Extractions: Scab Disease Damages Small-Grain Crops Item #d99may54 A May 4, 1999, press release from the American Phytopathological Society says that grain farmers in the Red River Valley of North Dakota, Minnesota, and Manitoba have experienced six successive years of crop damage from Fusarium head blight, more commonly known as scab. Additional outbreaks have occurred in Midwestern and Eastern states of the United States. This fungus shrivels the kernels of wheat, rye, and barley, significantly reducing yields. Moisture at the time of flowering is the main stimulus necessary for scab. A succession of wet years beginning in 1993 are linked to the current scab epidemic. From 1991 to 1997, American farmers lost 470 million bushels of wheat, worth $2.6 billion, because of the scab epidemic. Breeding for disease resistance is underway worldwide and soon new cultivars with increased resistance to scab and developed by conventional breeding methods will be available. Extractions: by Arnold Larsen It is now documented that several farmers had suffered crop failures by planting seed lots that were dormant but not reported as such on the seed label. The problem arises when seed dealers and sales people are reluctant to sell seed with a label that includes a dormancy percentage in the viability statement. Many seed analysts also prefer reporting all viability in terms of germination in response to the pressures from the seed industry and the extra labor involved in making this determination. When all the viable seeds do not germinate by prescribed AOSA pprocedures, the remaining seeds not germinated are to be tested for viability by the tetrazolium test or other means. Those testing positive for viability are to be reported as "dormant." Then the total viability is the sum of the germination and dormant percentages. To reduce analytical time and to meet with the approval of the seed marketing people, seed analysts will perform extensive research in an effort to find a procedure that will make all viable seeds germinate regardless of the depth of dormancy they may possess. When they discover such a procedure, they present a rule proposal to the AOSA membership requesting a rule change which inserts the new procedure. Quite often these are accepted and seeds of the crop kind in question will no longer have dormant seed reported regardless of how deep the dormancy is. Extractions: Methods for Detecting GMOs in Grain Crops September 20, 2001 8(25):161-164 Joe Lauer, Corn Agronomist The following is an edited excerpt from a review on detecting transgenic genes in crop plants written by Dr. Peter Thomison at Ohio State University. There are also other circumstances when GMO testing may be useful in crop production, such as when troubleshooting crop disorders during the growing season. If an allegedly herbicide resistant corn or soybean field exhibits extensive injury following herbicide application, the grower may want to confirm that plants in the field are actually herbicide resistant. Similarly a grower, if uncertain, may need to determine what fields, or what parts of fields, he planted to GMO crops. There are several commonly used GMO testing protocols, including biological tests, as well as ELISA and PCR tests, for herbicide and insect tolerance. Growers and end users should consider the advantages and disadvantages of the various testing methods before harvest. Exporters should probably resign themselves to the most rigorous testing protocol to anticipate the additional scrutiny their products will receive overseas. Some major end-users, i.e. large food processors, are currently using a combination of tests for identity-preserved (IP) grains. Herbicide bioassays ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) tests The PCR (polymerase chain reaction) method is more sensitive than the ELISA method and tests for the presence of the specific DNA sequence of the gene itself. The major advantage of PCR tests is sensitivity, i.e. detection of GMOs at very low levels. PCR is the only one of these methods that can effectively detect GMOs in processed foods. Major disadvantages of the PCR protocol include length of time needed (2-3 days), and cost ($75-$300 per sample). PCR tests also require more sophisticated equipment and greater expertise. While more sensitive to GMOs, PCRs in some cases tend to show false positives. PCR procedures were originally developed as research tools for analyzing genes and assisting in the movement of genes among organisms. Given the expense, time, and expertise required, PCR testing has limited potential in the field or at grain elevators.

Fall armyworms pose a monstrous threat to Texas pastures and grain crops each year, but entomologists say this year's conditions may be especially favorable for the ravenous larvae. Fall armyworms can cause serious damage in one to two days before the damage is even noticed. The larvae attack small grains in large numbers and devour all plant material in their path. Texas Agricultural Extension entomologist Clifford Hoelscher says early detection and preventative measures are essential for successful small grains crops this season.
