Extractions: Terror in Guyana? Short History of Guyana: Pre-Independence Guyana was originally settled by the Dutch in the 17th century. The British gained control of this territory, and it remained a colony from 1814 until 1966, when it gained its independence. The area that is now Guyana was 'discovered' by Spanish expeditions in 1499. By the mid-18th century the Dutch had forced out the Spanish and British expeditions. British control began in 1814, but the 'Colony of British Guiana' didn't officially come about until 1831. Slavery played a major role in the early history of Guyana. Guyana's first constitution was during British rule in 1928. The Right To Vote was granted in 1953. British Guiana gained full self-government in 1961, and the People's Progressive Party (PPP), under leader Cheddi Jagan, gained the majority in the legislative assembly. In 1962 Premier Jagan introduced a programme of radical economic measures. The violent riots and general strike that ensued wreaked havoc. British troops were called in to restore order in February 1962 and again in 1963.

The country is aptly named because if its profusion of rivers, creeks, and other bodies of water. It is located in the northern part of the Amazon Basin of South America, so it is quite understandable that there should be many waterways to the Atlantic Ocean. The three main rivers are, from west to east, the Essequibo, Demerara and Berbice Rivers. Guyana, formerly British Guiana, is the only English-speaking country in South America , and its neighbours are Venezuela, Brazil, and Suriname (formerly Dutch Guiana) to the west, south and east respectively. Although on the South American continent, Guyana is regarded as the only country in the West Indies the rest of the West Indies are island states. At 83,000 sq.miles (215,000 sq.km.) Guyana is about the size of the United Kingdom, and is the largest country in the West Indies. Of this area, some 90% of the population live in the coastal belt, some 270 miles long by 10 to 40 miles deep. This area is below sea level at high tide, so to stave off the relentless onslaught of the Atlantic Ocean, sea walls (or dykes) and sluices (or kokers ) line the coastline.

The Sword of the Spirit was an Association of lay people pledged to the love and service of others with no exception. The idea of a catholic hospital was not a new one and over the years was being considered by different people, but for one reason or the other, had to be put aside. It was at a group discussion of the "Sword of the Spirit" that the idea of a catholic hospital was once again considered and a challenging decision was taken to build a catholic hospital. They envisioned that this hospital would have as its philosophy, the commitment to serve the community by making available competent health care to those who sought it, irrespective of race, colour or creed, mindful of the teachings of Jesus Christ, Gospel values and the spiritual/physical nature of humankind endeavors. The dignity and individuality of every person was to be honoured by rendering this care in a compassionate and Christian manner. As a result of this decision, a committee was setup to bring this project into being. The committee was comprised of doctors, lawyers and businessmen, all members of the "Sword of the Spirit" movement. Extractions: by Hazel Woolford HOME THIS article seeks to examine the status of political alliances in Guyana, during the second half of the twentieth century. It will be noted, that there was no scope for independents to contest elections, after 1953, and that the major political parties, only opted for alliances when their power appeared threatened, or when they were in the opposition. In 1951, the Waddington Constitution provided for universal adult suffrage in British Guiana. This historic step in our political history, meant that all Guyanese who were 21 years old and over, had the opportunity to vote, at the 1953 General Election. It was this election which sharply etched Cheddi Jagan and Forbes Burnham in Guiana's political landscape. Jagan had successfully contested in the 1947 elections as an Independent candidate. But the 1953 general election was different. Jagan had become leader of the PPP, and the chairman was Forbes Burnham. While Burnham had not previously contested for a seat in the Legislative Assembly, he had participated in the municipal elections. Burnham had been elected a member of the Georgetown Town Council in 1952. Hence, he had a taste of the cut and thrust of politics. Both of these men were charismatic leaders who had established a strong relationship with the very militant trade unions. However, in the 1950s, they could not win the general elections easily, unless they joined forces. Jagan controlled the rural Indian votes while Burnham exercised a strong influence on the voting patterns in the urban centres, particularly in Georgetown. It was Norman Cameron's opinion that the coalition of Burnham and Jagan was an alliance of the major races and the two socialist ideologies.

Guyana is a relatively small developing country of 83,000 square miles. The largest ethnic group is the descendants of the East Indian indentured labourers from India. The descendants of Africans who were brought as slaves from West Africa, comprise the next largest ethnic group. Other significant groups are the native Amerindians, (who it is believed, came originally from Mongolia) Chinese and Europeans, many of the latter being of Portuguese extraction. Like the Indians and the Chinese, the Portuguese who came to "Demerara" mainly from Madeira, the Azores and Cape Verde, were indentured labourers. During colonial rule they were regarded as separate and apart from other Europeans because of their indentured status.
