Equipment Needed RUNNING AROUND IN CEMETERIES!! Why Cemetery Records are important The only record you will find about some infants and little children and some women will be in a cemetery right off the tombstone. In the census of 1790 they may be mentioned as "infant child" or , or " female 5-10 years old" . You might not find the actual name of the child or the woman until you find the tombstone or a cemetery record in an old ledger. See the article, "Looking for the Ladies in the Family Tree" by Juliana Smith (Ancestry.com). Types of Cemeteries There are two broad categories: Traditional The traditional cemetery is park-like and many are also arboretums. They are extensively landscaped and contain large gardens. The traditional cemetery has above ground tombstones, family mausoleums or columbarium and stone memorials. The traditional cemetery may have a public mausoleum and a chapel for funeral services. Many have a funeral home on the property as well as a cremetorium. The traditional cemetery can have quite a history and contain artistic statuary. Famous persons will have found their resting places in your local traditional cemetery. Traditional cemeteries can be: Family burial plots

Extractions: You may already know this, but keep in mind that Catherine the Great of Russia (who was German herself) encouraged large numbers of Germans to settle and farm in what we know call Ukraine (from Odessa on the Black Sea northward, parallel to modern Romania) and in south-east Poland where it borders on Russia. Catherine wanted to settle vast areas of good farmland not then being cultivated, and also wanted the latest techniques from Western Europe to be brought in, to modernize Russia's very outdated and primitive methods. This was in the time period 1760's until her death in 1796. These German-speakers stayed largely to themselves, kept their language and religion, and were very prosperous. After the 1860's, they started to be persecuted by various Tzars who wanted only the Eastern Orthodox religion in Russia, by the Russian peasants who were jealous and wanted the large land holdings of the Germans, and later by the Communists under Stalin.
