From play groups and cooking groups, to cookouts and yard sales you never know what the hard working Resident Managers will come up with next. In fact, this year, the American Holiday Celebrations Party received a regional award for its educational components. Don't be surprised if you come home one day and see a petting zoo and pony rides! But our programs are not all fun and games. Being the spouse of a Tech student comes with its own unique challenges. By working with other departments on campus including the counseling center, and Office of International Education (OIE) we are able to provide a weekly spouse support group and other programs. Adjusting to having a spouse in college can be hard enough, imagine if you are from a different country. Programs on American Holiday Traditions, American Culture and Communicating in the States help our International community. Extractions: Eligibility All Family housing applicants must be, at the time of occupancy, full-time, registered students at Georgia Tech progressing toward the completion of a degree program. Postdoctoral fellows, researchers, and scientists are not eligible for assignment. Current students are not eligible for continued residency in Family Housing after completing their degree programs. All family housing residents must be an undergraduate or graduate married student couples with or without children. Single student parents living full time with dependent children and single graduate students may also qualify for Family Housing. However, married students are given assignment priority over single students. Single graduate students or older undergraduate students are eligible to apply only for Efficiency or Studio apartments. Families with more than four children cannot be accommodated. The student, spouse, and children must all jointly occupy the assigned unit for a minimum for 20 days each month. Children listed on the application must be physically present at the time of occupancy. Housing is provided for the student, spouse, and children only. Guests are permitted, but their stay must be limited to no more than a two-week period. Single graduate students may not share an apartment with another person. Subleases are not permitted within Family Housing.

"If we ever outgrow this building and build another headquarters," explained Mark Lassman-Eul, "We can easily turn this one into housing for people." A simple thing, perhaps, but it says much about Habitat, a world-wide program that started with a simple idea and that, sometime this April, will turn over to a Georgia family the 20,000th housing unit it has built or facilitated in the United States and world-wide. The "Habitat model," which by its example has also inspired many more independent low-income housing programs around the country, is based on very simple premises: It takes what its organizers call a "two-pronged approach," seeking cash and help from affluent supporters and the participation of low-income beneficiaries to build decent, low-cost housing, without government participation, as a consciously Christian ministry that bears witness by work, not evangelism. Although Habitat directly funds a few projects, mostly overseas, it primarily spreads its efforts through "affiliation," lending its name and technical advice to independent, community-based non-profit groups that adopt, and sometimes considerably adapt, its model to suit local housing needs and opportunities.

Extractions: Two Navy projects totaling 589 town house units, at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas, and at Naval Station Everett, Washington, were completed in 1997. Service members and their families are now living in their new homes. In 1998, the Air Force awarded a project at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. The company that was awarded this project will design, construct, own, operate, and manage 420 new units of rental housing to serve enlisted families at the base. DoD is evaluating proposals for an up to 160 housing unit project at Marine Corps Logistics Base, Albany, Georgia. The Department projects that the Services will issue more than 30 additional requests for proposals and requests for qualifications by the end of 1999. The Services will continue to nominate more sites each year. In 1996, OSD established the Housing Revitalization Office to help establish this privatization program. With a solid foundation in place in 1998, OSD returned to its traditional program oversight role while maintaining control of the Family Housing Improvement Fund. Program implementation from project development to execution is the responsibility of the Services.
