Extractions: The Georgia Police Corps is a federally funded, law enforcement assistance program operated in the State of Georgia by the Georgia Public Safety Training Center. The long-range goal of the program is to address violent crime by increasing the number of law enforcement officers with advanced education and training. College scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to college students who agree to serve as law enforcement officers, assigned to community patrol positions, for a minimum of four years after graduation. Georgia is one of many states participating in the National Police Corps, which was created as a component of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. As with most federal programs, funds are provided to the states so the program may be implemented at the local level. The Georgia Police Corps offers substantial financial incentives to both the student participants and the law enforcement agencies that ultimately employ them. Student Benefits Participants are eligible to receive up to $30,000 for college related educational expenses.

Extractions: Contents Introduction Traditionally recognized roles of teachers are being redefined; they are becoming classroom managers with increasing responsibilities and accountability for improving student progress and the quality of education programs. In this current wave of education reform, a key element for enabling teachers to successfully take on these more complex functions is being overlooked by policymakers, education practitioners, teacher educators, and professional and employee organizations: the important, but under-appreciated role of a skilled paraprofessional workforce to assist teachers and other professional educators.

Extractions: Report 1, 1994 Previous section Next section Contents Pathways ... home page Concerns about the quality of instruction in our public schools directly relate to the quality of teachers in the schools. It is within this context that schools and higher education are closely linked and uniformly criticized. Questions about how future teachers are taught, what they are taught, and where they are taught are at the center of education reform. John Goodlad has suggested that for reform efforts to be successful we must have "simultaneous renewal" of schools and teacher preparation programs (Goodlad, 1990). But recent national and state studies have concluded that simultaneous renewal cannot be achieved without substantial support from state policymakers. A 1993 report by the Education Commission of the States on linking teacher education to school reform maintains that at present no state agency is charged with achieving a unified approach to K-12 and higher education coordination. The report's author, former Colorado chief state school officer Calvin F. Frazier, writes that "the boards of the two organizations rarely meet on issues of teacher education. The agency heads seldom confer on the quality issues involving teacher education. There is no modeling of coordination at the top." (Frazier, 1993, pp. 10-13)
