As such astrology has witnessed continuous development and proliferated into many branches and divisions, all of which are equal in importance. Gemmology or the scientific and ethnic study of gemstones is an important and integral part of applied astrology. It is so popular among the Indian public that no one is certain as to when it had actually come into practice. Use of precious gems and stones has been an ancient practice in India. Some people believe that it is one or two thousand years old science while others maintain that science and art of gemmology originated about five or ten thousand years ago. Scriptural evidences however show that concept of gemmology is as old as the creation itself. A very famous hymn says: During medieval period also, various scholars shed light on the science of gemmology. They authored many great scriptures as well. Acharya Varahmihir was the most prominent of those great scholars. A scripture Vrihat Samhita written by Varahmihir still has a wide recognition among the gemologists. It has a whole chapter, Ratnadhyay devoted to the comprehensive description of the gemstones. Among Puranas, Agnipurana contains exhaustive description about gemmology.

Extractions: At the 1997 Tucson AGTA show, one of the authors (CYW) saw some unusual tourmalines that were reportedly from recent workings in Zambia. Marc Sarosi Co., of Los Angeles, was marketing this material as "mixed-color" tourmaline: Colors available include light to medium toned desaturated pink, orange, green, and yellowish green, as well as colorless, and individual fashioned stones frequently contain regions of two or more of these colors. Coincidentally, we found that the chemistry of these tourmalines was unusual, with elevated contents of Bismuth(Bi). Location and Access The multi colored tourmalines described in this report were found in a field in the Kalungabeba area of the Lundazi district, according to Mr. Sarosi, who visited the site in early 1997. The stones were originally discovered by a person who was digging a hole for an outhouse. A rough dirt road leads to this site from Lundazi; it is best traveled by four-wheeled drive vehicle. During the rainy season, from about late December until March, the area is often inaccessible. Mining and Production The Kalungabeba deposit is alluvial, and the tourmaline-bearing gravel also contains spessartine, aquamarine, and dispersed quartz. At the time of Mr. Sarosi's visit, there were no known gem-bearing pegmatites in the immediate vicinity of this field, although Mr. Sarosi reports that subsequent mining has unearthed spessartine garnet-bearing pegmatites.

Extractions: November 27, 2001 - The jewelry industry relies heavily on the U.S. Postal Service to ship gems and jewelry throughout the United States. As most are aware, the recent incidences of people being infected by anthrax spores sent through the mail has caused the USPS to seek ways to protect postal employees and the public from this potential threat. One part of this effort is to use a technique that actually kills anthrax spores (and other biological agents) in the mail as it is being processed. One company with which the postal service has contracted, SureBeam (a subsidiary of Titan Corp.), makes equipment designed to combat food-borne pathogens such as salmonella. SureBeam provides a type of linear accelerator that creates a beam of high-energy electrons. In effect, they are using irradiation to kill the microorganisms that often contaminate food. The Process A spokesman for SureBeam told us that the actual dosage being used by the postal system is 56 kilograys, which is equivalent to 5.6 megarads. This figure was later confirmed by Laura Smith, Quality Assurance Manager for Titan Scan Technologies, another Titan Corp. subsidiary, who agreed to run tests for us under the same conditions that are being used by the post office.
