Product Description

Collecting the most popular projects and useful scrolling techniques, this all-in-one reference is an essential bookend for all scroll saw libraries. While appropriate for all skill levels, new scrollers will benefit from a comprehensive section devoted to basic skills. This section includes articles pulled directly from the pages of Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts on such essential subjects as choosing blades and wood, cutting, pattern placement, sanding, and safety. Beginners get plenty of advice on these basics before moving forward with novice projects, including simple Christmas motifs, a maple-leaf pattern, and a curious cat. Not to be overlooked, a variety of intermediate and advanced patterns and projects are also included, along with the techniques needed to create them—such as compound cutting for a chess set, fretworking for an intricate Victorian doll bed, intarsia for holiday ornaments, and stack cutting for a classic corner shelf. Seasoned woodworkers will enjoy the chapter committed to using unusual materials such as corian, coins, stained glass, and vellum. Each pattern design is taken from the workshops of today's top designers, including Rick Hutcheson, John Nelson, Gary MacKay, Karen Longabaugh, Sue Mey, Kathy Wise, and Gary Browning.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good...but
Most of the patterns are duplicates of ones published in the magazine. So if you have all the past issues and patterns, you already have these. If you do not there are some very cool patterns here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great instructional book
Being new to scroll sawing, I appreciate the fact that this book has lots of pictures, diagrams and detailed instructions. It explains techniques, tips and tricks from project beginning to finish in easy to follow language. It also includes a lot of great patterns that go from simple to very detailed. If you're new to scroll sawing, I highly recommend this book.I believe skilled scroll saw workers will find useful information in this book as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
For someone starting to get serious about using a scroll saw, this is a fine book. It's well illustrated with close up color photos; it has several different types of projects, most of which I'll never use. I purchased it because I build RC planes and ship models. It replaced am older, smaller saw. Notice the title "woodworking". It's not just about the saw. Excellent book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great!!
This is a great book.I wasn't sure if I should get it, because I couldn't find any reviews anywhere.I decided to go for it, because it was written by the people at scroll saw magazine.I'm glad I did.I've only read the first chapter so far with basic "how to" info.I'm already seeing a huge improvement in my projects.I'm getting smoother cuts and crisper corners, and doing it at a faster pace.I can't wait to do some of the projects they provide. The only improvement I would suggest is making it spiral bound for easier photo-copying of the patterns. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice unique designs
I have a number of scroll saw pattern books and many have similar patterns, where this book is all unique that I haven't seen anywhere else. I would say they are beginner to intermediate in nature. While there are many good patterns, none of them blew me away.

With that said, I was shocked when I saw the current price. I sure don't understand why it's so expensive. I've had it for a couple years so I don't remember where I got it or how much I paid, but I know it's was no where near the current $120+ price.

Unless you have money to burn, I personally wouldn't have paid this price. It's a great book, but not that great. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book for making wooden baskets!
This is an easy to understand book. It has some very nice ideas for making different kinds of wooden baskets. These baskets make nice gifts.Just fill the baskets with something, use your imagination, and you just made a very original special gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I love this book. The patterns are easy to follow, even for a beginner like me. I only wish there would have been more patterns. Everyone was amazed that the baskets were not carved from a solid piece of wood. I would recommend this book for beginners to advanced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Step-by-step instructions from start to finish
Now in an expanded second edition, Making Wooden Baskets On Your Scroll Saw by woodworking experts John A. Nelson and William Guimond reveal just how simple and straightforward it is to create custom wooden baskets on the scroll saw. Showcasing wonderful projects with nicely illustrated, step-by-step instructions from start to finish, even the most novice woodworker can turn out professional quality market baskets, oval baskets, round baskets, square baskets, tissue boxes, candy dishes, jewelry boxes, and more.

3-0 out of 5 stars Low Quality typesetting
I just received this book, and the typesetting and illustrationquality leave a lot to be desired. It appears that the publication master was typeset on a low quality laser printer. Twenty years ago I would have expected as much from a limited audience publication like this, but in this day and age there's really no excuse not to take the time to publish a book with high quality printing. (ever heard of Kinko's?)

I have not yet had a chance to try the patterns, but because of the low resolution, I am concerned that when I try to photocopy them for sawing, the quality of the working patterns may not be very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars very very ingenious,

4-0 out of 5 stars scroll saw portraits by browning
I think this book could be outstnding but is very vague on the do it your self portion and programs that can accomplish the desired pictres! I think the author wrote tis book to sell his scroll saw patterns, and not to provide the information the title suggests.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not much Help.
If you want to turn your photographs into patterns you might look else where. There are no instructions telling you how to use software. You are told to get a software product that will let you work with pictures. In one photo you are shown a dog with one ear being dark. You are told to copy the ear from the other side onto the dark ear. You are not told how to do it---just do it.
Ther are many patterns already made. If you are looking for premade patterns then you may enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new scroll saw concept
I gave this product as a gift to a relative who is very good with scroll saw tecniques. He was unaware of this book.It gave him a new perspective particularly in creating his own designs.Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Great Instruction
Everything you ever wanted to know about scroll saws.Originally checked a copy out of the library and after looking it over decided I had to have a copy.Every scroller should have one!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book.... slow delivery
The book, "The New Scroll Saw Handbook" is great. The delivery for it was very slow and, in my opinion unacceptable.Any money that may have been saved in buying this through this service and this seller was wasted in the fact that it just took way too long for delivery.I ordered the book for my brother in law's birthday about two weeks in advance of the date.He didn't get the book until nearly a week after his birthday!Way too long and very unfortunate for all parties involved.

5-0 out of 5 stars If ita not in this book, you don't need it
Great little book, covers a little more than i needed about the history of scrollsaws and various types/ brands, but and its a big but, this book does not skimp on technique and is packed other useful information, blades, speedds, how to cut a million different things. Probably the only scrollsaw book you'll ever need and that's something.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good reference book
This is a good-sized volume, and a nice reference book for this particular tool. It is exhaustive in its exploration of all of the different types of projects that the scroll saw can be used for. It also talks about routine maintenance and blade changes, how to tell if your machine is running properly, the pros and cons of different blade types and sizes, and what kinds of wood are appropriate for the scroll saw and won't waste all of the time and effort being put into the project at hand. All very useful information.

There is also a ton of information on the history of the scroll saw, which I found to be marginally interesting. The only thing that kept me from giving this book 5 stars is the huge section that is meant to help you choose which scroll saw is right for you. The saws are outdated. This is a 2002 edition of a book originally published in the 80's. I assumed that the models would be current, but they really aren't. Unless you are trying to buy a used saw that has been around for a while, the information in that section isn't particularly helpful.

Having said that, I still really like this book, and it is well worth the $7 or so I spent for it. I am inspired to try out a few different kinds of projects now. Of course the projects I am inspired to try are quite complex, requiring hundreds of precision cuts that are beyond my current skill level, so I am practicing up before wasting any expensive wood.

5-0 out of 5 stars So much complete info in this book, and then more...
I thought I knew a little about the scroll saw and this book showed me how little really I knew.I know what projects that I want to build and this book has the answers on techniques that I need to accomplish them all.
Referencing the scroll saw machine features from the book, I bought the Hitachi 16" Variable Speed Scroll Saw Model: CW40from Lowes [great value: $150, including table legs, vacuum port, 45` table tilt left & right, flexible blower hose, accepts plain or pin end blades, attached work light, and with a $25 rebate/gift card]Now I feel almost totally prepared to begin trying my hand at a new skill.

There is a lot of info in there, almost too much in some chapters like machine history, but it is very much worth the USED LIKE NEW book price. ... Read more
