She spent her childhood in the Summerhill Community and her adulthood in the Old Fourth Ward Community. Ms. York was educated in the Atlanta Public School System. She attended E.P. Johnson Elementary School, David T. Howard Junior High School and Booker T. Washington High School. From there, Ms. York enrolled at Reeds Business College and attended one year, studying Business Practicing, Math and Accounting. She was wedded in Holy Matrimony to the late Tommie Lee Henderson in 1944 and into this union seven (7) children were born, six (6) daughters and one (1) son. She is the grandparent of 11 and the great-grandparent of 15. She began her community activities at the schools, taking part in the PTAs in which her children attended and became Chairperson of various committees and fund raising activities. In 1974, she lobbied with Mrs. Coretta Scott King, the Old Fourth Ward Community and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community to get a memorial in the city of Atlanta honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Mrs. Henderson did volunteer work with Mrs. Janet Wolf, the first superintendent of the National Park Service to create the history of the 57 houses that was designated to the Martin Luther King Historic Site.

The family then enters into a lease agreement with the landlord. The Housing Authority and the landlord enter into a Housing Assistance Contract.
