Product Description
Since many older Americans exist on little more than Social Security, tips are needed on living well on a tight budget. This book chronicles what the author learned during a year of living on a $1,000-a-month budget. In these financially tough times, the insights offered are of value to younger households as well as seniors. This book is an easy, thought-provoking read. Not only does it contain timely information on frugal living, it is written in a conversational, humorous style, with short chapters that cater to today's hectic lifestyle. To better prepare for his approaching retirement on a shoestring budget, Frank Nellis read two bestsellers on the subjects of frugality and retirement. The first was The Complete Tightwad Gazette by Amy Dacyczyn. Her book contained useful material, but with her endorsing dumpster diving for canned foods and like suggestions, Nellis felt the standard of living she described was below the level many retirees aspire to. The second bestseller Nellis perused was Retire on Less Than You Think: The New York Times Guide to Planning Your Financial Future by Fred Brock. That book suggested working in a high-income metropolitan area and buying an expensive home in the suburbs. A prospective retiree could later sell the nice home, use the equity and any appreciation to downsize to a modest home in a low-cost-of-living area, and use the price difference between the two homes to fund retirement. For Nellis, this did not seem a viable option for less well-off individuals who lack big homes and who retire on meager incomes. The author felt the literature on frugal retirement contained a large niche between these two authors' works. He was convinced many retirees live well on limited incomes. He described this "middle ground" of simple living by chronicling the experiences of his first year of retirement. That chronicle, which morphed into this book, proves a useful vehicle to convey the nuts-and-bolts of thrifty living. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tight Living for Tough Times
If you can't save 100 times the price of this book; you have not read it thoroughly. I loved the useful illustrations the author uses to save money. It is so practical. I plan on retiring within the year and I am thankful that I read this book. I am sure I will read it over and over again. I highly recommend it for anyone who is thinking of living on $1,000 to $1,500 a month fixed income. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta Love Gus the Dog, He is so Wise
I've had this book for years and I go to it about once a month or so for an idea. I particularly like the comments by Gus the Dog. He is so right when he says that "People become confused when they are all cooking together and having a good time." Gus thinks it's better to stand by the door and watch, because they will feed you sooner or later. That's good advice for all you arm chair chefs.

This book is crammed full of delicious recipes from around the world and down the street. The neighborhood, Europe, Asia and more, all between the pages of one cookbook, can't ask for more than that. But you get more here, because you get Jeff Smiths delicious sense of humor and his doggone good writing. This is so much more than a cookbook, it's good old fashioned entertainment as well. It's a must for any chef.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch Recipes
Jeff Smith was excellent in taking home style food and developing more flavor into them and keeping the recipes simple to prepare. This book completes my collection of his cookbooks. It was unfortunate he was halted in his career by unproven accusations.

5-0 out of 5 stars "THE FRUGS" BRINGS THE FAMILY BACK TO THE TABLE!
My title blurb say it all. This book is filled with great recipes, history and family tradition! Jeff Smith spoke about interesting traditions and origins on his entertaining PBS show. Before 'The Food Network' we had the witty and talented 'Frugal Gourmet'. This book deals with some simplistic, yet very good classic family dishes. Nothing fancy, just great traditional family food! Something the world seems to be missing these days is time spent in the kitchen with the family preparing meals for "get togethers". Make time for this book, your family and friends! Even if your not a "religious" person these are words to live by.

This is yet another excellent cook book by Jeff Smith! It's full of great recipes and stories by a very talented cook and writer. This one focuses on family cooking. I have used many of these recipes and found them to be very good. Being a home grown cook myself and having had many of my grandmother's classic recipes handed down to me, I found this book to be very helpful in expanding my culinary taste buds.

Jeff Smith entertained us for years on his PBS program 'The Frugal Gourmet'. Not only did he teach us many savory dishes, he also educated us. Not satisfied with just cooking delicious meals for his viewers, he would give detailed history lessons about the origins of the dish and made it all a lot of fun!

This may be Mr. Smiths best cook book and it is a worthy edition to everyone's cook book library. I own and have read many, if not all of his cook books, not only for the man's knowledge of cooking, but his incredible wit! This guy was funny and I would have loved to have hung out and throw a few beers down with him.

Unfortunately, this man had some very seriously bad press released about his personal life and well..... I am not one to spread rumors.....he seemed like a great guy and sadly he died before he was able to clear his name.

R.I.P. Frugs!

4-0 out of 5 stars I liked the recipes but
my girlfriend did not like the fact there was no visuals any of the recipes. I go by names and ingredients, she goes by pictures. ::shrug:: The recipes are great either way

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
I've been cooking from this book for over 10 years now, and I'm still sometimes surprised by the recipes I haven't tried yet.Just today I gave the Potato Gnocchi Liddia recipe to a friend. Not every recipe is a favorite in our household, but the Frug had never led us far astray. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Big Disappointment
Party Central
Month to month guide to entertaining on the cheap.

You can't tell a book by its title. I was expecting more than this book offers. It is filled with booze party ideas for what appears to be collage age and beyond.

They make a valiant effort to show a plan for a party for each month and usually show the register tape to show how cheaply the party was to put on.

They claim to exist to help you find the perfect party theme for any occasion, and give strategies for stocking a bar without going broke.

Their themes were: January: `Round Midnight, February: the Lonely Hearts Club Brunch, March: One Starry Night,April: Pot Luck, Por Favor, May: Horsing Around, June:Miami Heat, July, Red, White and New, August: High Camp, September: A Touch of Class, October: Having a Scream, November: A Movable Feast, December: Come On In, Y'all.

Throughout the book there is many photographs- page 34 has a girl on the floor by the toilet, and there is a column on Hangover Helpers. Page 35 has a littered floor with candy and Bayer, Alka-Seltzer and Jack Daniels and Bacardi. Page 172 shows six bottles of wine to help you with choosing the right wine.

A small redeeming feature of this book is that there are a few good recipes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Silly book
This is an adolescent, immature "party" book. It's like a bunch of frat kids gathered and put it together. The more outrageous absurd they created is a 4th of July cup cake with a "peace" simple as decoration. How do these idiots think independence was achieved? That's what happens when we no longer teach kids the US Constitution!Zero stars for bad taste.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cool
Cool party ideas, for young people living on the cheap. A lot of retro themes. This book is a feast for the eyes, because the photograhy is really well-done.

The menus were biased towards carbs, which I guess is to be expected.

I'm not sure if I would have the flair and panache to pull off some of these party ideas...

September features a "Back-to-School" wedding theme in a rented cafeteria. The 100 guests line up to get cheese pizza and tater tots on a tray. Instead of a guest book, a 3-ring binder. Instead of flowers, blown-up balloons. Instead of a wedding cake, they rented a cotton candy machine for $60. Instead of champagne, juice boxes.

...I wonder what the guests wish they had brought instead of presents! But the point is, is that when you look like an Abercrombie model: anything goes.

My favorite month was November, which featured a Thanksgiving that reminded me of the ones we used to have in the Peace Corps. It was a group effort: the guys grilled small hens and made kettle chips, while the girls whipped up lighter and less-fussy variations on old thanksgiving favorites. The "pumpkin fool" looked especially interesting: a no-crust, no-bake pumpkin *thing*.

This last Thanksgiving, I made Thanksgiving Omelets, with thanksgiving-themed ingredients folded in. I'm telling you this just in case you're looking for even more fun and cheap Thanksgiving ideas.

After reading this book several times in the bookstore, I finally decided that I had to have it, if only to laugh along with the young and beautiful people at their zany, crazy, money-saving soirees.
