    Extractions: History: New Guinea has been inhabited by various peoples from throughout Asia for some 10,000 years. Its recorded history began with the visits of Portuguese explorers in the early 16th century, followed by Dutch traders. The Dutch East India Company took control of the western half of the island, which became a colonial possession attached to the Dutch East Indies in 1828. The territory was then split between the British and Germans in the 1880s, until after World War I, when it was transferred in its entirety to the control of Australia, endorsed by a United Nations mandate. Most of it was occupied by the Japanese during World War II.

Search the site On January 27, 1965, the Foundation for the Peoples of the South Pacific (FSP) was formally incorporated as a tax-exempt, non-profit, non-partisan, non-sectarian voluntary international organization. Dedicated to the rehabilitation, welfare and growth of the Pacific islands following the devastation of World War II, FSP honed a unique approach to development. Unlike many large international agencies and donor governments, which sent in teams of overseas experts to run programs, FSP focused on building the institutions of a society that could help itself. When FSP began its work in the Pacific Islands in 1963, almost all of the islands were colonial societies with powerful colonial officers running the civil service, education, health and other national structures. FSP became the principal secular non-governmental organization (NGO) to assist islanders during their transition to independence and sovereignty. When the New Hebrides became independent as Vanuatu in 1980, for example, its first Prime Minister and its first Foreign Minister were graduates of FSP programs. FSP was the also the only NGO to work with all of the churches in a region where ninety-five per cent of the people are Christian. In 1967 FSP published a nine volume socio-economic survey on the Pacific Islands, and in 1968 its office in Sydney, Australia was established to coordinate programs in the Pacific region. This office grew into the first FSP developed nation independent affiliate and is today known as

    Extractions: University of Virginia South Asianists had earlier achieved a considerable degree of organization in the region, largely through the outreach activities of the National Defense Education Act Title VI center at the University of Virginia, led by historian Professor Walter Hauser. There was also a Southern Atlantic States Association for Asian and African Studies (SASAAAS), oriented more toward teaching and public outreach than the SSRC Seminar program, but nonetheless illustrative of the possibilities of a regional organization in the enthusiastic participation it enjoyed. There was also interest in forming a less structured Southern Association of Africanists in the region, led by Ann Dunbar and others in central North Carolina, and focused on teaching outreach. Ann Dunbar organized the last meeting of the Seminar's first year at the University of North Carolina on April 20, 1974, focused on discussion of Rodney's How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, with copies provided to all members. Akpan (South Carolina State College) and Nyang presented papers, with comments by Sagay and Thornton. (See report to SSRC, Appendix IId.) Expenses totaled $308.99. On the strength of the benefits that all participants felt they had gained from the Seminar's first year, and indications of continued sponsorship from several institutions in the region, the group resolved to apply for an extension of the Seminar's SSRC funding. All the papers from the year were filed with the Library of Congress through the chief its Exchange and Grant Division (Nathan R. Einhorn).

M'basogo's dictatorial style of governance hasn't changed appreciably since then. This year, M'basogo allowed foreign journalists to cover a trial that offered a rare and uncomfortable window into the country's history of rule by iron fist. He may have believed this openness could help restore the international credibility and foreign aid the country lost in 1993 after he brutally cracked down on his political opposition. The result was apparently not what authorities had expected. On May 31, eight foreign correspondents covering the trial of 117 citizens from the Bubi ethnic group were expelled from the country because authorities viewed their reports of irregularities in the proceedings and signs that the defendants had been tortured as "tendentious." The Bubi defendants are accused of secession for attacking government forces in January on Bioka, the oil-rich but impoverished island that they inhabit. For the foreseeable future, local journalists will continue to practice self-censorship in an environment rigidly intolerant of critical viewpoints, where the media are tightly controlled by the state. Two major sets of models were generated to explain these results. Both involved the notion of gradients. Here we have to digress briefly to discuss the concept of gradients in embryology. Until they were resurrected in the laboratory of Christiane NŸsslein-Volhard, "gradients" had been a "dirty word" for decades (4). There are several reasons for this, one of which was that they were ridiculed by a person who had been one of the leading investigators of such gradients, Thomas Hunt Morgan (5). The introduction of gradients into embryology is often credited to Boveri (6), who did introduce the term " GefŠlle " (gradient) into his work. However, as Sander (7) has made explicit, Boveri's concept of a gradient is not the one that we have today. His is more like a step-gradient, wherein the cell membrane separating two cells also separates two concentrations of the same substance. His illustrations, however, show a graded character from the vegetal to the animal pole, and this makes it appear that there are threshold-related gradients in these embryos.     Extractions: Here we refer to aspects of the recent history of Indonesia that we believe more important to the understanding of the Indonesian occupation of East Timor. Since the Japanese occupation, which gave birth to the Indonesian military forces that would fight for the independence, through with the presidency of Sukarno and of his substitute after the coup of 1965: Raden Suharto. These are reminiscences of the Indian colonization that would be interrupted with the penetration of Islam in the 16th century, generally superficial and incomplete. Due to the insular configuration, composed by 13 677 islands, 3 000 inhabited, and with an approximate extension of 1/8 the perimeter of Earth, Indonesia faces problems of national unity. Being the fifth most populous nation, 2/3 are concentrated in only the fifth larger island, Java, where the density is one of the highest. The solution passes inevitably by birth control and transmigration to territories such as Papua New Guinea, recently East Timor but also in between with the evident purpose of dissolving local cultures in the predominant Javanese which is only one amongst 360 tribal and ethno-linguistic groups and more than 250 different languages and dialects.
