Extractions: Instruction and Educational Goals The field course introduces students to the field techniques of archaeology and gives them practice identifying artifacts and recording field data that will contribute to an on-going research project. The course focuses on the range of techniques that archaeologists use to locate archaeological sites and assess their cultural significance. Unlike most field schools, which emphasize excavation at a single site, this project exposes students to a wide range of different sites and working conditions. Through participation in data collection, readings on Stone Age Europe, excursions, lectures, and discussion, students will gain insight into the methods archaeologists use to test hypotheses about past human behavior. Students will learn about the Stone Age prehistory and ancient environments of the region through site visits, lectures, and readings. The museum hosts a fine collection of old ship models as well as Sweden's largest UW archaeology library, photo archive, and the national wreck register, which is partially on computers but not on internet Vasa Museum , Stockholm, Sweden. Exhibits the 64 gun battleship sunk in 1628. Researcher placed it on a search list and finally found it. Salvaged in one piece in 1961, helped by private donors and sponsors. Both the text and the map are very useful in finding out about Roman archaeology and would be recommended to both scholarly and popular audiences interested in this specific archaeological park. The individual sections on different excavations are very detailed and well illustrated. They give information on past findings and present concentrations in the specific location. The pictures are not only of the exterior of buildings and ruins but also of the interior giving a different perspective. This site would be useful to anyone studying specific archeological sites or types of architecture. The interior and exterior photographs would be useful for comparison and are not found in many other web sites. This site is a bit complicated in terminology but in general a useful site.

Extractions: The history of archaeological research about megaliths in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern must be seen as part of the history of archaeology in general (Trigger 1989; Schnapp 1996), and as part of the study and interpretation of megaliths in particular (Schirnig 1979; Mohen 1989: chapter 1). The brief overview that follows is based mainly on the accounts of Ewald Schuldt (1972: 9f.) and Christoph Steinmann (1995). In addition, I have consulted the more specific histories of archaeological research by Ludwig Giesebrecht about the period between 1517 and 1737 (1847; 1850/2), by Ingeburg Nilius about Neolithic studies (1971: 9f.), by Horst Keiling about the history of the collection of antiquities and of monument protection (1983), and by Willi Lampe about northern Vorpommern (1991). The beginnings of an interest in archaeological sites in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern reaches back to the collections of curiosities, which included ancient finds, during the Renaissance (see Wollf 1995; cf. Schnapp 1996: chapter 2). The oldest written references to antiquities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern date to the early 16th century. In 1517, Bugenhagen described various ancient sites, and at around the same time Nicolas Marschalk The first recording of an explicit investigation of a megalith dates from 1594 when (probably) professors of the University of Greifswald excavated a site near Buggenhagen, where they found human skeletons as well as stone tools and ancient pots (Giesebrecht 1850/2: 157; see also Temme 1840: 213).

The Berlin Head Office of the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut is working together in this network with several institutions of various countries. abstract : A history of German archaeology during the Nazi period has still to be written, in spite of various contributions that have been published over the last years. New informations and new interpretations are to be gained from the evidence of archival sources which have become much better accessible after 1990. aim and current work : After the reunification of Germany, from 1990 onward, several archives have become accessible which were formerly not. Notably of importance for the archaeology between 1933 and 1945 in Germany and Europe are the contents of the unified Bundesarchiv, the central state archive formerly divided between East (Potsdam, Merseburg) and West (Koblenz, Freiburg, Berlin and elsewhere). Other archives such as those of universities, academies and different kinds of institutions are also being considered. The most curious one is certainly that created by the »Staatssicherheit« (Secret Service, Stasi) of the German Democratic Republic.

Extractions: Documentary projects were undertaken during the second phase of the AREA network (AREA II, December 1999 - October 2000). The unsatisfactory condition of most archaeological archives across Europe, often little known and threatened with neglect, has underscored the urgency of their appropriate documentation. To ensure that these archives are better preserved, valorised and usedby archaeologists, curators, and all those concerned with cultural heritage and managementan extensive uniformly structured database was designed. In the future, it is hoped that this catalogue will contain all the major archival fonds relevant to the history of archaeology. At the present stage of its implementation, however, the database reflects the specific institutional possibilities and research concerns of each of the contributing partners, as briefly indicated below. These specificities should be kept in mind when consulting the Database itself.
