A great source for boards and beyond.
This is a great book. When I bought it, I was expecting a "typical" board-oriented book (short on many clinical details). Surprisingly, this is a very good source for general review of gastroenterology outside the board preparation. It has all the general information needed at it is very current based on the latest evidence. You can use it as a stand-alone source to read for GI and its size is very manageable. text is clear and enjoyable with good tables and pictures.

Helpful resource
This review is definitely worth using to prepare for the GI boards. It is as well organized and comprehensive as any one source could be. I found it very useful and even answered questions that I remembered reviewing exactly from this book. However, I would recommend a supplementary review source as well, especially for color plates of histology andexamples of esophageal manometry and pH monitor readings etc. Overall, a good source.

This is all you need
I can't tell you how valuable this single resource is. The text is imminently readable and the info is right on the money. I felt like I was drowning in a sea of confusing resources until I locked on to this book. Using it alone, with no other study aid, I passed the boards. I needed an update for endoscopy procedures and saw this book on Amazon,,,plus a co-worker suggested this title and I went with it.

FANTASTIC!!!
This book is an amazing little fountain of knowledge to have at your fingertips during clerkship year.I only discovered the Little Black Book series as a fourth year med student, and I so wish I had known about them earlier.They would have saved me a lot of time and made coming up with differentials, workup, etc. MUCH easier.

The book starts out with presenting GI symptoms, then goes through each part of the GI system: esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, etc. -- detailing every conceivable problem in an extremely clear, consise way.For each disease you get the cause, epidemiolgy, pathophysiology, symptoms, course, complications, DIFFERENTIAL (this is key!!!), lab & radiographic findings, workup, and treatment.Complete with references.

The whole book is so well-written and easy to use.I can't say enough good things about it.Best of all - IT FITS IN YOUR WHITE COAT POCKET.It is perfect to just carry with you and read when you're standing around doing nothing in the hospital -- or peek into quickly just before rounds when you have to present a patient and need some fast help.This book has it all -- thanks, Dr. Hay!

Endoscopy only, not GI patient mgmt
Was not what I was expecting. It is mainly only on endoscopy. Years ago (1996 or so) Lange had an excellent Current Gastroenterology Diagnosis & Treatment book, that's what I thought this was. It is not.

I thought this was the updated version of CGDT.

So this is not helpful in management, only on endoscopy findings.

This is by far the best reference if you are looking for evidence in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Objectives very clear and useful for attendings, residents and medical students not only in a G.I. service but also in a medicine rotation. It helps me a lot when we are discussing a controversial topic like treatment in functional dyspepsia, treatment of ulcerative colitis or the screening in colorectal cancer on rounds or even in a conference. I especially like chapters 1 (evidence based gastroenterology), 3 (ulcer disease and helicobacter pylori infection) and 25 (ascites and hepatorenal syndrome) .
