    Extractions: In prearchaic Greece dreams are associated with religious cults directly connected with the worship of the Great Mother Goddess Earth (Gaia). In these early communities dream experiences belong to the capacity of man to communicate with the hyberbatic and the holy. Nocturnal life is not distinguished from daily experience and dreams are considered a transitional state to altered realities belonging to the kingdom of spirits. Before the arrival of the Olympian deities, big cult centers as those of Dodona and Delphi are related with the adoration of the Earth and dreams play a central role in the functioning of religious proceedings. They are used as a path for the revelation of mysteries and the communication with the world of the dead. Incubation (ritual dreaming of healing dreams) is commonly employed as a way to contact the primordial elements of the Earth. Plato was not systematically involved with dreaming although in many cases it is evident that he attributed great significance to it. Since there is not a detailed essay on dreams in his work, we have to abstract his general theory by studying separate pieces of information scattered around his literary work.

The objects, on sale as a lot at the gallery for $1.5 million, include necklaces with lilies, large cusped rosettes from a belt, huge decorated gold rings, sealstones and other stylized jewelry and ornaments. This large gold ring showing two female figures in flounced skirts is among the rare Mycenaean gold jewelery and ornaments from the 15th century B.C. that Greece wants returned from a Manhattan gallery. (Schecter Lee/Michael Ward Gallery) In a suit filed on Monday in Federal District Court in Manhattan, lawyers for Greece contend that the objects were taken in violation of Greek law from one of 18 recently discovered tombs at Aidonia, northeast of Mycenae. They say that the similarity between these objects and others found by Greek Government archeologists at the tombs beginning in 1978 mark them as coming from the same site. The case is unusual not only because of the extreme rarity of the objects but also because Michael Ward, the owner of the gallery, is one of the most prominent dealers in antiquities and serves as a member of the Presidentially appointed Cultural Property Advisory Committee, which authorizes assistance for foreign countries that are losing cultural treasures to looters and the illegal art market.

It is, quite simply, the most inspirational and fascinating book regarding the Maya that I have ever read. Other more "modern" books have more accurate data and interpretations of the glyphs and symbols found at the sites, and other publications have color photos of the sites involved with the buildings restored. But iimagine the feeling of being the first man in several hundred years to see these buildings and glyphs and have no idea where they originated. Modern day explorers use airplanes and four-wheel-drive vehicles on established roads to get to these cities. The explorers in this book arrived after a month at sea, and could only reach the sites (who's locations were only rumored at in the first place) by having men hack their way through the Jungles of Central America with machetes. They had to content with heat stroke, mosquitos and parasites such as Niguas ( Tropical Fleas This book was written by an already accomplished writer.     Extractions: CLASS GOALS: English 188 and 198, "Travelers in Greece: The History, Archeology, Literature, and Cultural Identity of Greece" will give American students the opportunity to study Greece's cultural identity and history in the 20th century through selected writings of well-known British and American authors as well as through the works of major Greek authors (in translation). The objects of the course are twofold: a) to familiarize American students with Greece's culture and history through the eyes of major literary travelers and writers; and b) to allow the students the opportunity to write about their own impressions and experiences as traveling scholars. ASSIGNMENTS/GRADING: ENL 188 will be taken for a letter grade. Evaluation will be based on four short assignments (400-500 words; each assignment is worth 15%), participation in class (20%), and a final examination (20%). All assignments, except the last one, will be due on the Monday of each week. The final will be given at the last day of the course. Assignments will be distributed to the students at the beginning of the course; there will be plenty of time to discuss them during class time. Papers can be typed or written in longhand.
