The Redbud, Cercis canadensis grows easily and seeds freely in acidic soils of the eighteen counties forming Redbud District. Seventy-two clubs are located in twenty-two cities and towns and range in size from a dozen members to over fifty. Easternmost portions of Atlanta in DeKalb County are part of Redbud. Begun in 1975 by a black sharecropper, the lawsuit alleged that the state's black universities were inferior to those attended by whites. The settlement is expected to set a precedent for other states dealing with issues surrounding enrollment standards. According to Hoxby, the ratio of gains on standardized tests to per-student spending in public schools with voucher programs was higher than in schools in which students didn't have a choice.

Extractions: Morris News Service SAVANNAH, Ga. - For Catherine, the routine's the thing - the teachers, the other children, the daily sequence of events. So when a newspaper photographer walks into her classroom, an interloper scattering the quiet pattern of her day, the diminutive 6-year-old simply walks up behind him, plants both palms squarely on his back, and with cheerful determination - and a strength belying her size - pushes him right out of the room. Her teacher is not surprised. "Our students tend to have a hard time with any kind of change," Patrice Huffman says of her young charges, now halfway through the Matthew Reardon Center's six-week summer program for children with neurological disabilities. "They have the best internal clocks going, so they do better with a set routine." Although not diagnosed as autistic, Catherine exhibits many symptoms of the often-misunderstood condition. She has difficulty communicating and often finds her senses overloaded by the simple, everyday sounds of the classroom. She spends much of the day with her fingers in her ears. Still, her teachers say, she's not the same child who came into the program three weeks earlier.

Extractions: POSTED: Dec. 28, 2002 12:34 p.m. Children with severe disabilities used to be hidden away, shut up in their homes and rarely seen by anyone outside their families, or they were consigned to institutions where they lived out their lives without ever being part of a normal home life. Parents like Dana Hartis, whose son, Ethan Gray, has Down syndrome and autism, who were unwilling to relinquish their beloved children to an uncertain fate in the hands of strangers, had no place to turn for help except family and friends. In the last 30 years, we've made some progress in our understanding of the great gift such children bring to those who are willing to accept it, not only to those within their families, but to all who come to know them. They help us comprehend what life is about at its most intense and precious, the deepest bonds of love, selfless and unconditional. They teach us to re-evaluate our priorities. As they themselves are challenged, they challenge us to grow and find new strength and wisdom within ourselves. They teach us to live in the present and they bring the purest joy, offered up in a moment of shared humor or special trust. If we fail children like these, what is the purpose of being a civilized society?
