his profile in the works of Gide, Aragon, Valry, Pagnol, Klossowski, Butor, Simon and Pinget, and by looking at how their Virgilian appropriations complement and modify current readings of the poet. His manifestation provides insights into modern French culture as well as the Virgilian ouevre. Although Virgil's presence is characterized by its focus on exile and uncertainty, this study reaffirms the multivalency of the Virgilian narrative and its continuing relevance. ... Read more

Naturalist novel, in the original French. First published in 1877. According to Wikipedia: "Emile Zola (2 April 1840 - 29 September 1902) was an influential French writer, the most important example of the literary school of naturalism, and a major figure in the political liberalization of France...After his first major novel, Therese Raquin (1867), Zola started the long series called Les Rougon Macquart, about a family under the Second Empire... More than half of Zola's novels were part of this set of 20 collectively known as Les Rougon-Macquart. Unlike Balzac who in the midst of his literary career re synthetized his work into La Comedie Humaine, Zola from the outset at the age of 28 had thought of the complete layout of the series. Set in France's Second Empire, the series traces the "environmental" influences of violence, alcohol, and prostitution which became more prevalent during the second wave of the industrial revolution." ... Product Description
This monograph analyzes the relationship between literature, thought and community in mid-20th century France. Taking as its point of departure the notion of community in mid-twentieth century French literature and thought, this ambitious study seeks to uncover the ways in which Breton, Bataille, Sartre and Barthes used literature and art to engage with the question of reconceptualizing society. In exploring the relevance these writings hold for contemporary debates about community, Lubecker argues for the continuing social importance of literary studies. Throughout the book, he suggests that literature and art are privileged fields for confronting some of the anti-social desires situated at the periphery of human rationality. The authors studied put to work the concepts of Thanatos, sado-masochism and (self-)sacrifice; they also write more poetically about man's attraction to Silence, the Night and the Neutral. Many sociological discourses on the question of community tend to marginalize the drives inherent within these concepts; Lubecker argues it is essential to take these drives into account when theorising the question of community, otherwise they may return in the atavistic form of myths. Moreover if handled with care and attention they can prove to be a resource. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars vive la decadence!
"the book of masks" is a fascinating, engrossing read from the first page on. gourmont offers poignant commentary on the worth of each individual writer, although more often than not he lets his personal view distort the actual facts of the various writers' lives. the only writer i didn't like in this collection was andre gide, an eye watering bore who shouldn't really be categorized as a 'decadent', i don't think. and the story by moreas about the mother coming onto her son was a bit nasty. but all of these stories have beautiful touches of mystical, otherworldly, occult and sometimes perverse elements to them. a must

5-0 out of 5 stars Disturbing gothic fairy tales.
Erza Pound once wrote, "Gourmont prepared our era." He was oneof the most original writers and thinkers of symbolism in its early days. His characters seem to exist in a bizarre dream-world ; where limits andrules seem arbitrary, ready to change and erupt violently at anytime. Aprecarious dark fantacy of mystical desire, perverse sexuality, genderconfusion, and other 'depraved' issues decadent literature was thenconcerned with. These stories seek to explain and understand the repressed, often depraved, desires each of us have hidden deep down in the blackestregions of our soul. The theme of female sexuality, with its power tomanipulate, over-power, and seduce is also apparent in his many femmefatale characters. Jam-packed with subconsious nightmares, fetishism, deviant behaivor, grotesque, deranged minds, this book is sure toplease(and disturb) any fans of Baudelair, Huysmans, or any otherdecadent/symbolist writers in general.Perhaps even more relevent today... ... Product Description

This book investigates how French Romanticism was shaped by and contributed to colonial discourses of race. It studies the ways in which metropolitan Romantic novels—that is, novels by French authors such as Victor Hugo, George Sand, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, François René de Chateaubriand, Claire de Duras, and Prosper Mérimée—comprehend and construct colonized peoples, fashion French identity in the context of colonialism, and record the encounter between Europeans and non-Europeans. While the primary texts that come under investigation in the book are novels, close attention is paid to Romantic fiction’s interdependence with naturalist treatises, travel writing, abolitionist texts, and ethnographies.

Colonialism, Race, and the French Romantic Imagination is one of the first books to carry out a sustained and comprehensive analysis of the French Romantic novel’s racial imagination that encompasses several sites of colonial contact: the Indian Ocean, North America, the Caribbean, West Africa, and France. Its archival research and interdisciplinary approach shed new light on canonical texts and expose the reader to non-canonical ones. The book will be useful to students and academics involved with Romanticism, colonial historians, students and scholars of transatlantic studies and postcolonial studies, as well as those interested in questions of race and colonialism.

Product Description

This reflection on colonial culture argues for an examination of “Indochina” as a fictive and mythic construct, a phantasmatic legacy of French colonialism in Southeast Asia. Panivong Norindr uses postcolonial theory to demonstrate how French imperialism manifests itself not only through physical domination of geographic entities, but also through the colonization of the imaginary. In this careful reading of architecture, film, and literature, Norindr lays bare the processes of fantasy, desire, and nostalgia constituent of French territorial aggression against Indochina.
Analyzing the first Exposition Coloniale Internationale, held in Paris in 1931, Norindr shows how the exhibition’s display of architecture gave a vision to the colonies that justified France’s cultural prejudices, while stimulating the desire for further expansionism. He critiques the Surrealist counter-exposition mounted to oppose the imperialist aims of the Exposition Coloniale, and the Surrealist incorporation and appropriation of native artifacts in avant-garde works. According to Norindr, all serious attempts at interrogating French colonial involvement in Southeast Asia are threatened by discourse, images, representations, and myths that perpetuate the luminous aura of Indochina as a place of erotic fantasies and exotic adventures. Exploring the resilience of French nostalgia for Indochina in books and movies, the author examines work by Malraux, Duras, and Claudel, and the films Indochine, The Lover, and Dien Bien Phu.
Certain to impact across a range of disciplines, Phantasmatic Indochina will be of interest to those engaged in the study of the culture and history of Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos, as well as specialists in the fields of French modernism, postcolonial studies, cultural studies, and comparative literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great work in post-colonial studies
This book is absolutely brilliant. Of course, anybody can say this without much effort: "Thanks for telling me (that the colonized is exploited and misrepresented) , I know it all along already." But nobody seems to take the time to show how this happened, and in what ways hegemonic power was construed, and what kind of colonial subject was formed. Norindr's vigorous work fills the relatively big void in the post-colonial field: the lack of serious, critical historical scholarship. Too many theories, too little archival work. I recommend Phantasmatic Indochina to anybody interested in Post-colonial studies and Southeast Asian studies. If you love Ann Stoler's Race and the Education of Desire, you'd like to read Phantasmatic Indochina as well.
