Extractions: 2 April, 1997 BANJUL, GambiaA special June festival is planned in this beautiful West African country. Organizers hope the "Roots: Homecoming Festival" will attract Blacks from throughout the Diaspora to Gambia to celebrate African history and culture. The festival was first conceived by the late author Alex Haley, who traced his family roots to Gambia. Mr. Haley, who wrote the 1970s bestseller "Roots," which was later made into a movie and inspired Black Americans to trace their family ancestry, asked Gambians to "call home" all Africans for a celebration of their history and culture. Mr. Haley died in 1992. The festival is in its second year and planned for June 14th-21. The event promises to bring Black people together in Gambia, a land which could easily be renamed "the land of God" because of its colorful landscapes and natural beauty.

Extractions: Banjul Named after The River Gambia which flows through its length from East to West for three hundred miles, The Gambia is a small country, 500 km long and 25 to 50 km wide. It has been made famous in the rest of the world by Alex Haley, author of Roots, tracing his ancestors back to the village of Juffure. "Roots" and the tv serialization of this novel directed the eyes of the world on to the plight of the Africans that were taken into slavery and their struggle for emancipation. This struggle lasted for over 300 years and at the cost of millions of lives. The Gambia not only offers unspoiled traditional villages and superb beaches but is also a stable political environment. Mysterious Wassu Stone Circles are located 25 km northwest of Georgetown near the town of Kuntaur. Banjul is the capital of Gambia. Until 1973, it was known as Bathhurst. Banjul is a port city on the Atlantic Ocean and lies near the mouth of the Gambia river.

Extractions: Table of Contents Alumni Photos Monthly Update Board of Directors Sponsorship Levels ... Home Page GRIOTS OF WEST AFRICA by Dwight Nathaniel Webster-Benjamin Franklin High Dating all the way back to the twelfth century, Griots were always an important part of West African civilization. Although the music and singing is always pleasing to the ears of the people listening, most outsiders do not know the history, and role of the Griot in West African culture. Many years ago history was not recorded by being written down. Therefore, the only way to record history was to remember the events that happened and pass down the information from generation to generation. Usually the information was either memorized, recited, or sung. Griots who did not sing or play a musical instrument were respected just as much as those who did because of their great knowledge of the events in history. Bing a Griot is a tradition that is passed from father to son. Griots are found primarily in West African countries. The countries they are found in are primarily Muslim. It is believed by many people that the Griot's music could have been the roots for music such as the blues. A Griot is usually classified as an oral historian. Griots are usually traveling families. They move from city to city and town to town playing the Kora and singing about history passed on to them by their mothers and fathers. The Kora is a 21 stringed harp-lupe with a wide range of sounds and notes. Each Kora is different and each Kora is made especially for the person who will be playing it. The Kora is tuned much like a guitar by tightening and loosening the strings. In the Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and Senegal the Griot usually play and sing at the same time.

Extractions: Table of Contents Alumni Photos Monthly Update Board of Directors Sponsorship Levels ... Home Page HOW DO PEOPLE IN AFRICA LIVE? by Ciera Nicole Foley-O. Perry Walker Extension No single statement provides an accurate answer, because diversity characterizes the continent, its peoples, and their ways of living. Africa contains more than 50 countries and territories. Its people belong to more than 500 ethnic groups and speak more than 600 languages. Some live in urban high rise apartments, others in traditional types of rural dwellings well adapted to the environment. Widely differing styles of life exist within a single nation, and often spill over political boundaries. Yet, certain similarities tie its people together. They share a struggle for survival, the desire to worship, appear attractive, and express their culture through art. The ways people live and the values they share are directly related to their environment, to resources and technologies available, and to neighboring peoples. Strong bonds to family, community and ethnic groups form the basis for the social structure of African peoples. Family and community lives are concerned with the raising of children, the guarantee of the continuance of the group. I enjoyed this field study experience of KTA. I learned that students at John F. Kennedy High School in Dakar, Senegal attend school in shifts. Some went in the morning and others went in the evening. In school they were studying about New Orleans. Many wore uniforms and ate lunch at home. They spoke both French and English.
