In addition to being the first American in history to receive a perfect "10," Mitch went on to capture a Silver medal for Vaulting and two Bronze medals for Rings and Parallel Bars. As the number one ranked gymnast in 1983 and 1984, Mitch invented two skills now named internationally after him. To this day, the Gaylord Flip and the Gaylord Two are considered two of the most difficult and spectacular feats in gymnastics. After the Olympics, he was appointed to the President's Council for Physical Fitness by Ronald Reagan. During this time, he fulfilled numerous speaking engagements, endorsements and appearances across the country. In 1986, Mitch his acting debut in Columbia Pictures' "American Anthem." In 1988, he hosted his own television series "Fan Club," and went on to appear m several advertisements including Levi's, Diet Coke, Nike, Vidal Sasson, Soloflex and Texaco, among others. In 1995, in addition to being inducted into UCLA's Hall of Fame, his talents were upon by the producers of the blockbuster, "Batman Forever," to be the stunt double for "Robin." At the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, Mitch served as a journalist/broadcaster providing human interest segments and expert commentary.

Extractions: Gymnastics Section Gymnastics, as an activity, has existed for over 2,000 years, but its development as a competitive sport began just a little more than 100 years ago. During the 1800s, mass and individual exhibitions were conducted by various school clubs, athletic clubs and ethnic organizations such as the Turnvereins and Sokols. Although slow to catch on in the schools, gymnastics did flourish in the Turnvereins and Sokols. It was introduced to the United States and its school systcms in the 1830s by such immigrants as Charles Beck, Charles Follen and Francis Lieber. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) was formed in 1881, then called the Bureau of the European Gymnastics Federation, opening the way for international competition. In the United States, the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) assumed control of gymnastics, along with most other amateur sports, in 1883. Prior to this time gymnastics championships were held by various clubs and organizations. The first large-scale meeting of gymnasts was the 1896 Olympics, where Germany virtually swept the medal parade. Seventy-five gymnasts from five countries competed in the men's horizontal bar, parallel bars, pommel horse, still rings, and vault events.
