The focus of the class is a positive learning experience while working on basic motor skills, eye-hand coordination, strength, agility, and beginning gymnastics skills. The children work on all the gymnastics equipment, which is lowered for their height, as well as spcecially designed preschool equiptment. At the present time, PJC offers ten Tiny Tumblers classes that meet for one hour, one day a week.

Hello, my name is Robert Jordan and I teach all the classes at Voglers Studio in Oldtown. My wife of 28 years, Kathy Vogler Jordan, is my only substitute teacher. We have three children: Richard, 19 years old, Cherie, 15 years old, and Lana Loraine, 7 years old. My wife and I founded Vogler s Studio in 1978 in Welcome, N.C. Since then I have devoted myself full time to teaching young children to dance. I believe my best reference now is my students. I am certified to teach the Performing Arts by Dance Educators of America (ballet, tap and jazz), to teach ballet, tap, jazz, and acrobatics by Dance Masters of America, and I am also a certified United States Association of Independent Gymnastics Clubs Coach. Extractions: North Stars Gymnastics Academy, NJ The Stalder The key here is the technique of the entry into the skill, what has been called a "late drop." There was also a study by Gord Osbourne (University of Alberta) in Canada that compared the two techniques on entering into the Stalder for men's horizontal bar, and indicates that biomechanically the late drop was a better technique. It was watching the Stalder HS/toe HS sequence that was key for me. The absolute similarity of the drop for the two skills gave me the ideas for these progressions, and a key to performing the skill well. The advantage of the "late drop" is that it forces the maximum extension away (for swing) from the bar with the best control. It parallels the drop from a HS for a clearhip circle or glide kip, so there is some "carry-over" from those skills. On page 17 is a chart to show a possible progression for teaching the Stalder. Now let's take the top line of the chart. The first step from left to right are the flexibility requirements for this skill, an excellent pike and straddle compression. The lower back may be susceptible to strains if not stretched well. There will be a good amount of force stretching the lower back at the "bottom" of the circle, so excellent lower back flexibility is as important as leg and hip flexibility to "get into" the proper straddle position to perform the skill. The second element over is a specific "strength" drill for the last phase of the skillthe HS. Using a floor bar, first straddle press HS with the feet behind the bar. Later on, the feet will be placed slightly "in front" of the bar with the hands having to reach slightly between the legs and under the body to press to the HS, partially simulating one of the opening techniques for the Stalder.

Jump from floor to pike sole circle off, and around increase height of starting surface to the same; add a late straddle through to a stalder "rock" and return; then to around the bar and then progressively working up to a straddled HS. Common Errors : "Straddling" on top of the bar (early entry) before the COG has started to fall back into the circle. Not compressing deep enough to stay in position at the "bottom" of the swing (coming out too soon); not keeping shoulders over the bar to control the body shape into the drop.

Chances are when they see the other children having fun doing the station they will join in. So be patient and most of the time the child will choose to do the station, and if not, that's okay. Extractions: When you ask the children to demonstrate their work make sure the demonstration serves a purpose - try to avoid having demonstrations simply for the sake of filling time! Make sure if you give a demonstration it is the best you can do - sloppy demonstrations often lead to sloppy work from the children eg. don't allow running with arms folded, hands in pockets etc... Pinpoint what it is you want the children to observe during the demonstration and ask questions to check that they have observed it eg. before demo ......... "I want you to watch my legs carefully as I jump and land" after demo............ "who can tell me what happened to my legs as I landed?" etc..... If a demonstration is performed well by the child(ren) - tell the class why you liked it ie. reinforce the quality of work you desire through demonstration. If you are making specific reference to safety aspects on the apparatus, then these instructions should be given immediately prior to when the children are about to start their work. Thus, safety instructions are 'fresh in their minds' at the time of performance.
