European settlement didn't occur until 1615, when the Dutch West Indian Company erected a fort and depot on the lower Essequibo River. The Dutch traded with the Indian peoples of the interior, and established riverside plantations - worked by African slaves - and sugar quickly became the dominant crop. While the coast remained firmly under Dutch control, the English were busy establishing sugar and tobacco plantations west of the Suriname River. Conflict between the two countries meant parts of the region changed hands a number of times, but by 1796 Britain had become the major power. In 1834, slavery was abolished forcing many plantations to close or look for another source of labor. The British solved the problem by shipping indentured workers from India. From 1846-1917, almost 250,000 laborers entered Guyana, dramatically transforming the country's demographic balance and laying the basis for persistent ethnic tensions. Guyana achieved independence in 1966 and four years later became a cooperative republic within the Commonwealth. The sugar industry was nationalized and the country's economic base diversified through production of rice and bauxite. However, Guyana's economy was in almost permanent recession up until 1990 as it slid out of mainstream engagement with the rest of the world and experienced the exodus of much of its educated class. Its domestic economy was not helped by border disputes with neighboring Venezuela and Suriname. In 1992, elections installed the US-educated dentist Dr Cheddi Jagan as president. An aging Marxist, Dr Jagan was in danger of seeming an anachronism, but Guyana's recovery meant he was more likely to be consulting the IMF than the teachings of Karl Marx. Dr Jagan's wife Janet became president of Guyana in 1997, amid protests. In summer 1999, Jagan retired from the presidency and named Bharrat Jagdeo as her successor.

Sir Walter Raleigh visited the territory in 1595 and this was followed by several unsuccessful attempts to establish permanent settlements. The Dutch finally succeeded in 1616 with the establishment of a settlement at Kyk-over-al on an island in the Essequibo River where the remnants of a fort can still be seen. A number of other settlements later sprang up in Essequibo. A second colony was carved out in Berbice when a settlement was established there in 1627. Subsequently, the colony of Demerara was also settled by the Dutch. During the 18th and 19th centuries, these three colonies changed hands several times. The British seized them from the Dutch in 1781 but lost them to the French six months later. The French held them for two years before restoring them to the Dutch in 1783. In 1796, the British again captured the colonies but handed them back to the Dutch in 1802. The British recaptured them in the following year and in 1831 united them as the Colony of British Guiana. They ruled the colony until May 1966 when it became an independent state within the British Commonwealth of Nations. On February 23, 1970, Guyana became a Cooperative Republic within the Commonwealth.

Suriname is also one of the most ethnically and culturally mixed countries in the world. In Paramaribo, the capital of this Dutch speaking nation of about 450,000 people architecture graphically reflects this synthesis of peoples. A beautiful Mughal style mosque shares the same street with an imposing nineteenth-century wooden synagogue, several Hindu temples and the Roman Catholic cathedral can be found in the capital as well. Suriname like Guyana are colourful mixtures of African and Asian influences. FIGURE 1. Ethnic Distribution Source: CIA Factbook The Political Scene Their fears were in part justified, for Guyana and Suriname underwent a series of political and economic traumas in the 1980s. A coup in 1980 brought Colonel Desi Bouterse to power, and when 15 opposition leaders were executed in 1982, the Netherlands imposed sanctions. Then, from 1986, a guerrilla war broke out between boschnegers and the Paramaribo-based military regime. Civilian rule was only solidly re-established in 1991, and since then the country's fractious ethnic parties have formed more or less unstable coalition governments. The former dictator Bouterse, who has remained an influential presence, was indicted for cocaine smuggling by a Dutch court in 1997; the Surinamese Government refused to extradite him but in 1999 he was sentenced in absentia to 16 years.

GUYANA The Dutch began colonizing this South American region in the early 17th century. The British and the French also sought to dominate here and eventually, the British succeeded: it became a British colony in 1831. In 1966, independence was declared and from then till 1992, the same party was in power (People's National Congress). The party, socialist in ideology, nationalized most of the large companies in the country which contributed to a resource-rich country remaining relatively poor and dependent on foreign aid. In 1992, the People's Progressive Party took over but made little inroads into privatizing the potentially lucrative bauxite and sugar industries. After the death of party leader Cheddi Jagan in March 1997, the prime minister became president and Jagan's widow became prime minister. Elections held later that year brought Mrs. Jagan into power but opposition to these results by the members of the People's National Congress led to mass demonstrations and rioting. The PNC represents the interests of black Guyanese while the PPP is primarily the party of Guyana's East Indians. In 1999, Mrs. Jagan resigned and was succeeded by Bharrat Jagdeo.

Possessions continued to change hands in the late 18th and early 19th cent. until the Congress of Vienna (1815) awarded the settlements of Berbice, Demerara, and Essequibo to Great Britain; they were united as British Guiana in 1831. Slavery was abolished in 1834. In 1879 gold was discovered, thus speeding British expansion toward the Orinoco delta and resulting in the Venezuela Boundary Dispute After World War II significant progress toward self-government was made. Under the 1952 constitution, elections were won (1953) by the PPP, headed by Cheddi Jagan , who formed a government. However, the British deemed the government pro-Communist and suspended the constitution. Subsequently the PPP split, and Forbes Burnham formed the PNC. The PPP again won elections in 1957 and (after self-government was granted) in 1961, but was politically weakened by strikes and unrest; it later emerged that much of the agitation was precipitated or funded by the U.S.
