Just what I wanted!
We have had a Clan Map which has travelled all over the world with us on our postings overseas for 35 years but it is now looking a bit tattered.We tried to buy a replacement when in Scotland this year - none of the shops which we visited stocked what we wanted!When we returned to NZ I went on-line and found this map which exactly fulfilled our requirements.We wanted the clans, sub-sects and the areas in Scotland which they originally inhabited - all are on this map.I am sure that it will be equally as good as our previous one which was a great talking point for visitors trying to find out if they had any Scottish connections - whichever country they came from! ... Personal remarks
The book features no sources at all (only photographic credits).
-Page 5. Good photo on the parade of the Opening Ceremony of 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.
-Page 10. Another very good photo featuring the Olympic flag and the Salk Lake City flag along with other countries.
-Page 49. Kosovo considered as a country, despite it is "... recognized by more than 40 (mainly Western) nations".
-Page 50. The book's biggest mistake: Montenegro red flag with no yellow border.
-State (subnational) flags only for Australia and USA.
-Includes flags for Christmas Island and Cocos Islands but omitted Norfolk Island (not ever mentioned).
-Page 94. Northern Mariana Is. flag with a incorrect darker blue field.
-Page 100. For New Caledonia describes a local flag in the following terms: "... red field upon which is (...) in white (...) a cagou ...." -Have you heard about such a flag?
-Page 105. Tokelau: It says that "... from the 1980s an unofficial blue flag, displaying three white stars and gold circles (...) began to be used for some international sports events"... Such a statement is clearly false. Tokelau always flew the New Zealand flag (at least officially), there has been no other flag until that recently adopted in 2008.
-Page 128. Illustrates local flag of Saint-Barthelemy: coat of arms on a white field.
-Page 176. Not illustrated but described the "local flag" of Mayotte: "... is white, with Mayotte's coat of arms at the centre, supported by two sea horses and the island's name above".
-Page 184. Western Sahara placed in the de-facto states section, despite is it recognized by ca. 40 countries like Kosovo (p. 49).
-De-facto states include: Northern Cyprus, Palestine, South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Karabakh, Dniester Republic, Western Sahara and Somaliland.
-Omitted the flag of the Netherlands Antilles assuming that the entity is going to disappear in 2008. Instead it presents the flag of the five main islands.
-African section includes some political odd comments, v.g.Zimbabwe (p. 172).
-It is easily perceived that most of the information (about flags meaning and symbolism) is got from the internet.

Physically, it is a high quality book, thick well-bound white pages, full coloured illustrated, and soft, manageable, thick cover.

It could be considered as a very basic book, more an Almanac than a Vexillology book.

Though illustrated, the flags featured are quite small: 2.5 cm. (apr.) high.

A treasure of history and cultural development
One of the things that make maps so valuable is the way they communicate information about the times and the culture when the map was made that were totally unintentional by the mapmaker.Most of our culture is invisible to us.We live and move in it and the things we do, say, build, and leave behind just seem to us the way things are.And they are; for now.However, in a hundred years or even further into the future there will be aspects of our time that will seem absolutely foreign to our descendents and some things that will resonate with their own view of themselves.

So it is with the wonderful maps in this book.London has long been one of the great cities in the world and its history goes back to Roman times and even earlier.In this book we start in mid-Tudor times.It is so fascinating to see how close to the river this great city was and how small it is compared to the monster city of today.We get to see other maps leading up to the Great Fire of 1666.There we see how much of the city was destroyed and the various proposals for rebuilding and what was actually built again.

Not all of the maps are of the whole city, we see how certain key areas were designed and built.There are also interesting details of land use, in what order the countryside was swallowed into the city.

There are also health study and social reform maps especially in the Victorian era.Transportation proposals and the birth of Trafalgar Square make for interesting reading, as well.A famous aerial view done from a balloon is also included and makes for very interesting viewing.

There is such a wealth and variety that I cannot describe them all, but I consider this book a treasure.I have never lived in London, but visited it more than a dozen times and am familiar with many of the areas included in these maps and it is wonderful to learn more about the development of those areas. ... more informative 'legend' is required
i feel that there should be a more developed 'legend'.all the family names are there but there is no grid markings (like you would find on a street map) to help you locate the family name.it would be a helpful tool and make the map more user friendly.

Though this is not a book, it is packed full of info for anyone wanting to know more about Scotland of Old. It is giant in size and full of color. One side has a map of Scotland with the old clan territories and the other side has all of the old clan crests. This is a must have for anyone with Scotish heritage or for anyone who is interested in Scotish history. I live in the United States and the only place I was able to find a copy was in Canada.
