A textbook.
If you need this for a class, then it is your best friend. I personally think that the book is interesting to read by itself, but I'm a nerd.

strong explanation of evolution
The authors give a strong explanation of biological evolution, from its earliest unicellular origins to the present. Much fossil and DNA evidence is summarised. Including recent findings in fossil digs from the 90s.

They point out that many so-called missing links are not. For relations between genera, families, orders and classes, the intermediate forms ("links")are often present in the fossil record. Amongst the cases cited are the origins of whales and sea cows.

More generally, the book has numerous instances where transitions found in fossils are explained in terms of limbs or bones developing, or suchlike, so that you can clearly see how one fossil is the evolutionary ancestor of another later fossil. As in the early fishes. Where those who developed jaws with bones were then more able to hunt other fishes; a strong evolutionary advantage. While the move onto land is shown in fossils that had fins with muscles. This allowed for propulsion above water, where the original advantage was to let the fish move around under water, in mud or vegetation.

Geology is also emphasised. Often giving rise to various ore and petroleum bodies found today. Plus plate tectonics is shown to account for the continental drifts and the breakup of Gondwanaland. ... Read more

Awful book/ textbook
Do you want to know how good/usefull this book/textbook is? Let me to put it this way. 3 books in one book.In many cases you are on your own. The author tried to put the history of geology in a tiny book. This is going to be a very usefull book/textbook "IF AND ONLY IF" you have a PhD in geology with more than 50 years of teaching experience OR you are a geology expert with more than a 100-years of experience.

international edition
I couldn't justify spending $170 on a paperback this small. I bought the international edition for $45 and it seems to be exactly the same except the cover art is different. I have been using it all semester without a problem.

H. Geol. Book
Arrived just before school started. Just ordered it during a Bad time of the year (Christmas) so I had to wait for it a little longer. But when it arrived it was is good condition with a little water damage but its on the corner so it effects none of the print at all.

Its a great read! - Well written
This book "Historical Geology" is well put together.I for one will follow this authors work in later semesters if given the option.
I found this to be not only well organized, but also entertaining in a sense that helps me comprehend and retain what I have read.

Generally good.
Not as high level as I would have liked, but generally a good book.Pictures are black and white, not so good for geology.

It's a good start
I am interested in Geology, so I figured this book would be a good basis in learning this particular subject.
So far, I think this will work!!

Just the facts, maam.
This and others in the self-teaching series provide the reader with an overview of the topic.It highlights and essentials and makes it easy to understand the basics.There are no frills, but who needs them? This is great for students who need to know just the facts, maam.

Good for beginners
I taught a course that used this book along with a few others. At first I thought this book was overly simplistic, but upon further review, and numerous positive comments from my students (teachers who were working to get certification credits actually), I can now see that this book has a lot of valuable geologic information in an easy to read format. This book presents a lot of important geologic topics without getting overly technical, which is good for beginning students, those that are simply curious (like the other review by a rockhound) or those that want a quick brush-up. At the end of each chapter there are quizes to help the reader review the material. This is helpful for some, but not for others (in which case you can always ignore them). For the class I taught we used this book in conjunction with The Earth System, Second Edition which I liked better but many of the students found difficult to read.

Perfect Condition
I got the product in a reasonable amount of time, and it was in the new condition they said it would be in.

Bad Seller!!!!
Paid for the book and never recieved it. Purchased this book for a class that I was enrolled in and guess what it never came. Not a single reply as to where or when it would be shipped. I tried to contact the seller multiple times without any reply's on where the book was. I have submitted for my money back from Amazon and hopefully I can get it back. Would not ever recommend this seller!!!!

A Useful Tool
The labs I've done so far have all been very helpful in reinforcing concepts I've been learning in class.The labs are often very challenging and sometimes details needed for answering questions aren't given, but for the most part the instructions are clear.I find, though, that I often need instruction and guidance from the professor in doing the work, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend this book for self-instruction. ... Geology is fun
Since my husband and I were going to be spending a week in Pennsylvania, I brought the Roadside Geology book of PA along.I was interested in understanding the local geology and was happy to discover three fossil sites within the area we stayed.I was able to look at a Triassic fossil dinosaur footprint at one site and find some Devonian fossils in another.The Roadside Geology book is great for someone who only has a short period of time to explore a particular area.I hope they'll put one out for every state (particularly Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia...hint hint hint.) ... A great geology book, if a little dated...
This is a terrific geology text - and it's written from a perspective of a Western U.S. geologist, so it has a focus on orogenies past the Appalachian (lulz). The only thing I can say with respect to the technical accuracy is that it was written by Cooper right around the time some of the radiometric dating techniques became available, so some of the ages don't match if you compare it to a modern text. Also, because of it's vintage, it's "less glamorous" than a text with 4-color diagrams and tons of color photos. This doesn't prevent it from being an outstanding overview of the geological sciences and a terrific value. This is an exceptionally bad book
I bought this book without very high expectations, and I was still disappointed. It is more a pamphlet than book, only 103 text pages of very large print. Rather than offering either a scientific discussion of how the science of geology relates to the Bible, or a scholarly study of how geological events are presented in the Bible, Billy Caldwell throws up his arms and proclaims that nobody knows.

Really, that is his only contribution. Page 12, "God's ways are beyond our ways and it is impossible for us to understand His decisions and methods." Billy cites Romans 11:33 here, which is a consideration of why God allowed sin to exist. This is a clear example of the level Billy has studied the Bible.

Consider these verses;

Psalm19:
1The heavens are telling of the glory of God;
And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.
2 Day to day pours forth speech,
And night to night reveals knowledge. (New American Standard Bible)

Psalm 85:11 reads, "Truth springs from the earth; and righteousness looks down from heaven" (NASB). The Hebrew word for truth, emet, basically means "certainty and dependability."

The Bible demands believers to acknowledge that God is truthful and forthright.The Bible demands that believers acknowledge the physical creation as an honest testament to God's existence and nature.

Instead, Billy offers up the long discredited "appearance of age" argument. This is the notion that God made the Universe old and worn. It isn't really old- it just looks old (pg. 13-14, 17).

Romans 1:18-23 asserted that the physical universe is a true testament to God's nature.

18. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
19. because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.
20. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.
21. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22. Professing to be wise, they became fools,
23. and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.

The "wise" in verse 22 referred to astrologers in particular, and verse 23 is reference to the worship of Roman, and Egyptian gods. Some creationists like to falsely claim these verses refer to "Darwinists," but of course there were no evolutionary scientists 2,000 years ago.

So the "appearance of age" is antiscriptural.

Billy also tells us that "If you took an element and purified it completely, it would probably shine. God is so pure, He shines with atomic love." (pg. 15)

That is the level of Billy's science. Just one counter example will do- carbon. Pure carbon can either be solid black as graphite, or clear as diamond. Neither "shine" at any rate. Billy also claims that there are dinosaurs alive today, citing those two great scientists Kent Hovind (currently in jail for tax evasion) and Carl Baugh (pg. 19).Both Hovind and Baugh claimdoctorates from unaccredited mail-order "colleges." By the end of the pamphlet, Billy is frothing that Satan was the inspiration of science, and that demons cause disease. Maybe Billy played too much Dungeons and Dragons and he thinks he needs a 10th level Clerical spell instead of an antibiotic.

I will use this book in the future as an example of how ignorant creationists are and why they will sadly stay that way.

Fairy tale geology
What the author of this book has apparently done is scour the bible for references to geology.He then proposes very imaginative yet completely ad hoc and YEC friendly interpretations of these passages in light of what he deems geological facts as have been determined today. It is his belief that in doing so, the case for his god, the intelligent designer of the universe, and biblical inerrancy is very well made.

Nothing could be further from the truth.To put it mildly, this book is nothing more than a shameless and feeble attempt to hammer natural history into what would be a painfully strained consonance with a literal interpretation of the bible (kinda like saying 5+3 = ice cream).It is so obviously contrived that you have to want to believe this stuff to accept it as fact.There is quite honestly nothing of value here.

To make matters worse, the book is very poorly written.It literally reads as though authored by a college freshman.About the only redeeming aspect of this book, an inevitable fallout of its shortness on content, is its length.At 108 pages, it is a very quick read.If you are like me, however, you will find yourself leafing through much of it.As can be expected of any book on geology from a YEC perspective, it becomes very predictable very quickly.

Creationist pap.
If the bible is the inerrant word of god, why does the bible contradict itself? In Genesis 1, god creates plants before he creates people. In Genesis 2 (verse 5), he creates people before he creates plants. A major contradiction, and hardly the 'inerrant word of god' the author claims.
I'd give this nonsense zero stars if it were possible.

Christian GEO-GARBAGE in print
Dark ages geology by an unintelligent true-believer searching for proof of the monotheistic 'intelligent' designer.
Would you hire a so-called 'certified geologist' named Billy for academia, private sector work or public employment if he thought that the earth was only a few thousand years old and creationist geology 'proves' that the bible is THE word of god? Nope. And you would not read nonsense written by the same misguided individual either. Books like these are useful for science readers (of all ages) to critique so that this flavor of Christian idiocy does not have its way with the minds of American youth.
That's not to say that all Christians believe in pap like the material in this book.
Billy needs to get a REAL geology education.

Not worth the low download price
I have no religious bias against the author, and have no vested interest in one account of creation over the other. But here's what you need to know:
This guy cannot write. It's TERRIBLE. I'm not even talking about the content yet either. "PhD" is listed after his name in the book; I strongly suspect that this "PhD" is of the mail order variety. If you are a college student hoping to compare and contrast different ideas about Earth origins, I suggest going anywhere but here.

The book starts of as a sermon, which can be offputting. He also admits that his ideas are entirely speculation based on his bible reading and some geology reading. Sounds like a first year college student to me, and a poor one at that. Longwinded and dreadful. The bibliography reveals someone totally unfamiliar with academia.
I want to know where Mr. Caldwell 'earned' his PhD and how much it cost.
