Extractions: The human locus and allele nomenclature outlined by Shows et al. (1987) will be adopted. Thus, present standard nomenclature will be converted to the new nomenclature and the new nomenclature used for naming any new identified genes. The new terminology will be much more adaptable for use in computer databases, and will appear as entered on non-graphics screens, except for italics. The Somes nomenclature should be directly convertible to the new nomenclature in many cases by the Resource Panel appointed by the Nomenclature Committee. All new names should be reviewed for duplication and standard nomenclature.

Extractions: Hot weather can have a severe impact on poultry performance. Production efficiency can be affected long before the temperature reaches a level at which survival becomes a concern. Table 1 is a general guide to the reaction of adult poultry to various temperatures. Heat stress begins when the ambient temperature climbs above 80oF and is readily apparent above 85oF. When a bird begins to pant, physiological changes have already started within its body to dissipate excess heat. Even before the bird reaches this point, anything that you do to help birds remain comfortable will help maintain optimum growth rates, hatchability, egg size, egg shell quality, and egg production.

Extractions: These papers present a mathematical theory of genetic algorithms (GAs) based on quantitative genetics and probability theory. GAs are extended to population based search methods using probability distributions instead of string recombination/crossover. The first paper: "The equation for the response to selection and its use for prediction" extends classical quantitative genetics methods. It argues that string recombination/crossover is mainly driven by low order schemata. It derives difference equations for univariate marginal distributions. It will be published in issue 5(3) of Evolutionary Computation. The second paper: "Schemata, Distributions and Graphical Models in Evolutionary Optimization" shows that a new algorithm, called factorized distribution algorithm FDA, is an ideal "schema" algorithm. Each schema defines a correponding marginal distribution. By using a valid factorization of the probability distribution, FDA fulfills exactly the schema equation for all schemata containing the factors. The theory of FDA is based on conditional independence graphs used in statistics and learning theory (Bayes networks). FDA optimizes all deceptive functions, but in addition functions with overlapping variables. The third paper :"Convergence Theory and Applications of the Factorized Distribution Algorithm" shows why FDA converges so fast. Separable fitness functions are transformed to generalized linear functions with metavariables having multiple alleles.
