    Extractions: Guinea-Bissau Culture The Bissau carnival is a feast of carved masks and coloured costumes, but during the rest of the year these are not prevalent on the mainland. The traditions are instead kept alive by the Bjango people on the islands. Seated statues of the spirit Iran, complete with jaunty top hat, witness agricultural and initiation rituals. Masks representing sharks, sawfish, hippos and bulls with real horns (the Dugn'be) are used. The hippo mask is so big, it has carved legs to hold it up. Traditional dance and music are heavily influenced by neighbouring Senegal and Gambia. Women move frenetically to the sound of the harp-like kora and the xylophone-like balafon . Modern music mixes these roots with a Latin twist from its Portuguese heritage, and salsa is a big thing. About 40% of Guinea-Bissau's people (mainly Fula and Mandinka) are Muslims; they are concentrated more upcountry than along the coast. Except for a few Christians in the towns, the rest follow traditional beliefs. The official language of Guinea-Bissau is Portuguese but Crioulo, a hybrid of medieval Portuguese and local words, is more commonly spoken. French is understood in the more touristy areas.

This party flag is particlarly important because it gave birth to not one but two national flags: that of Guinea-Bissau and the old national flag of Cape Verde. The Cape-Verdian party PAICV, that nowdays has a different flag, used also a flag in these lines. The reason for this is that Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde constituted a short-lived confederacy after independence under the leadership of the PAIGC, a party that had cape-verdian and guinean membership and was winning the war against the portuguese colonial forces in Guinea-Bissau by the time of the portuguese revolution. The union broke apart because there were conflicts between the cape-verdians (with a much more european culture - Cape Verde is basically a mixed country, racially, culturally, linguistically, etc.) and the guineans (who in the vast majority didn't speak portuguese) inside the party, that immediately were reflected at state level. The symbols, however, remained very close until the democratization of Cape Verde and the consequent change of national symbols in this country. The symbolism of this flag is just like that of the national flag and inherited from the symbolism of Ghana, from which it comes: an arrangement of the pan-african colours with the black star of Africa added. The image at FOTW, by the way, is incorrect: it's proportions should be, as in this party flag, 1:2.

For purposes of analysis we can divide the book into two major sections: (1) reflections by Freire, intended for the reader of the book, and (2) the text of some letters written by Paulo Freire to Mario Cabral, State Commissioner of Education and Culture in Guinea-Bissau, and to the team that within Guinea-Bissau was trying to use Freire's ideas and procedures to develop a national literacy campaign. The letters themselves comprise approximately 45 percent of the book (certainly less than half of it, at least in its Spanish version, which is the one I have used). What is written directly for the reader is intended by Freire to be a "letter-report, a letter as informal as the rest of the letters which integrate the book." Freire does not seem to realize that the letter he addresses to the readers comprises the largest portion of the book itself. In truth, experiences are not transplanted; instead they are re-invented.

The area was visited in 1446 by Nuno Tristão, a Portuguese slave trader, and became an important slave center. A Portuguese post was established at Bissau in 1687, but the Portuguese claim was disputed by the French and the British, and in 1792 the latter briefly had a settlement at Bolama. In 1879 the region was constituted a Portuguese colony, and border disputes with the French were settled by treaty in 1886. Not until 1915, however, were the Portuguese able to exercise effective control over the country. For more than a thousand years the coast of Guinea-Bissau has been occupied by iron-using agriculturists. They were particularly skilled in the production of irrigated and dry rice and were suppliers of marine salt to adjacent areas of the western Sudan. From the 13th century coastal farmers came increasingly into contact with the outside world, first from the landward side and later from the seaward portion. The earliest recorded influences are associated with the dissolution of the Ghana empire when displaced peoples sought refuge near the coast. Later the region was loosely drawn into the sphere of the Mali empire, and regional governors called farims were appointed to impose some form of allegiance to the great Mande ruler.
