Product Description
Genome analysis and genomics are at the forefront of current research in the life sciences. Since the first edition of Principles of Genome Analysis was published, the sequencing of genomes has continued apace, with the major landmark of the human genome sequence being achieved in 2001. Now the emphasis of biological research is on genomics: the understanding of gene function and the interaction of gene products at the whole genome level.

As before, this book provides a step-by-step outline of the techniques involved in genome mapping and sequencing. Additionally, the text has been greatly expanded to cover sub-disciplines of genomics, revisions of sections on genome sequencing and bioinformatics, and new chapters on comparative genomics, functional genomics and proteomics. The book concludes with an exciting new chapter describing a variety of ways to utilize genome analysis and sequencing in biology, medicine and agriculture.

Aimed at advanced undergraduates, this text will follow the same format as the highly successful Principles of Gene Manipulation by Primrose, Twyman and Old, now in its sixth edition. ... Read more

Product Description
DNA and RNA fingerprinting based on arbitrarily primed PCR provides the most powerful tool for the study of genes. The basic techniques are described in detailed protocols including each step from template preparation to fingerprint visualization. Various protocols for the basic techniques allow to choose between alternative strategies. In addition to the general techniques specific research applications of particular interest are given such as gene mapping, detection of somatic mutations, gene abnormally expressed in tumors or differentially expressed genes by RNA fingerprinting. ... Product Description

In recent years, high-density DNA microarrays have revolutionized biomedical research and drug discovery efforts by the pharmaceutical industry. Their efficacy in identifying and prioritizing drug targets based on their ability to confirm a large number of gene expression measurements in parallel has become a key element in drug discovery. Microarray Innovations: Technology and Experimentation examines the incredibly powerful nature of array technology and the ways in which it can be applied to understanding the genomic basis of disease.

Explores a myriad of applications in use today

This volume explores recent innovations in the microarray field and tracks the evolution of the major platforms currently used. The international panel of contributors presents a survey of the past five years’ research and advancements in microarray methods and applications and their usage in drug discovery and biomedical research. The contributions discuss improvements in automation (array fabrication and hybridization), new substrates for printing arrays, platform comparisons and contrasts, experimental design, and data normalization and mining schemes. They also review epigenomic array studies, electronic microarrays, comparative genomic hybridization, microRNA arrays, and mutational analyzes. In addition, the book provides coverage of important clinical diagnostic arrays, protein arrays, and neuroscience applications.

Examines improved methodologies

As microarrays have evolved steadily over time from archetypical in-house complementary DNA (cDNA) arrays to robust commercial oligonucleotide platforms, there has been a migration to higher density biochips with increasing content and better analytical methodologies. This compendium summarizes the vast advances that have been made in this technology, highlighting the supreme advantages of microarray-based approaches in the field of biomedical research.

5-0 out of 5 stars A spectacular continuation
Continues where the previous book, Biochips as Pathways to Drug Discovery (Drug Discovery Series), left off. If you've read that book, this will act very much as a continuation of similar fundamental expert reviews, but using updated thinking, methods, and technologies. Furthermore, if you are familiar with the previous book, "Biochips as Pathways to Drug Discovery", you already know the impact microarrays have had on both drug discovery and biomedical research. But you don't need to own the previous book to dive into this one. It explains everything so in that regard it is very much a self-contained unit.

With that in mind, this new book covers a lot of ground in several interesting areas such as The Statistical Design and Analysis of Gene Expression, How to Evaluate a Microarray Scanner, and Methods for Assessing Microarray Performance to list a few. It also features outstanding applications of the emerging assay developments in the Development of an Integrated Molecular Diagnostic Test to Identify Respiratory Viruses, Microarrays in Neuroscience, and Optimization of Protein Array Fabrication for Establishing High-Throughput Ultra-Sensitive Microarray Assays for Cancer Research.

Among these interesting areas discussed, I found myself particularly intrigued by the ones discussing DNA Methylation Arrays, Methods for Assessing Microarray Performance, and New Applications for Microarrays. I would like to emphasize that the level of craftsmanship that went into the writing of each and every chapter is readily apparent and deserving of high praise. By that I mean the chapters are so well crafted and carefully chosen, that the overall effect is the feeling of something well put together and of high quality. I wish all technical books could be this good. I give it a five star rating all the way! ... Read more

Product Description
She had never felt so tired of it all, it seemed to her. The sun
streamed hot across the backs of the shining seats into her eyes, but she was too tired to get the window-pole. She watched the incoming class listlessly, wondering whether it would be worth while to ask one of them to close the shutter. They chattered and giggled and bustled in, rattling the chairs about, and begging one another's pardon vociferously, with that insistent politeness which marks a sharply defined stage in the social evolution of the young girl. They irritated her excessively--these little airs and graces. She opened her book with a snap, and began to call the roll sharply. ... Read more
