Just look online for ideas and use common sense. This book offers no new information what so ever so pass.

Frugal Living means Smart Living
Frugal Living for Dummies is NOT a good title. No one in today's economy is a 'Dummy' for trying to live frugal! This book gives hundreds of great, easy to follow tips for living better on less in the "for Dummies" format. A very good read...especially in tough financial times.

Not the best frugal living book out there
This book would be great for "beginning" to live and think frugally. If you've got a home, and kids then this would be a good book to just look at if you are thinking about becoming more frugal.

I guess I would refer this book to people who definitely have a budget to live off of - and maybe those who really aren't hurting that bad money wise.

And, you don't have to be a dummie to read this book.

The introduction was probably the best part of the whole book.

I really enjoyed it. Had fabulous Ideas. The only Con is it deals with some things that only apply to places where there are season changes. I live in SoCal so that wasn't very helpful because we don't have that, but otherwise it was pretty good.

Good even for those NOT just starting out
I am not just out of college and have been supporting myself quite effectively for a while now. But I still found this book helpful and informative for its advice on doing things frugally. I especially loved the chapter on entertaining. I have always been shy about hosting events because I was always afraid I couldn't pull it off. It's not just the expense; the entire thing seems overwhelming. But, the book makes it easy. It not only gives advice and direction on how throw a party one can actually afford and therefore enjoy but also gives instructions on everything from how much liquor to buy to what kind of music to play to determing the guest list. I just might entertain a little more often.

unuseful for this day and age...
I love frugal and economical but this book made no sense to me. Reminds me of the foxwoods books but not nearly as useful.My first Kindle book that I had to delete without even reading half.

Review of the free KINDLE version of "The American Frugal Housewife"

may be; and whatever be the size of a family every member should be employed either in
earning or saving money."

This is for the most part, the only proper "Introduction" that the reader encounters when starting "The American Frugal Housewife, for Ms. Lydia Maria Francis Child plunges right in and begins dishing out advice left and right, providing a veritable flood of information.She advises, for example, that children not be allowed to frolic about until 13 or 14 years of age.

"This is not well. It is not well for the purses and patience of parents; and it has a
still worse effect on the morals and habits of the children. Begin early is the great
maxim for everything in education. A child of six years old can be made useful and
should be taught to consider every day lost in which some little thing has not been done
to assist others."

Other advice consists of how economize and how keep what you have in good repair. Everything from stockings to hearths, from apples to sausages.In addition, there is medical advice, and instructions on how to cook a variety of foods.Everything from porridges to cows brains, herbed wines to pies.

STEWED PRUNES.

Stew them very gently in a small quantity of water till stones slip out. Physicians
consider them safe nourishment in fevers.

BEANS AND PEAS.

Baked beans are a very simple dish, yet few cook them well. They should be put in cold
water, and hung over the fire, the night before they are baked. In the morning, they
should be put in a colander, and rinsed two or three times; then again placed in a
kettle, with the pork you intend to bake, covered with water, and kept scalding hot, in
hour or more. A pound of pork is quite enough for a quart of beans, and that is a large
dinner for a common family. The rind of the pork should be slashed. Pieces of pork alter-
nately fat and lean, are the most suitable ; the cheeks are the best. A little pepper
sprinkled among the beans, when they are placed in the bean-pot, will render them less
unhealthy. They should be just covered with water, when put into the oven ; and the pork
should be sunk a little below the surface of the beans. Bake three or four hours.

THE SKINNY:::
To be perfectly honest, there is some sound advice here.Some of it inspired by Ben Franklin, and some of it coming from friends and articles read by the author.

I found this an absolutely fascinating book that gives some wonderful insight into the daily life of early American families. We get to see what the concerns of housewives were, and how life was lived amongst a class of people -- the less well-off -- that is frequently overlooked by historical studies.

Ms. Child was born in 1802.She was raised by a strict Calvinist father and later she married a lawyer who proved to be an improvident dreamer who at times was imprisoned for his debts. As a consequence she knows frugality quite well.

The American Frugal Housewife is extremely well written, and was extremely well received at the time it was first put up for sale.In fact, it was republished 27 times between 1835 and 1841.

I HIGHLY recommend this work to students of history and those who are interested in early American life.

As for the "Kindle" format, I must say that this particular version comes with 'highlights', some of which are definitions. These are easy to access or ignore. (Which is why I can't tell you what they all are.) Being a FREE book it's hard to complain, but I should note that there are images from the original book that don't appear in the Kindle copy. They pertain to the parts of animals -- rumps, chops, etc.-- and aren't particularly valuable.But if you are curious you can find them at GoogleBooks and Archive-dot-org, both of whom have their own free copies.

Great book, hard to put down. Like reading a time capsule. BUT, I was constantly highlighting and underlining, because I was unfamiliar with many of the "ingredients" she has listed.

An Excellent Read
This little book is filled with such wonderful information... back when wives & mothers HAD to do so much on their own, when they didn't have the internet to "run & look something up" they had a wealth of information they passed along to each other & to their daughters.This is for all you women who, like me, never had "all that stuff" passed down to you. Just AMAZINGLY chocked full of info!

OK but predictable
I was intrigued by the cover/title of this book.The author Majorie Harris has "rehashed" a number of green tips, that have been written about, again and again. this is nothing new. If you are looking for a great way to "go green" there are better books to read that are more entertaining as well. Try David Bach's Go Green Live Rich for one of them. Not worth the money.

Simple ideas
I read this book in one day. It had some simple ideas and topics, but nothing in depth. I enjoyed the read, however I'm glad it was a library book not something I purchased. I don't think I'd ever re-read it since it was pretty basic.

Pracitcable book
A very handy and practicable book full of useful information on a wide variety of ways to save time, money, be more self sufficient, live healthier and empower people to manage household, family, leisure and a host of other daily issues. Covers most of those areas where we tend too often waste rather than save. The thriftiest idea about this book is to buy and use it. This is a solid, little book full of useful ideas and different ways to save money. This book is short but that doesn't mean it lacks substance. To me this book was perfect for the quick ideas that can get me moving in the right direction. Just got finished reading this book and I really enjoyed it.

You're not going to find hundreds of pages of boring material. The author has really summed up 92 great ways to make your money go as far as it can and he doesn't present you with a bunch of filler material. It's quick and to the point. However, I wouldn't necessarily say that this book is about saving money... it's more about how to get MORE for your money, which is fine with me! I always enjoy a good bargain.

Some people call this being cheap, but I call it being thrifty!

If you're looking for numerous ways to stretch your dollar, then this is a great book to read through. Especially during a recession!

Very practical book
I found this book to be full of practical little tips and tricks for saving money.Some of them are a bit obvious (i.e. using coupons at the grocery store), but a lot of the ideas had never occurred to me before, so this book was definitely worth the read for me personally (literally: I've already saved money with some of these ideas).

The only gripe I have with this book is a fairly small one:I felt like the beginning part of the book was a little "fluffy" (basically, it just talked about how bad the economy is right now, something we're all pretty much aware of already).However, most introductions to books are kind of fluffy like this, and once I got to the meat of the book, I didn't find the book fluffy at all, I thought that all of the ideas laid out in the book were very helpful and practical.

I thought this book was a really good investment, and I'm sure that anyone buying this could easily make back the cost of the book by following the tips inside.All in all, I'd be happy to recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about living frugal and saving more money. ... Inspiring and thought-provoking
Living Naked and Frugal was more influential than any other in my thought process which led me to take an early retirement from full-time work and move to a nudist resort.None of us live forever, and we all have choices about how to spend our limited time on this planet.This realization need not be a morbid one; in fact it can lead us to great joy while we are well enough to enjoy it.Whether or not the reader ultimately makes choices like Paul's, LN&F is certainly inspiring and thought-provoking, which is exactly what a good book should be.

A Curmudgeon's view of Living Naked
About the book:

He's a curmudgeon and declares himself one in the introduction, even if he doesn't use that term.The writing style is crusty, earthy and very easy to read, even though he has more then a few axes to grind.

With the caution of telling them it is a overview and one man's opinion, I would give this book to someone new to the nudist lifestyle. He does not go into details with many of his comentaries, so I don't really consider it a guidebook or manual.In many ways it really the story of his moving from a city highrise apartment to a trailer in a quiet resort.

4 out 5 stars for the lack of detail.

About the writing:

It would be possible to critically rake this book over the coals for much of its style and flow, but as it was written in the brief time Mr. Penhallow had left in his life, many of its sins can be forgiven.However, I do wish that Ms. Lovell had exercised her editorial/rewrite control as there are several dangling references and repeated comentaries that needed to be completed or removed.

Also don't let the title fool you, anyone who has trailers at 2 different resorts, a 5-ton truck to move the "essentials" between the 2 and 4 microwaves, cannot be called parsimonious and barely be called frugal. ;)

best book
This book in my opinion is the best book on introducing people to nudism.The author used a straight forward approach to all aspects of clothing optional recreation.The author, who is on the cover, passed away as thebook went to press but contributor Marilyn Lovell works and plays a bigrole at the clothing optional resort Avalon in Paw Paw, West Virginia.

Awesome
This book is great. Since I have gotten it I threw away all of my drawers and trousers. I am nude all of the time. I really like to sit on my head like the guy on the cover. I do it alot. And then it hurts. I have to icemy head down after. When I do it, somethimes people walk by and go"wooooah". It is pretty awesome. Then they sometimes say thingslike "we should do that". When I am standing on my head I alsolike to pretend that I am a space-man with upside-down eyes.
