5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Tool
I am new to British genealogy, so this book is very helpful to me because whenever I need help with a certian topic, I just look it up and there's help right there. The explanations under each topic aren't too wordy. They just cut to the main points, I think.

The book itself is made of good quality materials and it seems that it will stand up to my constant page flipping for help!

Also, Amazon offers this book at a great price!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for UK genealogy
This book is one of my favorites for understanding family history in the United Kingdom.

It is basically an A through Z dictionary of genealogical terms and concepts commonly encountered in British research. The definitions given are both thorough and entertainingly written. Many include references on where more information on the topic may be obtained or where particular records are held. There are illustrations and photographs every four to five pages showing useful examples of terms defined in the text.

If you don't know an advowson from a wardmote, this dictionary will help you decipher both the quaint and common words used in British family history. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Got what I paid for:)
This book is old and dated. Didn't pay attention to that when I ordered it but it cost less than the shipping so oh well. Not really anything useful for a new or old genealogist.

2-0 out of 5 stars Review-How to Trace Your Family Tree
The staff of the American Genealogical Research Institute have compiled an easy to understand primer for the beginning genealogist in the How to Trace Your Family Tree.

This book consists of 11 Chapters and a bibliography. Procedures for the genealogist range from organizing genealogy research findings, beginning research with living immediate family members and various sources for research including printed sources, local records, state records, federal research sources and the miscellaneous records of churches and cemeteries. Also included is a chapter on heraldry and final chapter on hereditary, patriotic and genealogical societies.

Thoughout the book, there are no endnotes or footnotes for each of the chapters. There is, however a bibliography at the end of the book presumably listing all references used in compiling this primer. Without the endnotes and footnotes of each chapter, it is difficult to understand where the material has been drawn.

All in all, How to Trace Your Family Tree is a good example of a genealogical reference guide that is useful for beginning genealogists. For those who are advanced in the research, this book offers little value.

I would recommend it as a quick reference guide for those who are just embarking on the genealogy research.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Starting Point!
For someone interested in tracing thier family tree, this book is a good starting point. It explains how to get started and where to go from there. There is a great section on how to use your family members for information. There are also sections on where to find family records. The charts they include, however are very small and need to be reproduced in order to be used.Overall this book is worth reading if your thinking about digging into your past successfully. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For the Love of GermanicAncestry and History
Now that I have read this wonderful resource completely, I intend to reread it over several times. It is packed with information covering not only the historical events of Germany and the European Empires, but historical maps, a timeline, query letters written in English and German, addresses of National and Provincial (State) sites that can either assist you or provide you with copies of records. This book is a trove of valuable information to anyone researching their ancestry. I was so appreciative of all the resources offered in this book. I purchased this book used, for an excellent price. The binding was old and a number of pages became detached however. I merely taped them, so I can reuse this book again. It looks like a workbook, so you would want to read it at a desk or on your lap. I love maps, and the maps in this book are extremely helpful in understanding how the boundaries of several European countries changed with each succession of Rulers. It also explained each of the Reichs or Empires in Germany. Now I understand what is must have been like, living at the time of the Germanic Tribes, the Hapsburgs, Charlemagne, Ottoman Turks, the migration of both German and Slavic groups, and especially all the turmoil dished out to the Jewish population. The Russian, Prussians, the disappearance of Poland... it's all clearly represented in this wonderful book. It was an enjoyable read...not philosophical, not too lengthy, and very informative. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Comments after initial orientation to the book
I read about this book in the August 2000 issue of National Georgraphic magazine, and grew very eager to read it. For years I've been searching for ways to explore family roots in Shepitikava, Ukraine, around and prior to1920. This book provides details I would not have found anywhere unless Idid the on site research the author Weiner has done. What a find! Auntsborn in Shepitivka prior to 1920 still live today and will be mesmerized bythe details I will soon point out to them. For that matter, their father,my grandfather, may well be pictured in one 1920 photo of Jewish men inShepetivka at the cemetary's new gate.

5-0 out of 5 stars At long lasta pathway to our family history in Ukraine
I recently received my copy of this long awaited work by Miriam Weiner. In addition to providing the first tangible inventory of what the regional archives hold, in regard to the history of our Jewish families, this bookgives a wonderful pictorial overview of the area. One which most of uscould only imagine until now.It does so by providing photos of the placesour families inhabited in the past, contrasted, in many instances, with howthose same places appear now.

The vivid past jumps off the pages ofthis beautifully formatted book, just as the lure of the book'svastarchive document inventory tempts the reader with its researchpossibilitiesfor the future.

This book is a must for anyonecontemplating research into their family history in Ukraine and Moldova, and a treasure for those who are merely curious about the world ourancestors lived in and left behind. ... Read more

Here you'll meet the people and situations you're already familiar with--the BORE, the BLUEBLOOD, the OLD MASTER, and the BRIEFCASE MAGNET, and a clutch of dissembling officials, wet-nosed beginners, and tongue-clucking harridans--but this time the meeting will drive you wild with laughter.

And you'll read about the sins of the D.A.R., research trip survival tactics, sadism in the county courthouse, the banality of workshops and seminars, the proper etiquette in prying information from reluctant relatives, and much, much more.
