IF THERE IS A BETTER BOOK OUT THERE ON THIS SUBJECT IT MUST BE ONE HECK OF A BOOK.
I have been dabbling in Genealogy for a few years now.I have read, and in fact own, several books on the subject.I thought I knew quite a lot.I picked this book up at the local library sort of on whim; well, more than a whim because I needed some information in my battle with our government over some military records of long passed relatives.I brought the book home to study that particular section.I ended up reading the entire thing, cover to cover!I found I knew far less than I thought I knew!

Good grief, if I had to pick and choose and be allowed only one book on this subject, I would most certainly, without hesitation, pick this one.I learned more in the four days it took to read thing than I have learned from all the other books I have read combined and all the seminars I have attended.I felt an mild (well, actually it was more than mild) attack of chagrin when I finished and began realizing all the money I have wasted....arrrrrgh!

From setting up and organizing (an area in my life that needs a lot of work), through the actual process of DNA testing, it is all here.Research methods, obscure unthought of sources, methods of snipping though the endless red tape (this aspect of this hobby, if you want to call it a hobby, drives me up a wall), traditional and nontraditional methods and sources of research, on-line resources, planning a successful genealogical research trip, cost considerations, (did I mention valuable and obscure research sources?), searching in other countries, cemetery research, and the list goes on and on and on.

One of the best and most delightful aspects of this book though is its readability.The author writes for the reader and not to the reader or down to the reader.He says what he wants to say and does not muck around about it.You get the information you need served up in a very straightforward manner.No mumbling and word play here.I do love and appreciate this.I will bet that this guy is one heck of a teacher.

And for me the absolute best thing and one of the most helpful, where the author's tips on organizing the information you already have and the information you will get, and be able to record all of this information into a comprehensive format(s) that you and others can actually read and make sense of.That information alone is pure gold as far as I am concerned.

The book is very will organized, very well referenced and liberally illustrated.At 442 pages of high quality paper, it is a heavy puppy but not so heavy that it is a burden to pack with you on your many trips.

My Scrooge like qualities as to money are legendary in my family as well as among my friends, but I am actually going to spring for the bucks and buy this volume to add to my collection...actually, I might well sell the other books on this subject and stick with just this one!

This was a book required by a on line class at a junior college.It is a basic book for beginner's.

Excellent Book - One of the Best in My Genealogy Library
This is an excellent book. I am an experienced computer user and genealogist. I bought this book to help integrate the two and it does that very well. At the end of a chapter it has a section which requires you to do something related to the chapter. This forces you to think about and use what you have learned.

Genealogy and geneaology but no internet
The title of this book is a bit deceptive. It doesn't focus much on the computer aspect of genealogy; instead it primarily sticks to traditional how-to material for beginning genealogists.Also, the computer related material is designed for the never-picked-up-a-mouse-before neophyte. If you have any computer experience at all, skip this book & get one on genealogy basics.You are better off exploring your software and the internet for yourself.

Useful sources and reminders, but the web site is better
When Hornbeck began researching her family a quarter-century ago, she also began collecting miscellaneous general and methodological information that seemed useful. Later, when she found herself publishing several newsletters, her collection of tips saw use as "fillers," and her readers began asking persmission to repeat them elsewhere. Then came the Internet and a whole flood of new tips posted by researchers. Even though she now has a web site filled with tips (take a look at ), not everyone has ready access to the Net, so a book seemed in order. Everything is grouped into more than forty categories, from copyright, death records, and holidays to microfilm, myths, and the military. Coverage is not meant to be uniform, however; because of her personal research interests, there are sections on German, Russian, and Polish research, but no other European (or non-European) ethnic groups. She does include a great many specialized web sites, including collections of ship's passenger lists, calendar conversion sites, online regimental listings, cemetery listings, lists of plagues and epidemics, and so on. The work was compiled from hundreds of armorials and it contains anextensive glossary of terms. In addition to a full description of the arms, most entries identify thenationality of the arms bearer, his title, and the date his title was conferred. The basic text wasestablished with the publication of the second edition, corrected and enlarged, of 1884-1887. In1950 a reprint was published in a limited edition of 250 copies, with a new Preface and newAdditions and Corrections. The present reprint is an exact reproduction of this 1950 edition. The volumes are in French, but the information is stereotyped, and easily understood.

Rietstap is good but DOES NOT contain "every valid European coat of arms" by any means. WHy do you propagate such myths???

The classic reference source for Continental heraldry
Rietstap's intention was to compile the blazons of every armorial family in Europe, from Brittany and Utrecht to Dorset and Transylvania, and he made an excellent start before his death, though he ventured the opinion that the labor involved would be too great to complete it. Many, many names appear in his work that were previously collected nowhere else. The father and son team of V. Rolland and H. V. Rolland took twenty-three years to complete the monumental work (the Supplement), which eventually included more than 100,000 distinct blazons. The Rollands' six volumes of illustrations were intended to make life easier for those to whom formal heraldic language was as foreign as the French in which Rietstap wrote his descriptions. For uncommon names, and especially for non-English names, Rietstap and all the supplementary volumes to his original work can often provide a jumping-off point -- the discovery that, somewhere in the past, a family in which you're interested was important enough to be entitled to coat-armor.

And to the previious reviewer who complained that this was all in French -- if you have a serious interest in heraldry, you'd *better* have some familiarity with French, not to mention Latin!

Who Speaks French?
I recently ordered this book and was surprised when I recived it to findthat it is TOTALLY IN FRENCH! (ALL 2400 PLUS PAGES) It appeared to have awealth of information ( and of courses many thousands of names), but I hadto return it. It would be nice if the web site indicated what language thebooks are written in.
