Product Description

The author tells a story drawn from oral memories, a story which will soon disappear with the last Inuit generation to have seen the whalers. Illuminated by a remarkable collection of drawings, photographs, and illustrations, many in full colour, tales are told of when the whalers first appeared on the north-east coast of Baffin Island, how they set up land stations in the whale-rich waters of Cumberland Sound, and how they eventually pushed on into Hudson Bay. During this time the Inuit not only fed and clothed the whalers, they hunted with them, adding to the whalers' wealth. Our understanding of change in Inuit life is often linked to the fur traders, who arrived in the North fifty years after the arrival of the whalers. In truth it is the Inuit's close contact with the foreign world of the whalers which marked the beginning of a change in previously undisturbed Inuit culture and traditions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Finding Helen - A Navajo Miracle
Didn't even read half the book. It was not very good, a thin book, layout was more like a pamplet type, but still a book . I finally threw the book away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding Helen
Finding Helen is a beautiful book---had me feeling elated and then in tears--The true story of a Navajo woman and her sister twin had been taken away at birth by the Doctor by tricking the young mother into signing a paper she couldn't read with her signature just an X. Her young husband away at work out of the area came back home and found out---and then, told the mother, "the strongest one will come home. Years and years later the daughter began searching and finally found her mother, and did "come home.

I have always had a love for the Indian people and when I heard about this story I wanted to read it. I loved it. Finished in two sittings. I hope she writes more about her heritage.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing story and miracle
I worked with Rose Johnson-Tsosie at EPRI.When I heard about her book I was eager to read it.I will be moving to New Mexico in a few years and am very interested in the culture of the Navajo People.

My heart ached for the young Helen when she discovered her babies were taken from her. What enormous relief & joy she must have felt when she learned her daughters had grown up to be beautiful, acommplished women.

This is a wonderful re-telling of the saga and I applaud Rose for telling it for all to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful story of one woman's journey back to her heritage
Great summer read!

Wow!What a moving story of a Navajo woman's 33 year journey back to herroots after being mistakenly adopted out in the 1950s. Written from the perspective of several key people in the story. The frightened 13 year old girl who travels to a small Hopi hospital to give birth to premature infant twins, the older Mormon couple who long for more children and then of course, the perspective of one of the twins (the author)growing up Navajo in an Anglo world.

This is a beautiful story that will be sure to tug at the heartstrings of every mother and anyone who loves an inspirational read about everyday miracles! ... Read more

Product Description
In the spring of 1935, at Snaketown, Arizona, two Pima Indians recounted and translated their entire traditional creation narrative. Juan Smith, reputedly the last tribesman with extensive knowledge of the Pima version of this story, spoke and sang while William Smith Allison translated into English and Julian Hayden, an archaeologist, recorded Allison's words verbatim. The resulting document, the "Hohokam Chronicles," is the most complete natively articulated Pima creation narrative ever written and a rare example of a single-narrator myth.
Now this extraordinary work, composed of thirty-six separate stories, is presented in its entirety for the first time. Beautifully expressed, the narrative constitutes a kind of scripture for a native church, beginning with the creation of the universe out of the void and ending with the establishment in the sixteenth century of present-day villages. Central to the story is the murder/resurrection of a god-man, Siuuhu, who summoned the Pimas and Papagos (Tohono O'odham) as his army of vengeance and brought about the conquest of his murderers, the ancient Hohokam.
Donald Bahr extensively annotates the text and supplements it with other Pima-Papago versions of similar stories. Important as a social and historic document, this book adds immeasurably to the growing body of Native American literature and to our knowledge of the development of Pima-Papago culture. ... Product Description

Told in their own words, Turtle Lung Woman’s Granddaughter is the unforgettable story of several generations of Lakota women who grew up on the open plains of northern Nebraska and southern South Dakota. Delphine Red Shirt has delicately woven the life stories of her mother, Lone Woman, and Red Shirt’s great-grandmother, Turtle Lung Woman, into a continuous narrative that succeeds triumphantly as a moving, epic saga of Lakota women from traditional times in the mid–nineteenth century to the present. Especially revealing are Turtle Lung Woman’s relationship with her husband, Paints His Face with Clay, her healing practice as a medicine woman, Lone Woman’s hardships and celebrations growing up in the early twentieth century, and many wonderful details of their domestic lives before and during the early reservation years.

1-0 out of 5 stars zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Unlike the last reviewer I was excited to read the book. Unfortunately it was a big dissapointment. I was bored to tears while reading this poorly written remake of every Native American story ever written, with none of the originality. It is truly surprising to see the level of writing published today, this is horrible.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Lakota way of life
I was sceptical to read this book because it was assigned to me to read for one of my criminal justice courses. However, I was really absorbed in the story of the Native American Tribe, the Lakotas. The book is written from an "Americanized" point of view. It tells a story of the authors great grandmother and her life as a Lakota woman. There are many fun and interesting things that happen to the Turgle Lung Woman. She speaks of her courting rituals, battle rituals, labor divisions between men and women, children roles.
There are interesting stories about homosexuality, adultury, death, commitment to the tribe and war.
Definitely an interesting book that contains historical facts and the culture of the Lakota tribe.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Eloquence Within
A beautiful minds, loving words, about family, about a people, about a way of life. This story combined with the beauty in word of " Bead on an Anthill " Delphine's first book sets the mind and soul, for a journey into one's self.
In the female voice of the Lakota, live the life set in the beauty that is the Northern Plains, of this Turtle Island.
The writting style is such , to savor each word as if it could fill you with the images it creates.
This is what award winning writing should be about......... ... Read more

Product Description

Joe Starita tells the triumphant and moving story of a Lakota-Northern Cheyenne family. In 1878, the renowned Chief Dull Knife, who fought alongside Crazy Horse, escaped from forced relocation in Indian Territory and led followers on a desperate six-hundred-mile freedom flight back to their homeland. His son, George Dull Knife survived the Wounded Knee Massacre and later toured in Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show. Guy Dull Knife Sr. fought in World War I and took part in the Siege of Wounded Knee in 1973. Guy Dull Knife Jr. fought in Vietnam and is now an accomplished artist. Starita updates the Dull Knife family history in his new afterword for this Bison Books edition.
Amazon.com Review
From his nursing home in South Dakota, 96-year-old Guy DullKnife Sr., the oldest surviving member of the Dull Knife family to beprofiled in this fascinating Sioux (also known as Lakota) history, says, "I was born in 1899 in a log house, but my father was bornin a tipi.... The tipi was in the shape of a circle and in the middleof the tipi there was always a campfire. This, too, was in the shapeof a circle. In the summers, when the Sioux from all over the Dakotas,Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana would gather for the Sun Dance, thetipis in the villages would always be arranged in a circle. The circlewas our symbol. It was a holy symbol that helped to remind us that wewere connected to everything else." In the tradition of NativeAmerican storytelling, many of the tales in this five-generationodyssey have been passed down from father to son through word ofmouth. Joe Starita, an award-winning investigative journalist, fillsin the gaps with more than a century's worth of family documents andarchival historical material.

In the latter part of the 19th century, Chief Dull Knife led hisfollowers through some of the most brutal and ruthless battles betweenthe white man and the Indians. His son George Dull Knife settled intoreservation life and went on to join Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. From his nursing home, George's son, Guy Dull Knife Sr., the soleliving Sioux World War I veteran, retells the tales of his youth andfamily history in his native Lakota tongue. His son Guy Dull KnifeJr., a Vietnam vet and self-taught sculptor, is trying to keep theways of his native people alive for his children and futuregenerations. Although Sioux women are said to have played importantroles in the survival of tribal traditions and culture, this volumeprimarily focuses on the male members of not only the Dull Knifefamily, but the tribe to which they are inextricably tied. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Dull Knifes of Pine Ridge: A lakota Odyssey
An outstanding narrative, exceptionally well written. Highly recommended to anyone interested in Native American history aswell as the challenges confronting reservation life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling...
Perhaps, one of the more intriguing ways to view history is through the sequential generations of family. With this device, history becomes personal, it has essence, it is more than places, dates, and outcomes.Joe Starita accomplishes exactly this with The Dull Knifes of Pine Ridge. One can't help but be pulled into the story through the disarming capacity of empathy.

Though tragic, it is also a story of perseverance and the unconditional commitment to freedom. It is the absolute refusal to lie down. The Lakota, like all Native Americans, were caught in the buzz saw of Manifest Destiny.A new nation, built on the concept of freedom, explicitly and categorically denied it to the people it found.

Starita has chosen an exemplary family to share this history. They lived it and live it still. I don't agree with every author assumption and spotted a faulty premise or two, but this in no way changes the fact that The Dull Knifes of Pine Ridge is required reading for anyone with an interest in the Native American story. It is a 5 star reading experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Priceless
I have read countless family sagas and this is one of the best! I am surprised this novel did not receive more credit. Also liked the vintage photos and quotes.
It begins with Chief Dull Knife, legendary leader of the northern Cheyenne, and tells of his time during the 600 mile Cheyenne Long Walk which absolutely brought me to tears. This section covers many of the Cheyenne and Lakota battles as well as Custer and Fetterman, and on into Wounded Knee. There are intriguing stories about Red Cloud, Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, and many others.
The saga also covers Dull Knife's children and grandchildren who settled on the Pine Ridge rez or Lakota nation. George Dull Knife toured Europe with Buffalo Bill Cody and I loved the funny tales; the Sioux ride their first and last carnival ride, one warrior battles an ape, and the Lakota bet a buffalo can whip a royal bull. On the more serious side you learn the cruel truth about civilization; Indian schools, allotments, and how terrible life was and still is on the Pine Ridge Indian Rez.
Many of Dull Knife's grandchildren served in American wars such a World War 1 and Vietnam; the stories revealed here are interesting and it is sad many Native American war tales are overlooked in schools, books, and movies.
I recommend this book for anyone interested in history, Cheyenne and Lakota life, and family sagas. I found myself laughing at some of the stories but crying through many parts. The author really brought to life the hard ships the Cheyenne and Lakota faced but also the valiant pride these people long forgotten by many honored. It is really hard for someone now-a-days to understand and sad because pride is a thing of the past. Reading his work I could almost see brave warriors taking bullets so that their starving women and children might escape the soldier's cruelty.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sad litany of broken promises
While most readers who have read any books about the plight of the American Indians will find little that is surprising in this extended family history the book is still important as a reminder of the history of broken promises, terrible policies and callous, often brutal treatment that our government has subjected the Indians to over literally centuries. This personal history evokes the pain suffered by families forcably seperated, by children starved and cultural traditions trampled and in some cases even outlawed!

4-0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking, but excellent reading
I found this book among a box of old books that were left behind in a basement. Because of my Cherokee heritage, I was compelled to read The Dull Knifes of Pine Ridge. And now, I'm glad I did. It is heartbreaking to read how the white man treated the Indian and everything that was done to them. This book tells of events that took place and aren't at all very pretty, especially in the Viet Nam era. If The Trail of Tears was found to be an enjoyable read, then you must read this story about the Lakota Indians. I enjoyed every page. ... Read more
