Courses with numbers enclosed in brackets are not offered in the current academic year. 131f Introduction to Environmental Geology An examination of both the controls of human activities by geology and the impact of humans on natural geologic processes; a survey of fundamental geologic processes and associated hazards (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, etc.); the exploitation of geologic resources (energy, minerals, water, soils); and topics such as pollution, waste disposal, and land-use planning. An opportunity to discuss, from a geologic perspective, the ramifications of and potential solutions to problems associated with Earth's resources. Not open to students who have already completed Geology 141. Three credit hours.

PHYSICAL GEOLOGY A study of earth materials and processes including rocks and minerals, streams, glaciers, geologic structures, earthquakes, and plate tectonics. Students acquire scientific knowledge about the earth's formation, movement of crustal plates, modifications of landforms, water cycles and resources, soil preservation, and geologic hazards to mankind. Students use geologists' techniques and methods in the pursuit of scientific inquiry. Prerequisite: Completion of DVST 0510 (or equivalent placement test score). GEOL 1200 (4 CR.) HISTORICAL GEOLOGY A study covering evolution of the solar system and Earth's oceans and atmosphere. Students learn to infer geologic history through careful study of fossils, rocks, and geologic structures in North America. We discuss rocks and minerals, volcanoes and earthquakes, streams, erosion, and flooding, glaciers, characteristics of coastlines, and plate tectonics. GEY 108 Historical Geology - This course examines the evolution of the Earth and life on the Earth through time. We will discuss how the planet formed over 4.6 billion years ago, how the atmosphere initially formed and how it has changed with time. We will talk about the how the first life forms may have developed. GEY 109 Environmental Geology - Geologic problems involving people, earth resources and the environment will be examined. GEY 150 Explorations in Geology - These are lecture, lab, or seminar courses on selected, introductory-level topics in geology, especially those of interest to non-science majors.
