Extractions: The Regions in Brief Athens Central Greece Crete The Cyclades ... Western Greece Greece is a land of sea and mountains. Over a fifth of the Greek land mass is comprised of islands, numbering several thousand if you count every floating cragand nowhere in Greece will you find yourself more than 96 kilometers (60 miles) from the sea. It should come as no surprise that the sea molds the Greek imagination, as well as its history. Mainland Greece, meanwhile, is a great vertebrate, with the Pindos range reaching from north to south, and continuing, like a tail, through the Peloponnese. The highest of its peaks is Mount Olympus, the seat of the gods, nearly 10,000 feet above sea level. Eighty percent of the Greek mainland is mountainous, which you will rapidly discover whether you make your way on foot or on wheels. Source: Frommer's Greece, 3rd Edition

Western Greece Whether by ferry or hydrofoil, the Sporades, strewn north and east of the island of Evvia (Euboea), are readily accessible from the mainland and offer verdant forest landscapes, golden-sand beaches, and crystalline waters. That's the good news. The bad news is that they are no secret. Skiathos is the most in demand with all that that implies. Skopelos, whose lovely port is one of the most striking in Greece, is more rugged and remote than Skiathos, with more trails and fewer nightclubs. Relatively far-off Skyros is well worth a visit, offering underwater fishing and diving, sandy beaches, and luminously clear waters. On top of that, it's almost a secret and, for the time being, a bargain.

Some might even feel they show almost too much, leaving less to discover at the site...did you need to know the floor covering before your visit? But the usefulness of these guides in planning, for example, an on-the-run visit to a museum just before closing time will make up for any lost surprises. And, believe me, the real 3-D Greece will have more than enough pleasant discoveries that can't be put in any guidebook. The Eyewitness Guides also include functional maps of major cities, and the Athens one is complete with a street index. This feature is omitted in other guidebooks, and greatly improves the usefulness of this guide.
Extractions: Around the same time as Egypt was established the area around the Aegean Sea was populated by agricultural people. Phoenician Sailors probably brought the vines to Greece. This was the beginning for Greece's development as the first great wine country in history. Greek wines were exported all the way to Gallia. The Greeks taught the Romans everything about growing wine and they then wrote their knowledge down The poor soils of Greece's peninsulas are ideal for viniculture. The extreme coastal climate makes sure the vineyards stay the right temperature. The winters are mild, frost is only seldomely a threat. The grounds are as variable as the climate. On the mainland there is mostly limestone, on the islands volcanic rock. The vineyards were established on the flat coastal stretches, in river valleys and the mountain slopes. Greece's historic wines were known for their sweetness, which was probably reached by the same production method that today's Commandaria or the strawwines are made with. Today the Retsina, a white wine spiced with the sap of pine trees is a synonym for Greek wines. But all other types of wine are made as well. In the country's north full red wines dominate, while fruity white wines are made on the islands.

But lost in the commotion over Mykonos Santorini Rhodes and Corfu is the fact that some of the most beautiful and interesting places in Greece are not on the islands, but on the mainland in places like the Peloponnese The Peloponnese , or Peleponisos , or Peloponessos or however you want to spell it, is what many people think of as the real Greece. Beautiful beaches, majestic mountains, unparalleled natural beauty and a history as long as civilization. Name the first Capital of modern Greece. Give up? It wasn't Athens or Thessaloniki . It was Nafplio At the time, the Peloponnesse was all there was of Greece, after it was liberated from the Turks in 1821. It nearly went back to the Turks when the heroes of the revolution began fighting amongst themselves. But such is life in Greece. For many, the Peloponessos is the true Greece - and to them the narrow isthmus of Corinth is all that separates them from a world of Albanians, Vlachs, Bulgarians and Macedonians, who are all Greeks to us.

Greek Folk Music And Dance - Instrumentation Styles The klarino is the Greek clarinet, and it is the most popular leadmelody instrument in the mainland regions of greece. It is an http://members.aol.com/oarkas/instrumentation.html
Extractions: Greek Folk Instrumentation Styles Klarino, Violi, and Lavouto Karamoudza and Daouli Bouzouki and Baglamas In each folkloric area of Greece the musicians play different folk instruments. Some instruments are found in many areas, while some are only found in a few regions. The typical folk orchestra of the mainland includes the klarino (Greek Albert system clarinet), the violi (violin), the lavouto (Greek lute), the defi (Greek hand drum like the tambourine), and sometimes the sandouri (a Greek hammered dulcimer). The typical island folk orchestra usually includes the violi and the lavouto, and sometimes the santouri. In Thrace and some of the Aegean islands they often include the toumbeleki, a hand drum. In traditional Greek folk music the musicians do not play harmony but instead use heterophony. Each musician plays the melody in a different way (improvising decorations and embellishments). Sometimes at the end of a song, the lead musician will play improvisations (taximia) in the mode of the song, and this excites the dancers to new heights.
Greek Folk Costume For example, the costumes of the mainland and of the islands are different. costumesworn by the Greeks of the islands and in fact of all regions of greece. http://members.aol.com/oarkas/greekcostume.html
Extractions: Drawing by Pavla Pappayiorga; Greece, 1971 The costumes of Greece are a beautiful part of a very rich cultural history. This is just a brief overview of the subject and will include only a few representative examples of some of the costumes that were worn traditionally by the Greek people. Some of the characteristics of Greek folk costumes can be traced back to elements in ancient Hellenic and Byzantine costumes. In fact, many of the elements of the liturgical clothing worn today by the Greek Orthodox priests are related to the modern Greek folk costumes and have their origin in the clothing of the Byzantine Empire. One generalization about the Women's costumes concerns the main parts of their traditional dress. Most of the mainland costumes in particular feature a cotten chemise (poukamiso) as the basic garment. On the body, over the chemise, there is a sleeveless vest which is usually made of wool. These may be short or long. Sometimes they are of homespun wool, but in some areas they are made from finer factory woven wools. They are sometimes black, sometimes white. Sometimes in urban areas, they are made from velvet. Other important elements of the women's costumes are various types of aprons, sashes, and head coverings. The head coverings are usually large scarves of various materials and colors. They are often decorated with block printing or embroidery. Materials and colors often vary, as do the local names of all of these costume elements these parts:

Touring Areas In Greece probably most cyclists will merely pass through it on their way to other regions. Thisis the hottest part of mainland greece and is flat and often windswept http://homepage.ntlworld.com/anthony.campbell1/cycling/greece/regions.html
Extractions: HOME BACK GENERAL WILDLIFE In this section I provide some information about the main cycle touring areas in Greece. Note that I'm a member of Cycloclimbing OCD and the notes provided here reflect this, being biased towards mountain cycling. However, most of Greece is mountainous, so this is fairly appropriate. I don't try to cover all the areas in detail, but if you want further information about anywhere in particular email me and I'll help if I can: substitute "ac"@ for "www." in my website address. This is the area round Athens and probably most cyclists will merely pass through it on their way to other regions. However, there is at least one impressive mountain area which is worth visiting; this is the Parnitha region north of Athens. (See my Greek pictures for a sample.) Mt Parnitha itself is at 1413m, but the actual summit is closed because of the radar station. However, there is a pass nearby which is at 1260 m. The approach through the outlying suburbs is dreary but once you leave Athens the road becomes empty on weekdays and views are rewarding. The best way of going is via Varibobi (Varibombi) and Thrakomakedones; then there are numerous hairpins as the road goes up the mountainside. The gradient on the climb is about 8% most of the way. There is a hotel on top and a cafe but the general atmosphere is rural, and it is possible to make a pleasant circuit of the mountain top. Parnitha is part of a larger mountainous area and rough roads lead away down gorges from close to the summit. Another climb in the same mountain chain, a little to the west of Parnitha, goes via the village of Fili to Stefani and upwards to a quiet pass at about 500m. The road ends here despite what most maps say but it is possible to continue on roughstuff paths; eventually you reach quite reasonable unsurfaced roads and this affords an alternative route to Thebes cutting out some fairly dull country to the E.

Nearly two thousand years of foreign occupation took a toll on her fortunes, yet many of Greece's rich viticultural resources remain intact. During the last forty years the wine industry has struggled to regain its name. Now, armed with an ocean of indigenous cultivars, a superior climate for grape growing, and an abundance of brainpower and technological resources, Greece has developed one of the most exciting wine industries in the world.
