5-0 out of 5 stars Loved by my 2 year old...
This is one of my daughter's favorite books- she loves the Disney Princesses, and this is a cute addition to the Princess and the Frog story. In fact, she started liking this book before she even saw the movie-(we took it out of the library first).Being that she's only 2, I have to explain some of the concepts to her, but I like the message it is sending. Also, the illustrations are beautiful. My daughter does not like some of the Pixar books (like Ratatouille) because the illustrations do not look like the characters (to a 2 year old), but she always want to look at this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!!
I got this book for my daughter for her second birthday because she LOVES Princess Tiana. We literally read this book 10 times a day, but I can't decide if that is a good thing... It was also fun for me (the first time) to see how Princess Tiana's life was after she married and got her restaurant. Buy this book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning!
The illustration in this book is remarkable. I like how the story picks up from where the movie left OFF......that is nice. It gives you a peek into her life after her restaurant is up and running. I only wish the story had gone on and on!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun little book for children
My son saw this book in a waiting room and Loved it.The little eyes roll around and follow you from page to page through the story. He enjoyed the story so much that I decided to buy it for him so he could read it again and again at home.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 3year old grandson's favorite book
He loves to sing, and this book is very sing-songy.The repetitiveness and inter-related scenarios teach story continuity to would be readers; and is great for new readers, like my 7 year old grandson to read to his 3 year old brother. It can be read different ways, in different orders, and with different voices for each scenario; very versatile.I found it in a gift shop of a Key West bar, and have not seen any since; so I will be ordering several others off this website.

2-0 out of 5 stars repetitive and boring
While it is, of course, fine for children's books to be silly and even repetitive, there are lots of other titles which do with much less monotony. It is very difficult to read this with any sense of fun, flow or rhythm. Hopefully, this won't be a title your child asks you to read over and over. While this book may be fun for a lot ofchildren (my daughter not so much), it is not very fun for the parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun!
I read this to my 18 month old granddaughter and she never stopped laughing. It was a great fun read for both of us. Repetition is what young children love, and this book has repetition in abundance. The googly eyes add the perfect silly touch that appeals to children.

1-0 out of 5 stars A huge disappointment
I bought this book for my science-oriented 4yr old grandson who is fascinated by "black holes" in space. This book is a huge disappointment as the illustrations are unattrative, the story is silly and it teaches nothing. The back cover states it is a "space spoof."I wish I had known that before I bought it.Nowhere in any reviews was that made clear.Additionally, my copy had 8 pages missing text.It certainly is not for a 4 year old, nor was there anything in it for his grandmother.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brave and bright, bright and brave, Commander Toad
I totally loved these books when I was a kid! I really wish I still had this one. :D It has that eerie quality that most kids just love.. not scary at all, just strange, it will stick with a kid. It's that indefinable magic that shows up so much stronger when you're young, and maybe reading books like this will keep it alive later on. :D The characters are great too, this is how all kid's books should be!

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST intergalactic toad book I have ever read.
This book really fills a big black hole in modern literature. The subject of toads in space has been constantly avoided, mishandled, and disregarded since the publication of Ivan Rabinavski's "Why Toads could never make it on the moon." Jane Yolen places the space-toad in its proper perspective in a beautiful and meaningful manner, pulling no punches and using no foul language. I loved it ... Read more

This is a wonderful book with great colorful illustrations. When a stranger sets up camp at the end of town, Duck and Pig automatically assume that because he's a rat, the stranger must be sneaky and lazy and a badperson.Only Frog takes the time to actually get to know Rat and form hisown opinion.Frog not only discovers what a friendly, interesting, andhelpful Rat he is, but gains a new friend. The story is just long enoughfor reading at bedtime, keeps your attention without being too preachy, yetteaches morals on many different levels.I think this is a wonderful bookfor teaching tolerance for people different from you, as well as how not tobe rude like Pig.I definitely recommend it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The first book I ever read!
...And I still have most of it memorized! It's a great first read, with just enough words so the kids feel good about reading it, but not so many that they get frustrated and overwhelmed."This is a frog. He likes to jog. Jog frog, jog..."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for First Graders
As a first grade teacher, I have used this book and others in this series to help emerging readers become beginning readers.Because of the phonemicapproach, the interesting plot and illustrations from which to get pictureclues, the students are able to read this book readily. You should seetheir faces when they are able to read it.It causes them to want to readmore. It's also not a "baby book".The children feel that thisis a more grown-up book. Thanks from a grateful teacher and her students.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great first reading book!
Most "first readers" are much too advanced for true beginners. But its short sentences, repeating words, and a relatively engaging story make this one just perfect for the child who's ready to read their first book. My daughter was thrilled that she could read it all by herself. :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, great for beginning readers
My son is learning to read, and this book fulfilled his criteria: the font is large, the ratio of words per page is small enough, and the pictures are large and colorful. Most of the words could be read phonetically, but notall - it was just the right combination of accessible and challenging.Allthat and an amusing story with great illustrations. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic illustrations
This book is brilliantly illustrated throughout. While the story itself may not be great, it's short enough so you can still enjoy turning through the pages and looking at the illustrations. And if you're reading to your kids, you know it helps if the pictures can hold their attention. My 6 year old son and 4 year old daughter both enjoy reading this book together.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great illustrations, story is just ok
I bought this book for my two daughters, age 3 and 5.The drawings are superb, very elegantly and imaginatively rendered. We were slightly disappointed by the story. It starts out well enough, the frog's desire to leave her little world behind had us all turning the pages, but the conclusion is not at all satisfying. Without getting too specific, the ending relies on a "magic moment" that falls flat. And it became hard for my girls to identify with the frog and her journey, when it all dissolved into a kind of magical non-realism.I think it would have been much stronger if the author had stuck to a more naturalistic ending, and imparted some real-life lesson or wisdom at the end of the journey. After a few readings, the girls have rarely asked me to get the book off the shelf. As much as we all love the pictures, the story failed to capture any of our imaginations.

5-0 out of 5 stars The striking illustrations vividly contrast light, shadow, and perspective in this wondrous tale of discovery.
"The New Yorker" illustrator Guy Billout presents his latest children's picturebook, The Frog who Wanted to See the Sea, about a timid little frog named Alice with a grand dream, who dares to venture from her comfortable, humdrum pond in her quest to see the sea for herself. Her journey will lead her to bigger and bigger bodies of water, and introduce her to unusual friends - including the mysterious reflection of the moon. The striking illustrations vividly contrast light, shadow, and perspective in this wondrous tale of discovery. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Frog
My 15 month old really enjoys the "That's Not My..." series. They give her added tactile interest without lift-the-flap disasters, which simply result in a ruined book. This book in particular is of the same quality as the rest of the series, and each frog is identifiable as a frog with its individual peculiarities. I think it helps her to learn that things can be similar without being exactly the same. The funny thing is, my daughter gets more excited about the companion mouse, and where it is on the page, than the featured animal sometimes! My only gripe is that in the world of board books, which are expensive to begin with, this series has some of the priciest.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Early Chapter Book
Warton the toad, undeterred by the dangerous winter weather, determines to visit his Aunt Toolia to bring her some of his brother Morton's delicious beetle brittle. He fashions skis and sallies forth, only to be captured by a dour owl who determines to eat him as a special treat on his upcoming birthday. As the days count down, Warton's kindness toward his captor causes the owl to question whether he really wants to eat the animal who has become his only friend. The story culminates in a dramatic rescue -- but not the one the reader anticipates.

Warton the Toad is courteous and helpful to others, and he keeps his environment orderly. He brings a friendly conviviality to the lonely owl's table by lighting candles and serving tea, even in the face of his impending death. His courage, ingenuity and generosity commend him as a hero that young listeners will want to identify with.

This delightful story situates itself somewhere between The Frog and Toad Collection Box Set (I Can Read Book 2) and The Wind in the Willows in reading level. It has a wider vocabulary than most picture books or easy readers, and makes an excellent read-aloud for young listeners just transitioning into chapter books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Read Aloud ever written for young elementary students
If you are looking for an excellent read aloud book for first or second grade students, this is it. An excellent story with just enough drama to capture students' interest and hold it for a long time. My first graders beg to hear more of this story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for many ages
This book may not be the best choice for very young children, as it is rather long (it takes about 25 minutes to read aloud), and they might lose interest. I loved this book as a child, and was not disappointed to re-read it as an adult. This tale of mutual understanding and shared compassion and friendship is very satisfying. While bits of it may be a bit tense for some children, the ending is thoroughly uplifting. I highly recommend this book for children who like stories about animals, as well as for anyone who just wants to read a pleasant, well-illustrated story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read aloud

A Frog Thing is about a young frog named Frankie. His loving parents raise him to believe that he can do "anything he sets his mind to".So, Frank decides he wats to fly. After many failed attempts, Frank becomes discouraged. But he still holds on to his dream of flying. This story has
a creative ending.A Frog Thing also comes with an audio CD which retells the story with sound effects. The illustrations are subtle and complement the book well.
This story will appeal to the 5-8 year olds out there who have dreams that may seem out of reach.Teachers will enjoy reading this book aloud to their students. The Adventures of Roxy and Mozart

5-0 out of 5 stars Child's book
This is not only a good book, but it comes along with a CD that reads the story, and incorporates some descent music into the CD that fits nicely into the story being told.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Big Lesson for Small People
I've never seen a children's book so beautifully capture the balance between shooting for your dreams, while at the same time understanding your gifts and even limitations.

"You can do anything you set your mind too" is something we often tell children in efforts not to crush their young dreams. And who knows, we might have the next Michael Jordan sitting right in front of us.

Despite all our good intentions though, the statement is untrue. What we actually mean is, "Don't let the fact that something is hard or seems unattainable stop you from giving it your all." Frank learns the lesson in a way that is accessible to every child. He does achieve his dream in a sense but realizes that he wasn't created to fly...but he sure can swim. A big lesson for small people.

All philosophy aside, my children love the book and are obsessed with the CD that comes with it. It often plays for hours at a time as they follow along or use it as a background for doing other things.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
Frankie is a frog that wants to fly.His parents tell him that he can't fly because that's a bird thing... not a frog thing. But that doesn't stop Frankie. He is determined to fly and he does! This is a beautiful story that will help your children understand that with determination you can do anything you set your mind to!
I bought A Frog Thing for my children for Christmas so I haven't listened to the CD. I know they will really enjoy the story. They love frogs and the illustrations are beautiful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Humorous and mocking, but still maintains a true fairy tale heart
This is totally up my fairy tale alley! I love the idea of the continuation of the fairy tale and I love just how real and likeable the poor Frog Prince came. This book has many fairy tale references mixed with pop culture that are just hilarious, and yet there is plenty of heart and a very sweet message.

5-0 out of 5 stars A reality check for a fairy tale life
"The Princess kissed the frog.He turned into a prince. And they lived happily ever after..."

(riiiiiiiight.....whoever conceived such drivel?)
Okay, back to the book.....

"Well, let's just say they lived sort of happily for a long time.Okay, so they weren't so happy. In fact, they were miserable."

Welcome back to reality, oh beloved fairy tale. This one starts out with the nagging and whining prevalent in most relationships today.(Okay, this book is really not that depressing, but rather, very, very, FUNNY).Like most disgruntled spouses, the prince goes running off in search of the greener grass on the other side of the fence. No, he's not looking for an affair, just a witch (although both are hazardous to your health).Older kids will recognize witches from other fairy tales - e.g. one with the words "The Fairest" inscribed on her front door, sitting in front of her makeup mirror (with a No Whistling sign attached) reading a copy of "Hague" - Hilarious! Finally he finds a certain godmother who will help him, only not in the way he had thought. Not to to spill the beans, but our prince does finally get his fairy tale ending...only with a cute little twist I didn't see coming. The illustrations are to die for; I just don't want to do it by poison apple.

4-0 out of 5 stars A reverse story with a happily ever after ending.
Jon Scieszka, author, has a way of twisting a fairy tale around and truly making it his own.The frog prince is tired of being nagged by his princess about hopping around on furniture and having lily pads in his pocket, he just wants to be a frog again and live happily ever after. The frog prince sets off on an adventure and goes from witch to witch (witches from other fairy tales) begging for them to turn him into a frog again. He comes upon a witch who finally tries but fails, turning him into a frog carriage. At the stroke of midnight the frog prince changes back to a prince and runs home to kiss his beautiful priness who he loves so much (only because he thought he was going to live out the rest of his life as a carriage in the scary woods). He kisses her and....well, I don't want to give away the creative ending. The illustrations are a bit dark but creative and effective to the sadness in the beginning of the story and woods through-out the rest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Frog Prince Continued-06
And they all lived happily ever after........or not. The frog prince continued happens after the marriage of the frog prince and the beautiful princess. However life in the kingdom is not so magical. They fight they bicker, he whines she nags and now the frog prince wants nothing more than to become a frog again. So he sets off through the forest to find the witch who can turn him back into a frog. He meets many interesting witches along the way and finally one who can make him a frog, but is that really what he wants? Or does he wish he was with the princess again?

This hilarious story is complimented by even more hilarious pictures. The combination of author and illustrator make this picture book one you should not miss. Your kids will love the story and you will love that they love it. So go get a copy of the frog prince continued today. Recommended to kids six and up.

Everyone knows the story of the frog prince, right?Princess kisses the frog, frog turns into prince, remember? The story continues in this fun picture book for kids. The frog prince is living with the beautiful princess, but they are far from living happily ever after. The princess and the prince are just too different. The prince wants to go down to the pond. The princess wants him to go out and slay a dragon. Complete opposites. So, one night, the prince decides to leave and find a witch that will turn him back into a frog.

The prince's journeys take him deep into the woods. After walking for a little while, he meets witch number one.He begs to be turned back into a frog. But the witch has other ideas. She said that since he is a prince, she must cast a nasty spell on him. After all, she doesn't want Sleeping Beauty to wake before her hundred years are up. But, before the witch can get a hold of him, the frog prince runs away, even deeper into the forest.

After having run for a little while longer, he spots a cottage. As you have probably guessed, witch number two is there. He begs the witch to turn him back into a frog. But the witch has other ideas. If he is a prince, he must eat a poison apple. After all, she doesn't want anyone rescuing Snow White. But before the witch can get a hold of him, he's off, running as fast as he can, ever deeper into the forest.

Running along the path, he comes to another cottage. And of course, outside, there is witch number three, outside gardening.Again, the prince begs to become a frog again. But the witch has other ideas. After all, she doesn't want to skip lunch (which consists of two little children). But before the witch can get a hold of him, the prince dashes off down the path, but this time, he was lost.

While walking down the forest path, he spies witch number four, who was changing pumpkins to carriages. The prince begs to become a frog, and for once, the witch gives it a try. With a wave of her wand the prince is transformed...into a carriage! The"carriage prince" runs... I mean rolls, even farther down the path.Just when he is beginning to despair of ever changing back into a human (he had long since given up on ever becoming a frog again), the clock strikes midnight, and to his great delight, he changed back into his human form.

Not wasting any time, the prince ran back to his castle, where the poor princess had been worrying herself sick. The prince looked at the princess, the only one who had believed him, the one who had actually kissed his slimy frog lips, the princess who loved him.
"The Prince kissed the Princess.
They both turned into frogs.
And they hopped off happily ever after."

THE END

5-0 out of 5 stars Why are those frogs climbing up our windows?
Michigan is not a state that is well-known for its amphibians, but we do have an abundance of frogs, and a lesser number of toads and salamanders.

"Michigan Frogs, Toads, and Salamanders" is a well-organized, well-written, and well-illustrated color guide for Michiganders who are interested in their natural surroundings.I picked up a copy when my husband and I became curious about the little gray frogs that clung to our windows during the summer nights, and ate the bugs that were attracted to our lights.

Then my husband found a couple of these frogs in the leaf litter that he was cleaning out of our gutters this fall, and we wondered where they normally spent the winter.

This book answers the question of where gray treefrogs hibernate during our Michigan winters--leaf litter or rotted wood--and also how they are able to survive subfreezing temperatures:they produce a natural antifreeze in their bodies.

Ranges, descriptions, and habitats are given for each of the 23 amphibians in this book, and if you happen to see one outside of its listed range, the authors ask that you take photographs of the specimen and report your finding to them.

There is also general information on amphibian anatomy, fossil history, behavior, conservation, and captive care (although the authors recommend that you study these fascinating little creatures in their native habitat).

P.S.I also learned that the 'quacking' I hear in the woods during the spring comes from wood frogs, not wood ducks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Dr. Harding
Dr. Harding has done Michigan quite a service with this book. Most of the best pictures you see published of native Michigan herps are probably taking by him.

Invaluable as a reference and educational tool, and sad, as frogs, toads, and salamanders are disappearing at an alarming rate. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Toad by Ruth Brown
Excellent book that my toddler daughter loves. She insists we read it to her several times in a row, making her rounds between her Dad, me and her older brothers and sisters. It is especially delightful to her because she spent all summer catching and playing with toads.

The art, the language and the story itself are all captivating. It is a shame that the book is out of print. It is a treasure. One of our all time favorite children's books. Thank you Ms. Brown.

4-0 out of 5 stars Toad
Book received promptly and was in very good condition. I wish I had known whether or not the seller had more than one copy available, as I needed several copies for gifts for teachers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good read-aloud
This book was unappealing to me at first glance, but the children in storytime loved it. The pictures are large and attractive, the cadences are natural and easy to read aloud and the subject is a winner for preschoolers. I like the use of rare vocabulary words used in a way that is self explanatory. Wish it would come back in print- I'd order several.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wash Your Hands After Reading
"Toad" by Ruth Brown describes the real life of an ordinary toad. Murky, brownish, darkish green pictures fill the book in dramatic two-page spreads, capturing the action of each page.

This is not a great book; it is a fun book. Reading it is like playing in a puddle, or squishing wet clay into a new shape.

Toads, when it comes down to the nitty-gritty, are creatures that dwell in mud, eat vile things, and neither taste nor smell pleasant. Brown tells us about the toad as it really is.

The vocabulary, with words like septic, toxic, bitter, venomous, and my favorite, trundle, will sometimes be beyond most children. They will learn new words as they return to the book again and again.

I enjoyed it the way I enjoy Oscar the Grouch. Have fun with this one.
