The proposal to spend $1.2 billion in lease sales on research of renewable energies - part of Bush's pending budget blueprint for fiscal year 2004 - should help temper opposition to drilling in arctic Alaska, said Rebecca Watson, assistant interior secretary for land and minerals management. "One would hope that it would," Watson told The Associated Press. She said it was the first time the administration had proposed spending the proceeds from the oil sales directly on alternative power research. "It fits with the president's national energy policy, which is a balanced approach looking at increasing domestic fossil fuels but also looking ahead to renewable energy," she said in a telephone interview from Washington. "Renewable energy faces some hurdles from a financial standpoint so it needs some more money for research. This type of a proposal would be a big boost," she said.

However, an industry spokesman said Nevada must do more than hope for alternative energy producers to flood the state with power proposals. Steve Munson, chief executive of Vulcan Power Co., a Bend, Ore.-based company that develops alternative energy sources, told the Senate Commerce and Labor Committee that Nevada is an ideal place for geothermal power generation. "The U.S. Department of Energy has called Nevada the Saudi Arabia of geothermal," said Munson, adding that geothermal power is environmentally friendly, cheap and cost-stable. He said geothermal plants are located at hot springs, so they aren't dependent on outside suppliers of fuel that can vary widely in price. "We're kind of a hedge against continued high gas prices," Munson said.

Extractions: Can Alternative Energy Save our Environment by Kevin Sager No one has to be told these days of the effect fossil fuel dependence has had on our environment, our economy, and even our foreign policy. Every year we are told of the harm done by greenhouse gas emissions, the inherent danger of nuclear fission, and the increasing likelihood that we will run out of our supplies of oil within a few decades. We know that the last time our supplies of oil were threatened, during the Arab oil embargo of the 1970s, the result was economic chaos in the west. And still, like a hopeless addict, we continue to buy more and more. But if we admit that we have a problem, like any addict, that in itself would be the first step towards breaking the habit. Contrary to what the apologists tell us time and again, we are not without choices. We do not, as some on the far left occasionally suggest, have to abandon all industry and return to a completely agrarian society. Nor do we face a "Mad Max" type future in which the collapse of the oil market leads to the fall of civilization. In fact, there are a plethora of proven, safe, clean renewable alternatives to fossil fuels and fission which will, in time, allow us to continue to enjoy the standard of living we have grown accustomed to. Everything from solar power, to wind energy, biomass fuels, and even the energy of the Earth itself can be exploited. Take wind energy, for example. The Worldwatch institute in Washington DC has called wind energy "the world's fastest growing energy source." According to the Canadian Wind Energy Association, Canada has far more wind energy potential than its current total use of electricity (about 485,000,000,000 kilowatt-hours used in 1995). For a more specific example, the 18.9 megawatt wind generating plant on Cowley Ridge, Alberta produces more than 55,000,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year - enough for 6,800 typical Canadian homes. If this electricity is used to displace coal-generated electricity, it avoids discharging about 55,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually. Furthermore, the global wind energy potential, even when one excludes environmentally sensitive areas, is roughly five times current global electricity use.

For Slovakia and many other countries are these traditional sources of energy primary. Burning of these fuels has a bad influence on the nature. Therefore, more countries are focusing on alternative sources of energy. The greatest source of energy on the earth is sun. It produces great amount of energy without negative influences on the enviroment. We can exploit this energy indirectly or directly. Indirectly as a water energy, wind energy or biomass conversion. Directly as conversion of solar energy using solar systems. Solar systems are divided into passive and active. The oldest form is passive exploitation of solar energy which includes solar architecture. Therefore, the orientation of buildings - especially big glass areas to the south is efficient in order to save a lot of heating energy. The most effective is orientation of living room to the south. Architecture of buildings can save us more than 10% of energy for heating. There are only few buildings in Slovakia with solar architecture and new buildings are growing very slowly. Most of these houses have are build according to solar architecture because of modern design with large windows.

Geothermal energy was first used to produce electricity in 1904, by a group of Italians who used the steam naturally erupting from the earth to power a generator. The first successful American geothermal plant was built in 1960 at the Geysers in California. There are presently 64 geothermal plants in the United States. Geothermal energy is renewable and does little damage to the environment. Large high temperature geothermal plants typically recycle the water used, injecting it back into the geothermal reservoir. Geothermal plants produce almost no emissions because they do not burn any fuel to produce the electricity they use, and since they sit on top of their energy supply, the amount of emissions produced in transporting this energy source is negligible.
