The national health education standards also provide a framework for schools to create instructional programs that will enable students to become healthy and capable of academic success. What should students who complete an educational experience know and be able to do in support of their own health and the health of their friends and family? That is the central question the national health education standards strive to address. It is also the central question each school district needs to answer when a health education curriculum is being developed or selected for the district. Another way to express this challenge is to discuss the development of health literacy. Health Literacy is defined as "the capacity of an individual to obtain, interpret, and understand basic health information and services and the competence to use such information and services in ways which are health-enhancing" (

Extractions: Driving Tips Dear Fellow Racer, I'm amazed how Stock Car racers are perfectly willing to spend enormous amounts of money to find that extra bit of horsepower, but will not spend a penny on improving something far more importanttheir brain-power. Racers will spend an enormous amount of time working on their race cars, but they are much less likely to take time working on themselves. With competition being so fierce and close in todays' races, each racer has to take time to look for ways to find a unique mental edge. What makes the difference between a good racer and a great racer? It's not the car, it's not luck, it isthe mental advantage! Sports psychologists believe that psychological factors are more important than physical factors when it comes to determining the primary difference between winners and losers. If you talk with any top athlete from golfers, to basketball players, to racers; 99% of them will say that mental strength, determination, concentration, and psychological influences are the most important factors in their success. This mental advantage is what takes them from good to great and from failure to success. I hope you will consider investing in the most important part of your team the driver. Extractions: It was sometimes difficult for Dan and his students to see how they would get from their low performance on beginning of the year evaluations to the high standards that he had set for them. In response, Dan worked with his students to ensure that they were actively involved in setting goals for themselves and measuring their progress. He also created new opportunities for students to achieve and to truly take ownership of their own learning. Students participating in the theater program Dan started traveled to the state theater competition in Austin and received an award for honorable mention in a district theater competition. His students have also created the Gladiator Television Network, a student-run television station. In his own words: At first, when I pushed my kids, some of them fell down, and it was hard to pick them up. I began to work with the students so they would be able to measure their progress and take ownership of their learning. My world history students worked to overcome their fear of essaysand then thought they were a piece of cake. No longer did they dread to write those long, boring paragraphs and began to develop masterpieces. My theater students overcame the worlds #1 fearbeing in front of the public. Not only did they perform skits that they wrote, they also did it in front of their peers. Most importantly, my students created a student-run television network from the ground up in a little less than 5 months. They all are simply amazing and drive me to teach every day.

And soccer coaches at the Scotts Valley/San Lorenzo Valley (SVSLV) Soccer Club will learn this week just how to train their players about the "mental aspects" of the game. Jim Thompson, the founder and director of Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), will return to the SVSLV club this Wednesday evening, August 14, to present a workshop entitled, "Coaching the Mental Game." PCA is a Stanford University-based organization that conducts clinics and training seminars for coaches and league administrators that create a positive environment for young athletes and teach them life lessons through sport. Thompson has previously presented to SVSLV Soccer Club coaches PCA's basic coaches' workshop, which emphasizes being a "Double-Goal Coach" striving to win, but also striving to teach life lessons about teamwork, respect, perseverance and goal-setting. "The 'Coaching the Mental Game' workshop gives coaches practical tools they can use to train their players to be mentally disciplined, focused competitors," Thompson notes. "The workshop focuses on teaching players how to handle the pressures of competing, how to play at their highest level when the stakes are high, and how to rebound from mistakes and lack of focus. It's a comprehensive session, and coaches will learn tips they can implement in their very next practice."
Forage-Livestock System Components Example of a Vision Statement We work to raise our family on a small farm toteach our children Visioning and goal setting help focus management efforts. http://www.caf.wvu.edu/~forage/foragewwwa.htm
Extractions: Markets Vision Vision is knowing where "you-all" want yourselves, your family, and your farm to be 5 to 10 years from now. It is a planned destination. We all need to have a vision of what we want out of life. Preferably we should write it down and review it on a regular basis. Remember: "If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there." The vision needs to be larger than the farm. Visioning is one important way to see how the farm operation fits into the rest of life. We need to answer the question: How do my activities and commitments in the home and community (school, church, local organizations) relate to my vision of the farm? I use the term "you-all" since a successful vision should include all members of the management team. These can be the members of a farm family or hired managers on a larger commercial operation. All team members should have a vision of what they want or need. The vision for the family farm or farm business should help the individual achieve the visions they have for themselves. Team work occurs best when the team members share in developing a group vision. The vision for the farm operation should include things such as: how you want the farm and home to look

Extractions: In 1954, Grover Dale showed up at Bob Fosse's audition for "The Pajama Game." Thinking it didn't matter that he was dancing in the back row, Grover was certain that good dancers get noticed regardless of which line you were in. He was wrong. He didn't make the cut. For a young man destined to have a lengthy career, Grover had a lot of learning to do. His inexperience may have kept him hidden from Bob Fosse, but it didn't get in the way of being cast by Michael Kidd the following year for "L'il Abner." After a full season as an "employed" dancer, Grover auditioned for the notorious genius/task master, Jerome Robbins. Forsaking the tendency to dance in the back row, Grover stepped forward and competed with hundreds of other dancers eager to be cast in the original production of "West Side Story." Five days after signing a contract, Grover arrived at the first rehearsal with Snowboy's eight lines of dialogue memorized. He assumed that was the only preparation necessary. Once again, Grover had more lessons to learn.
Professional Portfolio Development Guide thoughtprovoking process of self evaluationreflection, decision-making, and goalsettingthat takes they are as teachers and to be aware of how they teach. http://www.edu.uleth.ca/fe/ppd/sec3.html
Extractions: What is the value of a professional portfolio? A professional portfolio has value as both a process of assessment and evaluation and as a product of that process. As is true of many processes, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. That is, the meshing of self and collaborative evaluation with products that demonstrate the outcomes of those evaluations is greater than either the processes or the products alone. Momentarily, as a way of clarifying the value of portfolios, especially to those who have little or no portfolio experience, an artificial separation will be made. Consideration will be given first to the value of the process and second to the value of the product. Process. Developing a professional portfolio is a complex, thought-provoking process of self evaluationreflection, decision-making, and goal settingthat takes place over time and in authentic contexts. If begun as a student teacher, it has potential to be a vehicle for career-long professional development and a source of unrivalled personal satisfaction. Responsibility for continued growth rests with individual teachers. Although others including colleagues, supervisors, and administrators may offer valuable stimulation and assistance, teachers must engage in self-assessment and evaluation if meaningful professional growth is to take place. NFPT: Successful Programs Are For Life Diets teach us that changing our exercise and eating habits are shortterm projects Goalsetting is a great way to stay motivated and achieve the results you http://www.nfpt.com/Library/Articles/successful4life.htm
Extractions: by Chad Tackett, President of GHF Living a low-fat lifestyle and decreasing your body fat takes a long-term commitment. Trying to do it all at once, however, only makes you frustrated and discouraged. Instead, set a realistic long-term goal; then achieve it by reaching smaller, short-term goals. For example, if your goal is to decrease your body fat by 10 percent, shoot for modest goals, such as decreasing your body fat by one percent each month. Decreasing body fat slowly is not only the safest and most effective way, it is also the most realistic. Every goal, short-term or long-term, should be one that is truly attainable. Every goal should also be one that you are in charge of. Setting a short-term goal where you are in charge, such as exercising four times a week, will help you achieve your long-term goal. Rememberand remind yourself: each time you reach a short-term goal, you are one step closer to achieving what you really want: a healthier, more attractive body. Setting small goals and acknowledging all the small achievements on your path are essential to successful change. Remember, successful programs are for lifetake it one day at a time. Good luck: I hope you enjoy all the many great benefits of a successful weight management program.
