Excerpt:

Futures trading offers a good opportunity for other people to invest in. trading in futures contracts offers people the unique opportunity to invest in something other than stocks. Although sometimes they also operate in the same manner, futures trading presents a different method of earning revenues for the amount invested on it.

There are certain advantages that futures trading offers to interested investors. One of them is that such instruments are considered highly leveraged investments. In order for an investor to own a futures contract, he only needs to invest a small fraction of the value of the contract. Most investors only invest about ten percent of the contract's value in exchange for trading them. This way, investors may be able to trade larger amounts of commodities than if he ever bought the commodities outright...

Excerpt from book introduction:

Introduction
There are many futures options techniques that can be profitable. They can
range from buying and selling options based on volatility to trading ratio
backspreads based on the technical analysis of the underlying futures
market.
One way is to trade spreads that can profit from time decay. You can sell
options which you believe will lose more time value than the options you
buy.
The key is to find techniques that have an advantage when you put the trade
on. What I will discuss are futures options trades that have this advantage.
Trades that have a special quality that you can spot before you enter into it.
You will be able to see what options are “cheaper” or more “expensive”
compared to another option. Not by price or volatility necessarily but by the
price per day. Even though an option might be more expensive than another,
it might be cheaper in terms of volatility or price per day. Keep your eyes
open to things ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ken Roberts is the MAN!
I'm a pawnbroker.Yes, a real one.I thought I knew how to make money until I read this course. Then I went out and bought (used, for cheap) every other thing the Ken Roberts Co. had put out.

The man makes it SO simple to make money in commodities.Yes, you've got to have $2,000-$5,000 to start out.Yes, it takes a tremendous pair of cojones to even enter markets where people say that "you're doomed".

But I'm trading corn right now, and I'm up about $1,000 on an initial investment of $338.I'm also trading canola (very tiny contract) and am ahead a few hundred bucks on that.

Ken's TWMPMM course is not perfect, but it's an excellent introduction into trading commodities. ... Read more

From the supplier: Contracts for the Chicago Board of Trade's (CBOT) new catastrophe insurance futures have been boosted by Lloyd's of London's financial situation and lessened capacity. Although CBOT does not expect to exceed Lloyd's or Bermudan companies in catastrophe insurance, futures trading activity reached $5-6 million from 1,800 contracts at the end of Oct 1993. In Sept 1993, a rush of hurricane insurance futures contracts began what appears to be a trend for increased use of CBOT's innovative futures.

Product Description
Explores two neglected mathematical tools essential for competing successfully in today's frenzied commodities markets: quantity, which shows the proper amounts a trader should trade for a given market and system, and intercorrelation of returns (diversification), which shows not only which markets and systems to trade, but how to diversify with respect to trading the right quantities for each market. By using these lesser known tools in conjunction with the more popular trade/system selection tools, readers will see mathematically how success in the markets can be achieved, and how``success'' without using all three is most likely incidental. In addition, non-stationary distribution of profits and losses and drawdowns are incorporated into the discussions to expose traders to the highs and lows of commodities markets and how best to leverage their assets. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Top notch
I found this book to be amazingly good. Equities traders should be forwarned that "Optimal f" is employed here for commodities traders that can make use of big margin, but Vince may have addressed this issue in his more recent books.

It seems a quite a few people get angry or perplexed by optimal f, and the reasons boil down to a handful: Objection: Employing Optimal f will introduce you to levels of risk (large drawdowns) you find disagreeable. Response: That's OK, the mathematical reasoning is not invalidated by the extent to which one is risk averse. If you don't like using the largest historical loss to calculate Optimal f, you can use far larger datasets to produce more radical outliers, or even estimate catastrophic (percentage) losses.

Objection: The whole scheme seems a little too radical. Response: This is the very thing that makes the book so refreshing. Vince has done his own thinking, and he has done quite a bit of thinking very carefully. I wish I had him on my team.

Objection: The book contains too much math. Response: yes, this is mathematical stuff we are dealing with. You can trade more simply, but some of us want ideas for a better edge.

Objection: The book contains primitive math. Response: this is a product of the author's kindly tone. He is not attempting to astound you with his knowledge, but advancing new ideas in plain language, and try to keep the stragglers up with the main pack as they read. I found the tone conciliatory and courteous.

Throughout, Vince does his own thinking, and the burden of the book is not what you usually find. Most trading books I have read contain a little useful material, but seems to have been launched mainly to gain the author fame and income. This book is different. Vince has real ideas, thinks way beyond the "safe zone" and the book has completely reshaped my understanding of money management.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of a difficult topic
... this book is incredible.I have a degree in mathematics and the principles expressed are extremely sound -- but far more important than the formulas are the first couple of chapters which cause you to view trading in a very different, and statistical, manner.Although the theories in this book can really only be applied to a trading system (which I haven't really used), after reading this book over several times I understand that there is a mathematical certainty that I will eventually lose my trading capital if I don't start approaching trading in a more systematic fashion.Anyway, I highly recommend it -- the sections on gambling theory alone are worth buying it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware applying optimal f to actual trading
The problem with optimal f is that the calculation is highly dependent on the largest loss on a trade (not drawdown) experienced in backtesting. If you use optimal f and the largest loss in actual trading is greater than the loss experienced in backtesting, you will go bankrupt. Vince deals with this problem in an offhanded manner by suggesting that the actual f you use should be "padded". OK, so in the end you don't even use the actual optimal f, you pad it. And how much do I pad it by? Vince is silent on this question. So the purpose of optimal f - to decide by formula how much capital to allocate to a trade - is totally negated by the fact that you must "pad" optimal f. And you must pad it by a qualitativly determined amount because, again, Vince gives no formula on how much to pad it by. Optimal f is totally useless for system traders or any other trader for that matter.

1-0 out of 5 stars full of fluff, platitudes, generalities, and inaccuracies
"This book is about mathematical tools". That's the first sentence of Vince, who as it turns out markets his books as heavy on math. I'dbet that he never had college classes in math, or physics, or financefor that matter. His book is full of mathematical depths like explainingwhy 1+2*3 is equal to 7, not to 9, or giving four reasons why asterisks isthe best symbol for multiplication. Another brilliant example is when heillustrates how to combine three assets with different weights: 10% of A,10% of B, 80% of C; 10% of A, 20% of B, 70% of C, and then three more pagesof other different combinations. General math level of this book is a levelof B-student in the seventh grade who has never derived a mathematicalformula or proved mathematical fact. Then, considerable part of the book isauthors comments on trading wisdom, like "first loss is the bestloss". Then, there are some ramblings on normal ditributions andCapital asset pricing theory. About 60 pages are appendices on completelyirrelevant topics like he writes Black-Scholes formula, or normaldistribution, or his grandiose program duplicated in C and Basic.

The"stuff" of this book, which is the so-called "f-ratio"is explained on about ten pages. You can understand it, although it is nota clear explanation. Better probably to read it where the author got it inthe first place. It is difficult to say if f-ratio has much practicalimportance because of assumption of indefinite divisibility of tradingcontracts.

Most of all this book reminded me a project done overnight fora school or college class where you put a little stuff in the middle andthen pad it for volume with anything you can come up with because you needto satisfy the minimum length requirement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best investment money management book out there
I bought this book about 4 years ago and put it on the shelf for later reading (I collect books in this subject area). I sure wish I read it thoroughly at an earlier date. Concerning the area of money management asrelated to investing, this is simply the best book I have ever seen, andlike I said, I collect books dealing with this subject. While this book atfirst seems oriented towards the futures markets, its principles may beapplied to any market. Personally, I invest in stocks, not futures. Justthis weekend, using the theory discussed in this book, I set up aspreadsheet that I feel confident will greatly improve my trading returnsin the future. Highly recommended. The material is explained very well andvery thoroughly and is very convincing. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The BEST book on buying/sell gold out there!!!
So why on earth did I give it 3 stars, lets take a look at some of the other books out there first to see why it's the best. The two main books out there are listed in bundle of books customers usually buy together, "GoldWatcher" and "RichDad adviser series"..........Gold Watcher was a long boring book that referenced everything under the sun, but references died upon talking about investing. It didn't give you any follow up research in technical or fundamental analysis how too type stuff. The authors left out so much information on subjects because you could tell they were making serious money off clients who were using thier services(which they shamelessly plugged the entire book), and didn't want to actually tell people how to invest. And the RichDad series book is just an intro to the world of gold, everyone should read it, but it doesn't even begin to teach you anything about investing solo style.

And finally we get to this book, the author seems to have covered everything he could think of, what to buy, what not to buy, when to sell, how to sell, formulas, yada yada.........He did the best he could. But the problem is.........

1. He really needs to learn how to reference stuff, I wanted to follow up on so much of his stuff but just couldn't, because if he didn't have to legally reference something, then he didn't.

2. His technical analysis course was a good try, but seriously though, dedicating a couple pages to a subject that entire books are written on is just a waste. He gets marked down for trying to do it himself and not referring his readers to more talented easier to understand books.

3. There are several subjects of study that he mentions but never actually expands on, and never gives advice on where to look for research.

So these are my problems I have with the book. In a room full of zero's this ones the 6 out of 10. The book gets major credit for truly being the only one stop shop book around for gold, because while others claim to do the same, they simply don't. You could read this book and this one alone and not loose your shirt, and even make money on the process. But really in order to be a good independent investor you need to read books in straight fundamentals, technical analysis, and on. Hard work really is the key, and not just one book. ... Read more

Appropriatefor both beginning as well as experienced traders, this bookdescribes in detail how the author, Angelo Namrevo, went from losingtrade after trade to winning trade after trade. In the back of hisbook you will find copies of actual brokerage statements showing his$5,000 account growing to $11,735 in 4 months' time through 17successive winning trades.

Mr. Namrevo does not guarantee this will be every reader's experience, but certainly each reader will understand why he switched fromstandard commodity trading approaches to an unconventional approachknown as "scale trading." Every technique the author used toaccomplish 17 successive winning commodity trades is explained indetail, including: how to know which markets to trade and which tostay away from; how to determine exactly when to buy and when to sell;and how to trade without daily charts or computers.

Some unsolicited comments from readers include:

"I love your approach to trading, and I know full well that withproper money management and controls (as you know to do per yourwritings and analysis), traders could and should become long-termaccounts instead of here today and gone tomorrow."[J.C., a futuresbroker who started in 1977.]

"I read The S.I.M.P.L.E. System in one sitting and couldn't put itdown. It was funny, informative, fast paced, and thoroughlyenjoyable!"[J.K.]

1-0 out of 5 stars What is SIMPLE?
In this book he never really puts together what SIMPLE really means . The story about how he became a trader are a little hard to believe. He couldn't recognize that he was being scammed twice, turning his life upsidedown then all of a sudden he understands the futures market in a few months. He had such a brief trading history and then writes a bookabout atechnique that is not exclusive . Much too pricey for the content!
