    Extractions: The geography of Greece is quite unique. This is because it is one of the smaller countries in the northern hemisphere and is surrounded by bunches of large and small islands. Hopefully as you read this report you will learn more about the climate and location of Greece, Greece's geographical features, the movement of people during the course of the cultures history, and environmental shaping of the culture. The climate of Greece is very hot and dry in the summers, with clear, cloudless skies. The winters are mild with very few rain, and the temperature rarely drops below zero degrees. The lowlands rarely ever get snow or frost, but in the mountains it's a different story. In the summer it is constantly raining and mild in the mountains and in the winter they are covered with snow. Rainfall varies from reigon to reigon. Thessaly gets about 1.5 inches of rain per year, some parts of the northern coast can get up to 50 inches of rain per year, and Portland, OR rainfall is 33.94 inches of rain per year. Mt. Olympus -Mt. Olympus is located in northern Greece,on the boundry between Thessaly and Macadonia near the Aegean Sea. it is 9570 feet tall and is the highest point in Greece. It is about the same size as Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, combined. Greece as a region has very poor land. Limestone absorbs rainfall and will not hold topsoil. Less than one third of the country can be cultivated. Grain, wine, and oil (olive) were the main products. The rest of Greece is covered with scrub vegetation. The main meal of most early Greeks was porridge. The country was fit for little more than goat and sheep raising. Herodotus said that “Hellas and Poverty have always been foster-sisters. Poor vegetation, lack of natural resources, a harsh geography and the difficulty of overland communication combined to make the growth of large states difficult. The Saronic and Corinthian Gulfs almost cut Greece in half. Areas such as The Isthmus of Corinth were strategic-where land and sea routes meet. It is said that though the land divided the Greeks, the sea united them. Most settlements were on the coastline, not unlike our own Maritimes.

Most early civlizations developed near a good source of water. Greece is no exception; people settled in small, independent communities along or near the coasts of the mainland and the islands. The land was mountainous and received limited rainfall, but the sea provided lots of resources for the ancient Greeks. One of the earliest civilizations was centered around the island of Crete . Later, several cities in the Peloponnesus gained power this civilization was called Mycenean . Around 800 BC small farming communities became organized into larger city-states, called a "polis." As their population grew, the Greeks established colonies around the Mediterranean, from southern Italy to the Black Sea.
