4-0 out of 5 stars not the "most distinctive textbook in its class"
A nice point about this book is how it gives the reader access to McGraw's website and the online resources that the casual vistor without the book does not have.

The blurb on the back cover says it is the "most distinctive textbook in its class". I'm not sure about that. It's certainly well written, accompanied by some gorgeous photos of places with neat geology, like the Grand Canyon. But "Essentials of Geology" by Lutgens et al also goes over basically the same material, as an example of a similar text. No doubt they could also claim that theirs is the most distinctive text.

Product Description
With its unconventional yet highly effective approach, How Does Earth Work? demonstrates the process of science as a vehicle for investigating physical geology. Smith and Pun connect readers to the evidence behind the facts, instead of reproducing known facts—sparking interest in how science is practiced and how we know what we know. Like geology detectives, readers learn to think through the scientific process and uncover evidence that explains Earth’s mysteries. Chapters open with an essay that places a curious investigator in a realistic field or lab setting to observe and ask questions about geological phenomena. Integrated real-world connections link topics to issues of societal concern or relevant experience to increase appreciation of the value of discovering science; and annotated illustrations with thoughtful descriptions help readers observe the hypotheses presented.
Why Study Earth? Minerals: Building Blocks of the Planet; Rocks and Rock-Forming Processes; Formation of Magma and Igneous Rocks; Formation of Sediment and Sedimentary Rocks; Formation of Metamorphic Rocks; Earth Materials as Time Keepers; Journey to the Center of Earth; Making Earth; Motion Inside Earth; Deformation of Rocks; Global Tectonics:  Plates and Plumes; Tectonics and Surface Relief; Soil Formation and Landscape Stability; Mass Movements: Landscapes in Motion; Streams:  Flowing Water Shapes the Landscape; Water Flowing Underground; Glaciers: Cold-Climate Sculptors of Continents; Shorelines: Changing Landscapes Where Land Meets Sea; Wind: A Global Geologic Process; Global Warming: Real-time Change in the Earth System.

5-0 out of 5 stars Geology in plain English
This book is a simple way for non-Geology speaking people to discover the marvels of the Geological world. It introduces you to the basics of geology and gives diagrams and examples explaining the geology of the volcanic Hot Spot that is Hawaii. Each island has its own chapter, complete with simple maps and images to match the explanation. Great guidebook if you are a Geologist or are just interested in going to Hawaii to see the volcanoes.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for people interested in geology
I love this series, and this one did not disappoint me. In case you are interested in geology and you are going to Hawaii, I can really recommend this one. And who doesn't want to know more about the geology of these islands, especially when you go to the Big Island and visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The only improvement I can recommend is to have clearer maps with clearer indications of points of interest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for a novice like me
I am fascinated with all things Hawaii, particularly the geological features, the volcanoes, etc. I love thinking about how they form, and how in such a short time in the planet's history, they will disappear forever. I know very little about geology, having never taken a course on it in college or reading any books about it. I found this incredibly interesting, understandable, and comprehensive. I've also found some new places to go and can't wait to bring the book with me on my next trip. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars are that the pictures, which are very useful, would be more useful if they were in color.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for "what is it?" people visiting Hawaii
On my first visit to the islands, I realized that everything you see evolved from the lava that's usually associated with visits to the Big Island. But each of the islands had the same fiery volcanic past - and it's often very hidden amongst the magnificient landscapes that we all see. What makes black sand? Why is the dirt red? Why is Molokai rectangular? Why is Haleakala Crater so colorful? These and so many other questions are answered in chapters of general informaiton as well as a tour format using popular highways and byways.

This edition (the others in the series are superb as well) does a great job of describing what you're seeing in the widely varied landscapes of the Hawaiian Islands. The author describes the natural history of the elements of the island seen as you drive about, mostly describing the landmasses from a geologic perspective. If you have the slighest interest in how the islands were formed and how they evolved into what you see today, make sure you have this book before you leave. It's very readable, there's no need to have a geology background!

5-0 out of 5 stars tourism at its best
I love this book.I learned about different types of lava, I can impress my girlfriend with my geological knowledge while we vacation. It is a guide book which will help you at specific locations to identify the geology you are looking at.The beginning gives a good explanation of the general geological principles which apply to Hawaii: volcanology and plate techtonics. ... Product Description

It’s about how we know what we know. How Does Earth Work?  covers the traditional breadth of introductory geology topics, but takes the non-traditional and highly effective approach of emphasizing conceptual learning of process rather than rote memorization of facts. Questions drive the development of the concepts:  As with science itself, there are no answers without first asking questions.  As a result, the concepts are introduced and developed in context ("If this is true, then why...?”), which facilitates deeper exploration of and linking between concepts. Illustrations bear much of the weight of explanation; they are as simple as possible, thoughtfully annotated, and paired wherever possible with photos of the concept manifest in nature.

Why Geology? Minerals: Building Blocks of the Planet; Rocks and Rock-Forming Processes; Formation of Magma and Igneous Rocks; Formation of Sediment and Sedimentary Rocks; Formation of Metamorphic Rocks; Earth Materials as Time Keepers; Journey to the Center of Earth; Making Earth; Motion Inside Earth; Deformation of Rocks; Global Tectonics — Plates and Plumes; Tectonics and Surface Relief; Soil Formation and Landscape Stability; Mass Movement: Landscapes in Motion; Streams: Flowing Water Shapes the Landscape; Water Flowing Underground; Glaciers: Sculptors of Continents, Recorders of Climate Change; Shorelines: Changing Landscapes Where Land Meets Sea; Wind: A Global Geologic Process.

A comprehensive reference for geology professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars geology book
This book is very helpful and interesting. I ordered it used and it arrived on time and in almost perfect condition.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mari H.
We requested & paid for this to be delivered in 2-3 days. This book took over 2 weeks to be delivered. Since it was a text book for school, my son ended up purchasing the book from another company. I emailed the seller several times with no response. They didn't have a return address label on the package, so I have no way of contacting them to get our money back. Amazon "Market" does not stand behind the sellers, and doesn't offer any support. We will never buy from Amazon again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic Geology Explained
A good overview of basic geology, with plenty of illustrations and charts.Although well written, it assumes some prior knowledge of chemistry and physics, but then at times becomes oddly "dumbed-down."
Still, it is thorough and fascinating and should be a required subject for all high school students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great content - not a durable book, though
Okay, let me get a few things out of the way up front. First off, I generally hate textbooks. I've been in college 6 years and counting, and it's fair to say that most textbooks (regardless of subject) are written and edited in a very clueless fashion. Second, though I have many personal interests in the realm of science (quantum mechanics, string theory, and so on), it's often a major chore to study 100-level science at a university. Doubly so if it's a scientific subject you have no interest in - which in my case would be geology.

Back to the topic at hand, this book counters all of what I just said. This is an outstanding textbook by any standard. I'd even recommend it for non-students who have an interest in geology and earth science. Combined with a good instructor, this book makes an excellent resource and a surprisingly enjoyable read. I had virtually no personal interest in geology going into the class, but this book communicates a good deal of practical knowledge as well as just plain interesting trivia.

I do have some issues with the book in a physical sense. Content-wise, /How Does Earth Work/ is fantastic. But the design of the book is troublesome. It's large, unwieldy, and the cover is very flimsy. A book this size should really be hardcover, because the glossy pages are just too vulnerable to folds and tears even with careful use. I take good care of my books, and don't just randomly slop them into my backpack. Even with all my efforts to keep the book in tact, it already has minor creases in the cover, bent corners on pages, and other slight damage. This is after just two weeks of class, folks.

The book looks great, with all the color photos and such... But the physical design of it is not at all realistic for college use. Make peace with the fact that you're not going to be able to re-sell this book for near new price at the end of the semester. Beyond that, /How Does Earth Work/ is a great resource, and one of the very few college books I'd highly recommend to students and non-students alike. ... Read more

my other books), but the publishing date and lack of update
after Mandelbrot and Per Bak changed the way we looked at geology
from drainage basin's to earthquake probability distributions.
The physical model of Per Bak called the sand pile model

Today geology is like times series analysis:
before and after Mandelbrot...
The result ismuch like geology before and after crustal plate dynamics.
Two revolutions in thought in one generation.
