Product Description
The internationally acclaimed story of Hannah's Heirs now resumes in this updated paperback edition with the discovery in June 1995 of Hannah's gene--now known to account for the majority of mutations causing early onset familial Alzheimer's disease--and the equally important identification of the major genetic risk factor rendering increased susceptibility to the more frequently occurring late-onset Alzheimer's. 30 illustrations. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Most disappointing
The cover of this book gave me reason to expect that it would focus on the story of a family afflicted with Alzheimer's disease and the transmission of the disease through the generations.Instead, the majority of the book reads like a gigantic journal article. The author (a doctor) throws in a mere smattering of human interest here and there, but it's simply not enough to make the story interesting.I am not incapable of reading scientific writing, but page after page of it, as if it were a story in itself, is incredibly tedious.

4-0 out of 5 stars Terryfying, But Fascinating
I consider this to be one of the scariest books I have ever read--terrifying becaust it is true. The people in this family are afflicted with an autosomal (not sex-linked) dominant gene for early-onset Alzheimer's Disease.I can imagine few things more nightmarish than growing up in a family in which you fear that you could start losing your mental faculties at age 42--as many of your relatives already have.

The scientific research and family genealogical history that made this book possible are fascinating to read about. This is a thoroughly riveting book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best in genetics of the German Shepherd Dog
This book is the best on the topic of genetics of the German Shepherd Dog.A must have for any breeder and a great book for any lover of the breed.Easy to read and understand.I have owned this book for a number of years and purchased other books on the topic of dog genetics but this is the book that I find myself picking up for the answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone thinking about breeding.
If you are new to the breed or old this book is a bible for breeders.Even if you are into another breed this book is very good for it covers alot that is not breed specific. There is so much information in this bookone is always going back over it.No german Shepherd breeder should bewithout this in thier library.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST information available to the serious breeder!
Although his earlier version (1970's version) of this book was excellent, and probably the best for it's era, this version is excellent! With up to date information from various countries around the world, this book gives a non-biased background of the genetics behind controlled breeding of Quality German Shepherd Dogs.He provides avenues for further education on any one point in his book, however, I find that all information provided by Willis is sufficient in making educated decisions in any good breeding program. A must for any serious breeder, and a book that will fast become "impossible to get". Robert Frischke KAHREN KENNELS

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive scholarly work on German Shepherd genetics.
Geneticist and German Shepherd breed devotee Malcolm B. Willis, Ph.D. is the acclaimed author of the definitive work, The German Shepherd Dog: A Genetic History. With his comprehensive explanations of genetic principles, Willis details the genetics of reproduction, behavior, hip dysplasia, and other inheritable diseases of the German Shepherd dog. This book is an essential addition to every breeder's library. It is also a remarkably educational resource for anybody who is committed to fully understanding the genetic history of the breed and preserving its future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information for GSD enthusiasts as well as breeders.
When a little fuzzball draws you in with his big puppy eyes, then gallops your way and leaps up to lick you in the face, the check is as good as signed. That's why I wanted to read this book BEFORE picking my next pup.As Willis points out in his book, not all fuzzballs are alike. Some are simply better equiped in temperment, health and intelligence. The book is packed with pictures and descriptions of famous German Shepherds from around the world, and provides an opportunity for dog breeders and owners to make responsible choices in selecting their own fuzzballs.Willis details the genetic faults of the breed, and even identifies which dogs tend to carry those traits, so you can study pedigrees before you make an ill-fated purchase. The only problem with the book, besides the price (which is daunting, though probably worth it considering the investment you will make in your new dog) is that Willis assumes too much knowledge of genetics in the beginning of the book. But if the reader consults a dictionary or encyclopedia at those early passages, then the rest should be fairly easy to grasp. Also, the book could use an update since more recent studs and bitches which are NOT found in this book are currently lining the pedigrees of today's fuzzballs.I've just started searching for my own fuzzball a month ago, but I already know more about the breed than 80% of the breeders I've talked to thanks to Willis's book ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Text
This is a good book for someone with a sound grasp of Mendelian genetics, familiarity with molecular genetics, and some experience with population genetics who wants to step up their understanding two or three levels. The math is at the level of a graduate course in genetics, but not too theoretical, and Weir points out where some of the modelling gets lost in the weeds.

Parts of the book are a tough slog, not because of any flaw in the book, but because it compares allelic, gametic, and population frequencies with recessive and multiallelic traits. Which makes for some painful reading, but the reader will be left with an appreciation of how often genetics papers ignore common scenarios that would make their results ambiguous. And if someone wants to do higher order statistical analysis, this is where they need to go to see how variables are calculated. This is crucial, because many of these variables are fairly similar, but havedifferent sets of assumptions.

Reading this book requires constant flipping of pages back and forth because nothing is repeated. By the time I was finished, the pages were falling out. This book could be four times as large, and if it were in a larger format, it would benefit from extensive footnotes and cross references. Although it would be bulkier and a more reptitive, it would be possible to read it in a linear fashion.

Product Description
The rise of the neutral theory of evolution has aroused a renewed interest in the quantitative approach to population genetics, and the aim of this book is to explain this field to biologists with a limited amount of mathematical expertise. The text concentrates almost entirely on stochastic processes, as these seem to be the greatest source of difficulty amongst non-mathematicians. To enhance the flow of the text some points of detail have been placed in notes and exercises sections at the end of each chapter. The material is extensively referenced and contains many carefully worked examples of mathematical proofs. ... Read more

Product Description
This book covers basic concepts in population and quantitative genetics, including measuring selection on phenotypic traits. The emphasis is on material applicable to field studies of evolution focusing on ecologically important traits. Topics addressed are critical for training students in ecology, evolution, conservation biology, agriculture, forestry, and wildlife management. Many texts in this field are too complex and mathematical to allow the average beginning student to readily grasp the key concepts. A Primer of Ecological Genetics, in contrast, employs mathematics and statistics fully explained, but at a less advanced level as tools to improve understanding of biological principles. The main goal is to enable students to understand the concepts well enough that they can gain entry into the primary literature. Integration of the different chapters of the book shows students how diverse concepts relate to each other. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars it is a quite good book to buy
This book is very good I think because the organisation of the book is nice and concepts in the book are well interpreted by comparing and tips for notice. The not large content of the book is also its advantage, you won't spend much time on the details that can make you more confused when we first get access to evolutionary ecology.
So my recommendation may be helpful if you have some interest on it

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
The book is has an impressively concise and complete at the same time without loosing any explanatory power. As stated, it's a great reference book for concepts or formulas. It seems like everything is just right where it should be.I was a senior undergrad who hadnt taken a statistics or an ecology course before when I used this book and I understood it fine, a testament to the authors writing ability.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
The book arrived in perfect conditions which had me worried since it was paperback and those usually get roughed around in the mail. The book was new as announced and arrived in a timely fashion.

Rarely do you encounter a technical book that you actually enjoy reading cover to cover. Beyond the content, which is superb, structurally this is the best written and organized textbook I've ever used. The prose is clear, clean, concise, while still being comprehensive, with well thought out examples. Anyone doing pop. gen. or eco. gen. should have this on their bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand Textbook
This is a great textbook that could easily be used in any evolution or genetics class. It clearly describes issues like evolution and natural selection in the context of ecological genetics. The examples are interesting and stay in the reader's mind, and the problem sets and online answers are a great resource. This book also serves as a handy reference guide anytime you need to find a formula or definition. It's appropriate for upper level undergraduate courses or introductory graduate courses. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Book, and Well-Written
I bought the Kindle edition of this book, and my only regret is that the author's other books are not currently available on Kindle -- his writing is so good that I would buy them all!

His compassion for his patients comes through clearly, and the book does not 'talk down' to the reader, even though there is a lot of medical terminology; at the same time, he doesn't talk over the reader's head.

I loved the puzzle-solving aspect of this book, and also his description of some of the ethical decisions he must make, such as whether to discuss with a stranger a genetic anomaly (that will affect his life span and health)he can tell the stranger has by looking at him, or whether to bring up the obvious genetic issues the young daughter of an old college friend has.

Again, a fascinating book, one which I will probably re-read (which I usually don't do).I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pathos of a Geneticist
When I picked this book, I was expecting an impersonal account of whatever genes do. But with each story, Dr Marion brings in his human element to the implications of things going wrong at the minute, invisible to the naked eye level.
Pediatric radiologist. Each by itself is a specialisation. Its amazing to see the vast field of medicine accomodate combinations too.
With diagnosis, symptoms of different conditions like spinal muscular atrophy (its updated name) and infant botulism, the author increases the medical databases of general people. After reading the book, you get an idea of how an infants body and inner mechanisms are not in the same stages of development and hence how they handle things differently.
Amniocentesis.

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique and meaningful view of genetics
I could not put Genetic Rounds down once I started reading it. Dr. Marion's story telling abilities captured the essence of each child and family, the difficult ethical dilemmas they faced and his dedication to being together with them in partnership on the journey. It is amazing. I think I absorbed more about genetics in this story than in reading medical articles about genetics. The individuals and their stories are so unique, they are unforgetable. ... Product Description
This important new book provides a useful, easy-to-use guide to the clinical consultation in genetics. It covers the process of diagnosis, investigation, management, and counselling for patients. The authors have used their experience to devise a practical clinical approach to many common genetic referrals, both out-patient and ward-based. The most common Mendelian disorders, chromosomal disorders, congenital anomalies and syndromes are covered. In addition there are chapters on familial cancer and pregnancy-related topics such as fetal anomalies, teratogens, prenatal and pre-implantation diagnosis. The book also provides information on the less common situations, where management is particularly complex, or important genetic concepts are illustrated. Most of the topics fit onto a double-page spread ensuring that the book is an accessible, quick reference for the clinic or hospital consultation. Where available, diagnostic criteria for specific conditions are included as well as contact details for support groups. The book is well-illustrated and has an up-to-date bibliography and glossaries of terms used in genetics and dysmorphology. This accessible book is designed for use by consultants and trainees in clinical genetics, genetic counsellors and paediatricians, particularly those working in paediatric neurology, neonatology or child development. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A perfect tool for the daily genetic consult
This is a perfect book for reference, gives you an idea about what to look for in your patient and the approach section is very useful tool in the daily consult

4-0 out of 5 stars Extensive guide to clinical geneticist
This reference book has provided useful notes for a list of diseases and conditions one may need to look up from time to time. Geneticists would benefit the most, especially in my opinion, ones that have not specifically worked in the clinical field. As mediterrenean folks, we were surprised to find out FMF was left out. Some other common dysmorphic features were not as comprehensive as others. Nevertheless, I think this book is a must in a hospital genetician's library; hence the title "desk reference".

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick Reference to a Wealth of Information
As a desk reference this book is not intended to be a replacement for a textbook on the subject, but to provide a well indexed quick guide to problems likely to confront the clinical worker.

In addition, the clinical worker is likely to find this to be a useful book to share with patients seeding additional information about particular conditions. The ability to show such patients (or their parents) brief descriptions of conditions being discussed is often a help. This is especially true in those cases where diagrams are included that can be shown to illustrate the condition being discussed.

This is the first edition of this book. It is remarkable in that so much information is included. It is such a useful concept that I expect there will be future editions over time and that it will become one of the standards kept on everyone's desk.

How genetic engineering threatens seeds, and the stories of those working to save this precious environmental resource

Seeds are at the heart of the plant systems that provide us with food, energy, medicine, and even the air we breathe. Their power to adapt will be crucial to our ability to cope with a changing climate. In Uncertain Peril, environmental journalist Claire Hope Cummings examines how agriculture has changed dramatically, how corporate control of seeds undermines their biological integrity and natural abundance, and how communities can maintain seeds as the common heritage of all humanity and preserve the regenerative capacity of the earth.

5-0 out of 5 stars A clarion call to sustain a healthy food legacy
I'm struck by how seeds and the preservation of seeds have defined value in cultures through the ages.Bioneers and seeds of change brought this concept back to modern consciousness over a decade ago. What Cummings has done is masterfully and passionately focused awareness on just how fragile our legacy is.Her writing is deeply informative and evocative. The words from the end of the Epilogue continue to captivate me."Seeds are messengers from the past. They are an embodiment of hope for the future...We can be guided by the way of the seed and by knowing that what we do to seeds, we do to ourselves. One thing is certain: the future of seeds is in our hands."
Bravo, Ms. Cummings!

5-0 out of 5 stars From a Farmers point of view
I used to work for Monsanto and thought they were wonderful to work for. i got caught up in their science. as i have got older and switched from conventional to organic farming i have been keenly made aware of just what is going on. Seeing my soil come back to life, diversity in wildlife, beneficial insects and microlife is short of a religous experience. to think i was an addict and they were my dealer!!! what corporations are doing with seeds, chemicals and our freedom to farm is true. Anyone denying this, is either bribed, employed by them, or they own lots of stock and could care less what the agenda is. as our culture transformed from a rural to mostly urban one it's easy to see how most people have tuned out what is going on with their food. what a shame. Claire wrote this book with passion, i read it with passion. God, i wish i could meet her. Claire, thank you for this book, great job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Food Supply Is At Risk - Uncertain Peril Is The Warning
As our western civilization "evolves" our connection with our food supply has diminished to the point where the basic understanding of farming and the processes involved has diminished. One thing we all know despite this is that food comes from seeds. But what if seeds were no longer available or if they were only viable with the purchase of support chemicals? What would happen if the world's food supply were contaminated with a corporate gene that eliminated our ability and right to save seeds? Bob Dylan wrote in one of his apocalyptic songs from the seventies "One day even your home garden will be against the law". This is what is happening in the name of "Feeding the World", the mantra of the corporations bringing us "better living" with genetic engineering. But so far there has not been a genetically engineered crop that has benefited anyone but corporations like Monsanto and Syngenta.Claire has weaved together a compelling call to action and a succinct report of thedirection agriculture is heading.I recommend that you arm yourself with this book and prepare to defend.

5-0 out of 5 stars greenhorns to the issue?- This is your textbook
Young Farmers, urban food activists, locavores and Kingsolverites--those of us who are newly concious about the food we put in our mouths, and the landscape behind that food--> If we've arrived on the scene in recent years, then we never really knew agriculture pre-biotech.

We have learned too late of the gross contamination of our food supply, the 70% of processed foods on our super market shelves that have GMO ingredients, the vast plantations of GMO soybean in Brazil, the open air testing of experimental pharma-drugs and GMOs in Hawaii, the ever more hyperbolus corn fields in our own midwest. These tragedies of monoculture are the result of a deliberate process carried out before our time, and before our involvement in the food system.

While a lot of these biotech developments occurred before my generation got involved in sustainable agriculture, the approval for these technologies and the intellecutal property rights precedents occured at the highest levels. There is a wonderful French film that just came out about Monsanto ( The World According to Monsanto) with a clip of George Bush senior touring the Monsanto research facility and saying "Well if you have any trouble with the FDA let me know, we're in the DEREG business."

With current talk about the 'spike' in food prices funding development for yet another round of "Roundup Ready" crops, with unprecedented hunger pangs, and the recent focus of the Gates Foundation on Biotech for Africa-- what better time to learn what we can from the corrupt history of the Agro-bioscience industry. False promises, superweeds, hegemony and monoculture, lets stop the proliferation of GMO agriculture as soon as we can.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading for Educators concerned with the Science, Food & Health
Uncertain Peril provides a vivid description of the crisis at hand for our food system and the seed source that provides the foundation for all of the ecosystems we depend upon. Claire Cummings describes the crisis in a way that allows for understanding and action, the two ingredients that offer the only solution at hand. The book covers the current socio-political landscape surrounding genetic materials in a fair and factual manner. The book should be on the reading list of all citizens and particularly educators, high school through college, concerned with the interface of science, food, farming and health. ... Read more

Product Description
Within the past two decades, new methods created by molecular genetics and cytogenetics as well as quantitative genetics have greatly enlarged the amount and quality of genetic information available in domestic mammals. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Well-Written and Very Useful Book
This book is the first I know that is exclusively devoted to population association studies, and as such is very well-written. Dr Foulkes takes care to describe key association concepts very carefully and in details. Plus the approach is very pragmatic and application-oriented. This is very useful since the author shows how to inplement key ideas through R-code.

The field of assopciation studies started some time ago and is still expanding, and there is a real lack of good textbooks in the field. This book fills a very important gap. It covers all the latest developments in the field and looks beyond with important multivariate topics such as CART and principal components. I recommend it very highly!

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid text with interest beyond statistical genetics
Applied Statistical Genetics with R For Population-based Association Studies is by Andrea S. Foulkes
of the University of Massachusetts and is meant for an audience with some understanding of both genetics and statistics, though the level of understanding in both areas need not be extensive. The statistical knowledge required would be covered in one or two undergraduate courses and an introductory genetics course would be helpful.Lacking this background, the first three chapters provide a well written review of the required knowledge and also provide extensive references for further reading.Indeed, the entire book provides plenty of references for further study of all of the topics covered.

For genetic studies, this book covers several basic topics, including linkage disequilibrium, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, and haplotypic phase as well as methods for identifying associations between single genetic polymorphisms and a trait.Subjects that are not covered include family studies, population genetics or gene expression analysis.

One of the great strengths of this book is the presentation of topics that while relevant to genetics studies are also relevant to the general statistical reader. There are very good chapters and sections on missing data, multiple comparisons, cross-validation, the EM algorithm, classification and regression trees [CART] and random forests as well as several Bayesian techniques. While some statistical notation and formulas are used throughout, each topic is presented in clear fashion that is understandable to the less mathematically inclined.Algorithms are laid out in a step-by-step fashion that makes topics such as the EM algorithm and Gibbs sampling understandable.Indeed, this is one of the few statistical texts, beyond the most basic introductory texts, that can be read cover-to-cover.If not for the extensive use of examples with a genetics focus, I would recommend this as a general text on advanced statistics.

This book makes extensive use of the freely available R programming language and publicly available data sets, with many worked-out examples throughout the text.A web site provides download-able data sets and code. While there is an appendix that introduces the R language, some working familiarity with R beyond this text will be necessary for most readers.

In all, I found this to be a very readable introduction to the use of statistics in genetics. It would make a very good text for an introductory course on statistical genetics.I also recommend this book to the general statistics reader because of its very readable presentation of some complex statistical topics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant review and mini-text
I used this book to review for the USMLE step 1 a couple of years ago.At that time, there was no single good medical genetics review book that could be read in a short time, and I encountered this at the bookstore. Not only did this book help me review the genetics portion in a brief amount of time, it was also surprisingly well written and an absorbing read.It has since become a part of my library.I think this book will be best used by medical students who are in a short genetics course and are in a time crunch, students reviewing for the USMLE Step 1, or a clinician who wants a brief review of medical genetics.Of course, a layperson with an interest in the field should also find this book interesting.I hope Dr Westman will continue to write newer editions of this little gem of a book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good concise review of medical genetics
I dont think this book is supposed to be a full-fledged textbooks. It reads like a very concise textbook, yet is the size of your average High-Yield or BRS book.In fact, this a great reference to brush up or learn, with moderate depth every major part of medical genetics.I really enjoyed reading this. Its quite up to date... I wish this author would write a bigger version!

2-0 out of 5 stars very basic
doesn't contain very much depth.i recommend consulting a more detailed genetics book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Medical Genetics
Medical Genetics For the Modern Clinician by Judith Westman is a small concise summary of Genetics. It's 200 pgs are packed with information including plenty of clinical cases.Definitely for someone already with a basic knowledge of Genetics.End of chapter multiple choice questions help to study for the boards. For a introduction to Genetics or detail on certain conditions another Genetics book should be consulted.

4-0 out of 5 stars Medical Genetics
I have found that this text encompasses a large volume of genetic material and presents the essentials for use by medical professionals and students. Although this is not a text to recommend for genetics courses, it is a valuable resource to gain information of the current trends in genetic medicine, with very useful USMLE-style questions. The one criticism that this book lacks is that a few more pages could be added for summarys of chapter material, and for more comparisons. Overall a great book for medical students who do not want to become geneticists. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars understandable population genetics
Thanks so much for this book! I have been studying population genetics for about 2 years now and was still confused on some of the concepts. Thanks to Dr. Hamilton's book "Population Genetics", I have finally been able to make sense of some complex topics. The book completes examples, puts in the little details often overlooked in other text books, and explains how to interpret genetics data using free simulation software. ... Read more
