Since 1972, when the musician premiered as a sound creator with British glam rock legend Roxy Music, Eno has broken each successive mold that he's cast himself in: multi-genred, self-styled musician, visual artist, writer, and producer of famous bands such as Devo and U2. This week, the London-based Eno has popped up in Germany, where an exhibition of his art will be complemented by two performances in Bonn, and set for live broadcast over the Internet. The exhibits and performances will take place at the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany), which has made a priority of including new media in its galleries since it opened in 1992. Thursday night's entertainment will be "Sushi! Roti! Reibekuchen! A High-Altitude-Food-Performance with Incidential Music by Slop Shop and Brian Eno." The broadcast will begin at 8 pm Central European Time, or noon Pacific Daylight Time. Special musical friends of Eno will join him.

Extractions: 10:55 AM Aug. 11, 1999 PT STUTTGART, Germany Amidst a sputtering rain, the millennium's last total eclipse cast its shadow across the soggy city at 12:32:55 p.m. It blanketed the area in darkness for two minutes and 17 seconds. The clouds made it difficult to tell when the moon began to traverse the path of the sun, but there was no mistaking its final alignment. Temperatures suddenly fell, colors faded, and day turned to night. Birds, which had erupted into a garrulous evensong at the first hints of the false twilight, were abruptly silent. The world took on a sepia tone, and the sky darkened with the black sun. The mood remained buoyant in the crowd occupying the Schlossplatz, the city's main square, which boasts two castles and neoclassical buildings. Cheers erupted, champagne bottles popped, lovers smooched, and amateur fireworks ignited. Simon Niederhauser, 25, traveled from Switzerland and camped overnight in the main train station to watch the eclipse in Stuttgart. He said the rain didn't bother him. "It's a party, anyway. You never know what's going to happen."

They're all ingredients of what promises to be the nerd adventure of 1999: a planned one-week hike and Linux crash-course in southern Germany. Internet marketing and consulting firm Electric Lichen LLC will organize the excursion, dubbed Linuxbierwanderung Next August, an as-yet-undetermined number of participants will head to southern Bavaria to hike the edge of the Alps, see the Neuschwanstein castle, sample the area's famed brews, and learn Linux tricks from expert programmers. Trip organizers also hope to catch the 11 August total solar eclipse that will black out much of northern and eastern Europe at midday. Jim Gleason and Don Marti of Electric Lichen dreamed up the trip in October while at the Internet World conference in New York. They invited several acquaintances to join them for a beer at the Times Square Brewery, and it was there, throwing back beers with a German Linux user, that the idea for Linuxbierwanderung was born.

The event itself was a mellow enough affair. It drew somewhere between 14,000 (say police) and 100,000 (say organizers), who either met at the Alexanderplatz for the pro-legalization march or joined the throng later in a massive party area set up near the Brandenburg Gate. Probably between 30,000 and 40,000 turned out, about the same as last year. Extractions: German Haus Barn Manning, Iowa 51455 In the 17th and 18th centuries, haus barns (house barns) were a common form of dwelling throughout several areas of Germany, This was especially true in Schleswig-Holstein, a state in the Northwest part of Germany, Many of the Manning area families are descendants of immigrants from that area. As a means of "getting in touch" with our heritage the Manning Heritage Foundation (MHF) began searching for an authentic haus barn in Germany. Two years ago a 300-year-old structure became available near Itzehoe. The owner, Claus Hachmann, needed to remove the structure from his land. Through Dr. Carl Johannson, curator of the Mofsee Open Air Museum, south of Kiel, the MHF was able to locate and seek possession of this building. The Molfsee Museum currently has many examples of German Haus Barns preserved for tourists to view, and luckily for Manning, they already have an example of the style of this barn. They were our advocates to the German government to make it possible for Manning to import this particular building for the purposes of establishing the first German Heritage Museum in the United States. The haus barn is a unique structure that consists of living quarters for not only the family, including bedrooms, sitting, dining and cooking areas, but also areas for housing livestock, farm equipment and feed.
