Extractions: Some historians believe that Kolven from Holland and Chole from Belgium influenced the game. The latter was introduced into Scotland in 1421. However while these games and countless others are stick and ball games, they are missing that vital ingredient that is unique to golf - the hole. Whatever the argument, there can be no dispute that Scotland gave birth to the game we know as golf today. During the mid-15th century, Scotland was preparing to defend itself against an English invasion. The population's enthusiastic pursuit of golf and soccer to the neglect of military training (archery primarily) caused the Scottish parliament of King James II to ban both sports in 1457. The ban was reaffirmed in 1470 and 1491 although people largely ignored it. Only in 1502 with the Treaty of Glasgow was the ban lifted with King James IV (James 1 of England) himself taking up the sport. Golf's status and popularity quickly spread throughout the 16th century due to it's royal endorsement. King Charles I popularised the game in England and Mary Queen of Scots, who was French, introduced the game to France while she studied there. Indeed the term 'caddie stems from the name given to her helpers who were the French Military, known in french as cadets.

Different hypothesis are in opposition and all have pros and cons supported by distinguished historians. We just limit here to give our preference to the "jeu de mail" - but may be the "chole" was already a forerunner - see below for authorised sources. The "jeu de mail" (aka pall-mall game). Played in France since the 16th century, the "jeu de mail" shows many similarities with the game of golf, especially regarding rules and attitudes. It's for this game we know the earliest printed rules : Lauthier 1717 (from which these two engravings were extracted). Different variants exist. The one which looks like very closely to the game of golf was called "mail a la chicane" and was played in the open country. This game lasted in the south of France (in the neighbourhood of Aix and Montpellier) until the early 20th century.

The very first Open Tournament was held in 1860. Prestwick Golf Club was the venue and a field of eight professional golfers from clubs around Scotland played three rounds over the 12-hole course to determine the champion.

One of the problems I've faced has been restoring clubs that have been neglected for decades. The question you have to answer is, how far do you go in restoring an antique golf club? To clarify my own thinking, I wrote this piece Since I posted the previous article, I've been asked by several readers about how to value old golf clubs. It's not an easy job and there are few real experts, but I've put together some information that might be useful. Golf has been played in Australia since the 1830s, but the first golf professional and club maker recorded here was Richard Taylor in 1891. So clubs with Australian markings date from that year. Living in Australia, I've come across many hickory shaft golf clubs associated with the early Australian golf professionals. Many clubs have the professional's name impressed on their head or shaft. This gives us a way of dating the club, provided we know something about the man. It turns out to be quite a difficult job. Working with collector and dealer Leon Rowbell in Melbourne, I've put together a

Originally the game of "gowf", as it was called by the Scots (the English referred to it as "goff", the Dutch, "koff"), was forbidden on Sundays by Act of Parliament, nevertheless, golf continued to flourish at an astonishing rate. The game was born on the linksland of Scotland's east coast, the Kingdom of Fife, and five hundred years later is still going strong. Through the passage of time there have been countless names etched into the fascinating history of the game, yet none more prominent than the men who designed the world's greatest golf courses, such as James Braid, Donald Ross, Old Tom Morris and Dr Alistair MacKenzie. Before they turned to design and construction some of them were the leading golfers of their time (mainly Braid and Morris), yet many golf historians believe they left a more distinctive mark in golf courtesy of the land they touched, as opposed to the silverware.

Extractions: Golf, as we know it, was first played with a leather-covered ball stuffed with goose or chicken feathers. Several pieces of stout leather were tightly stitched, leaving a small opening. The casing was turned inside out. Feathers - a "gentlemans top hat full" by measure - that had been boiled and softened, were tediously stuffed into the casing before the final stitches were made. The surprisingly hard feather ball was hammered into roundness and finally coated with several layers of "paint". Because of the difficulty and time involved in making Featheries, they were relatively expensive. This fragile missile was used for almost four centuries. The first "Gutta" ball is believed to have been made in 1848 by the Rev. Dr. Robert Adams Paterson from gutta-percha packing material. Gutta-percha is the evaporated milky juice or latex produced from a tree most commonly found in Malaysia. It is hard and non-brittle and becomes soft and impressible at the temperature of boiling water. Gutta balls, were handmade by rolling the softened material on a board. The new durability of the Gutta, together with its much lower cost, resistance to water, and improved run, provided rejuvenation to the game of golf. Not without some resistance from traditionalists, the Gutta gradually replaced the Feathery.

Extractions: Miniature Golf History After the stock market crash of 1929, regulation minigolf links became too expensive for most people to afford. In spite of this, the desire to play this most popular game continued to flourish. The ingenuity of the players during this depressed period of American History spawned what became known as "Rinkiedink" golf. Undaunted by convention, enthusiastic players would use any space available to set up these unique and crazy courses. Due to the need for lights at night, many of these courses were built under a brilliantly illuminated billboard sign with the playing surface made of a clay or hard sand surface. There was even a green dye called "Grassit" which was used to color the ground to look like grass. In all 1930's there was an estimated 50,000 miniature golf courses representing an investment of $325,000,000. An estimated four million Americans were playing miniature golf. In fact, Wanamaker's department store featured Tom Thumb Fashions which stated, "When you're Lilli-putting on the Miniature Golf Course ... remember your Clothes Technique!" Tom Thumb jackets with berets sold for $19.50 and were sold out to addicts of the Miniature Golf Craze. In 1955, Lomma Enterprises, Inc., founded by Al Lomma and today still run by his brother Ralph Lomma, led the revival of wacky, animated, trick hazards intended to be more challenging than straight putting. These hazards required both accurately aimed shots and split-second timing to avoid spinning windmill blades, revolving statuary and other careening obstacles.
