This is manifested in one review paper that will be published this year in the journal BioScience and in two books that are nearing completion. The first book, entitled The Geography of Climate and Vegetation , examines the relationships between climate and vegetation on different time and space scales starting from the micro-scale and working up to the global scale. Extractions: The Arctic Research Group at the Institute of Geography, University of Copenhagen, has since 1992 been responsible for a research programme in Greenland, at the Arctic Station (Disko Island, central W Greenland), at the Sermilik Station (Ammassalik Island, SE Greenland), and at the Zackenberg Research Station (NE Greenland) respectively. The research programme has been funded by SNF with 1,075,000 dk.kr during the three-year period 1993-95. Earlier, during 1990-1992, the group obtained SNF-funding to a preceding project at the Sermilik Station. In 1995 the group has received a major additional funding (8,000,000 dk.kr) from SNF, in co-operation with the Department of Plant Ecology, University of Copenhagen. This research scheme will run to the end of 1997. During the above project periods, scientists from University of Aarhus (DK), University of Exeter (UK), Univ. of Toronto (CAN), Queens Univ. (CAN), University of Regina (CAN) and Freie Universität Berlin (BRD) have participated in the work. During the project periods, members of the research group have received additional funding from SNF and the Swedish Natural Science Research Council (NFR), for research in NE Greenland, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden and in the Antarctic.

Gletscheren ligger på Disko og er en udløbsgletscher fra Storbræen, Sermersuaq, der dækker et område på 908 km i den østlige del af Disko. Selve udløbsgletscheren dækker et område på ca. 100 km bestemt ud fra studier af flyfotografier fra området optaget i 1964 og 1985. Gletscherfremstødet (glacier surge) blev observeret af undertegnede m.fl. i juli 1999 og hører formentlig til blandt de størst registrerede, hvad angår landbaserede gletschere. Undersøgelserne omfatter registreringer og studier af 1) Gletscheren, dens morfologi, dimensioner og øjeblikkelige aktivitet samt dens geomorfologiske effekt lateralt og ved terminus. Foruden fotografisk dokumentation og målinger af vand- og sedimentføring ved fronten af gletscheren er der etableret en automatisk klimastation og et digitalt kamera (ugentlige optagelser) ved gletscherfronten.

Extractions: Photo The Faroes are located in the Atlantic Ocean, almost midway between Norway, Iceland and Scotland and consist of 18 islands separated by narrow sounds and fiords. The nearest land is the Shetland Isles to the southeast at a distance of 162 nautical miles (300 km). The Faroes are part of the kingdom of Denmark. The islands were a Danish county until 1948, but have since then been self-governing as laid down in the Home Rule Act. Defence matters and foreign policy do not come under the Home Rule, but the Faroese authorities do conduct negotiations regarding fishing rights with other countries, both with and without the participation of the Danish Foreign Office. The population of the Faroes tripled during the course of the 19th century, and again during the 20th century. At the end of 1989, the population had reached a high of 47,838. The limited information available from previous centuries indicates that the population previously stood at around 4000. The strong growth in the population over the last two centuries is mainly due to the fact that society has ceased to rely on one natural resource, the land, and begun to rely on another, namely the sea. This switch in resources led to new production methods, changes in the infrastructure, new patterns of settlement and new cultural features. Fisheries and the fishing industry are the main trades, and almost all other industries stem directly from these activities. Shipyards and the production of fishing tackle are the main secondary trades, although attempts have been made to establish other small industries. The limited home market, the distance to the mainland and the relationship with the EU all hinder development. The agricultural sector, in which lamb and milk are the chief products, today has only a marginal economic position.

Its economy is closely tied to fluctuations in the fishing industry and price developments on the global market. It also still has close cultural, political, social and economic ties with Denmark in the form of annual subsidies of over DKK 2,500m and the free provision of education, hospital and other services to Greenlandic citizens. The first people migrated to Greenland across the Davis Strait from the American continent more than 4,000 years ago. The first links with Europe were established with the Norse settlements in 985 AD and lasted until the mid 15th century. The flourishing European whaling industry in the 16th century restored regular visits to Greenland, but a permanent link was not established until the settlement of the Danish-Norwegian priest Hans Egede in 1721. This formed the basis of Danish sovereignty for the next 258 years, where the establishment of the trade monopoly the Royal Greenland Trade Department, the KGH ( ), was particularly significant.

Extractions: Why Green land? It is not fully clear why Greenland is called that way; Iceland would have been a more suitable name for it. Maybe it is due to the fact that during the 8th century some exiles from Iceland went to an at that time unknown country with a harsh climate. But to make the officials in Iceland more or less jealous they said they lived in a wonderful green country. Others say that Erik the Red, who went there from Iceland around 980 (in exile after being accused of murder), called it Greenland to attract new inhabitants. Maybe it is true. There is also an other, more scientifical, explanation. It is true that before the year 1500 there was a milder climate in Greenland, in almost the whole northern hemisphere. So Greenland could have been more greener than it is today. After 1500 till 1800 there has been the called Short Ice-age. Temperatures dropped heavily, especially in Greenland; it dropped so low, that inhabitants from abroad, Normans, starved to death. The third explanation is simple. The most southern part is in fact very green, you will find sheepfarms and a lot of green grass. It is not that strange, knowing that the southern tip lies at the same geographical height as Oslo (Norway) and St. Petersburg (Russia)
