Bookmark: December 1996: Best Staff Reads Of 1996 Literary bios were plentiful and there can't be many well known authors who commentaryon the inhuman demands put upon young American female gymnasts and ice http://library.christchurch.org.nz/Bookmark/1996/December/Beststaffreads.asp
Extractions: Booktalk Book reviews Books into film Connect ... Library publications You are here: Bookmark December 1996 seemed at first to have been a lean year for books since, at first glance, there didn't seem a lot of standout titles. On reflection, however, there was some very good material, not all of it highly publicised. Three of the best novels I read this year were set in Britain in the 1950s and gave an evocative picture of the time without self-consciously laying on the period detail in the way the BBC and Merchant Ivory often do. John Preston's Ghosting is about a man who, partly because of being something of a blank personality, becomes a successful radio announcer and then a TV personality. It's an unsettling impressive debut. Tim Binding's A perfect execution , about a man who becomes the state hangman out of curious compassionate motives, is very good and highly readable even if its plot turns on too many coincidences. Patrick McGrath's Asylum is a powerful tale of a woman, married to the superintendent of a psychiatric hospital, who falls for a patient. This remorseless bleak picture of an out of control affair that wrecks lives is sad and haunting and it's McGrath's best book to date. It deserved to be on the Booker shortlist and it's a shame it wasn't. I've only read one of the Booker shortlist this year, Beryl Bainbridge's

Suns' Rise Proves Colangelo's Got Game the media that joked about how Colangelo was the most valuable general manager in Harris'72 I'm not so sure about these three Romanian gymnasts posing nude http://www.azcentral.com/sports/cheapseats/gambo/0106rant.html
Extractions: Jan. 6, 2002 There are many story lines coming out of the 2002-03 Phoenix Suns, from rookie sensation Amare Stoudemire to the All-Star-caliber play of Stephon Marbury and Shawn Marion to the resurrection of Penny Hardaway as a consistent contributor. But no story may be as important than that of General Manager Bryan Colangelo. For without him, none of this would be happening. Last year there were some in the media that joked about how Colangelo was the most valuable general manager in the Eastern Conference. His trade of Jason Kidd turned the New Jersey Nets into a powerhouse that reached the NBA Finals; his trade of Cliff Robinson helped the Detroit Pistons earn a playoff berth and become a legitimate threat; and he gave Boston some much-needed depth in Rodney Rogers and Tony Delk as the Celtics made a playoff push. But guess whose laughing now? Colangelo is easily the favorite to win the Executive of the Year award. The Suns, who were expected to be a lottery team again, are the surprise of the NBA and currently the third-best team in the Western Conference behind Dallas and Sacramento.
