Extractions: Wadi Shumylya, Yemen The goals of this project are to document past interactions between human activity, landscape modification, and climate in a region which is presently extremely arid and supports little vegetation. Abundant archaeological evidence exists that suggests agriculture was much more widespread and evolved alongside the development of irrigation technology during a period when rainfall was more plentiful. We are looking for additional evidence in the region to test the hypothesis that cultivation of domesticated crops was being carried out as early as 7,000 years ago, and even in the earliest agricultural activities, humans were having a substantial impact on the landscape through the modification of fluvial systems. Research is also being conducted to document the timing and magnitude of changing precipitation patterns in the region using a variety of paleoclimate proxy data. Research is being carried out collaboratively with the Minnesota RASA (Roots of Agriculture in Southern Arabia) project, headed by Dr. Joy McCorriston, and the Ministry of Antiquities in Yemen. Funding for the project has been provided by the National Science Foundation, University of Minnesota, and Canadian Occidental Petroleum Company (CANOXY). Fieldwork began in February-March, 1998, and hopefully will continue in January-February 2000 (depending on funding). View looking across the southwest corner of the Arabian peninsula towards Africa. The Arabian Sea is in the center left, and the Red Sea is on the Right. Wadi Shumylya is part of a tributary system to Wadi Hadramout, a region of extensive archaeological exploration. Prior to about 5,000 years ago, seasonal monsoonal rains originating in the Indian Ocean - Arabian Sea penetrated farther north across the southern Arabian peninsula than they do today. Although still moisture limited, adequate rainfall and more abundant vegetation supported the cultural shift to agrarian subsistence farming, perhaps as early as 7,000 - 8,000 years ago.

Extractions: Faculty, staff, and students in Department of Geological Sciences at CSULB are engaged in a variety of Earth science research projects, many of them centered in the western United States. We are fortunate to have strong equipment holdings, particularly in exploration geophysics and organic geochemistry, that allow department personnel to pursue cutting-edge research. We are actively collaborating with colleagues at the United States Geological Survey, California Institute of Technology, California State University at Northridge, Irvine Valley College, Long Beach City College, California State University at Fullerton, San Diego State University, University of Southern California, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and several others. Note: In July, 1996, the Department of Geological Sciences, with funding from the National Science Foundation and the generous support of the College of Natural Sciences and the University, completed construction on a NEW geochemistry laboratory. Extractions: The scientific staff of the Geology Division of the Science Institute consists of eight faculty members of the Department of Natural Sciences, and nine research scientists at the institute as well as two technical asssistants. Additionally, 18 research assistants and students sponsored by different research funds and private companies were employed for longer and shorter periods of time. The research projects in the Division of Geology are focused on geological and geographical problems. In geology the emphasis is on sedimentology, mainly sedimentary facies and lithostratigraphy, tephrochronology, Quaternary geology and Pleistocene and Holocene stratigraphy, geochemistry and experimental petrology, geothermics, the chemistry of surface waters and chemical weathering, palaeontology of Pliocene to Holocene faunas and floras, and natural hazards. In geography the emphasis is upon environmental geography, air photo interpretation and land utilization, and human geography. The Geology Division runs an electronic and mecanical workshop as well as a thin section laboratory. Additionally, the division runs geochemical and sedimenatary laboratories.
