Description:
Accidental blast wave generation and propagation in the surroundings poses severe threats for people and property. The prediction of overpressure maxima and its change with time at specified distances can lead to useful conclusions in quantitative risk analysis applications. In this paper, the use of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code CFX-5.6 on dense explosive detonation events is described. The work deals with the three-dimensional simulation of overpressure wave propagation generated by the detonation of a dense explosive within a small-scale branched tunnel. It also aids at validating the code against published experimental data as well as to study the way that the resulting shock wave propagates in a confined space configuration. Predicted overpressure histories were plotted and compared versus experimental measurements showing a reasonably good agreement. Overpressure maxima and corresponding times were found close to the measured ones confirming that CFDs may constitute a useful tool in explosion hazard assessment procedures. Moreover, it was found that blast wave propagates preserving supersonic speed along the tunnel accompanied by high overpressure levels, and indicating that space confinement favors the formation and maintenance of a shock rather than a weak pressure wave. ... Description:
This paper presents regional and total deposition measurements in several realistic mouth and throat geometries and demonstrates the effects of intrasubject and intersubject variations in geometry on deposition efficiency. A set of seven geometries that span the range of key dimensions of a larger set of 80 geometries were studied at flow rates of 30 and 90l/min and particle diameters of 3-6.5@mm. The models were obtained using magnetic resonance imaging scans. Gamma scintigraphy and gravimetry were used to determine deposition. The models were subdivided into regions corresponding to the mouth, oropharynx, larynx and trachea. The results indicate that both total and regional deposition exhibit large intersubject differences, but also show some intrasubject difference. A mean equivalent diameter D"m"e"a"n=2V/@pL (where V is mouth-throat volume, L is centerline path length), and corresponding velocity U"m"e"a"n=4Q/@pD"m"e"a"n^2 (where Q is inhalation flow rate) are used as the length and velocity scale in defining a Stokes number, Stk. In addition, an effect on deposition due to flow Reynolds number, Re was noticed. When plotted vs. Stokes number with inclusion of this Reynolds number effect, the total deposition data from all the different geometries collapse onto essentially a single curve, given by: @h=100-100/(11.5Stk^1^.^9^1^2Re^0^.^7^0^7+1) for the parameter range explored, where @h is the percent of inhaled aerosol depositing in the mouth-throat. ... Description:
Large spatial-scale atmospheric aerosol characterization is commonly accomplished from high-speed aircraft platforms using subisokinetic sampling. The aspiration efficiencies in these inlets are commonly determined from the empirical correlation of Belyaev and Levin [1974. Techniques for collection of representative aerosol samples. Journal of Aerosol Science, 5, 325-338] (B&L), though the correlation was obtained from experiments under conditions very different from those encountered during high-speed aircraft sampling. Aircraft inlets are generally thick-walled, often have a blunt-body downstream, operate at a large freestream to sampling velocity ratio, and under conditions of low ambient pressures. The dependence of sampling characteristics on these parameters is studied using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. The CFD calculations show that the anisokinetic inlet sampling characteristics are strongly influenced by the operating conditions and sampler geometry, especially the presence of an aft blunt body. It is observed that these dependencies are not accurately captured by the existing correlations. The presence of even a moderately sized blunt-body aft of a sampling inlet can greatly influence the sampling characteristics of a straight tube inlet. A new correlation is derived based on the CFD simulation results, and this correlation is seen to greatly improve prediction of inlet sampling characteristics considering their geometries. ... Description:
An absence of settlement features during the Central European Corded Ware period (Late Eneolithic, 2900-2300 BC) has been interpreted as a reflection of mobile pastoral subsistence. Recent analyses of the Late Eneolithic archeological context reveal that the Late Eneolithic exhibit evidence of sedentary agricultural activities similar to the Early Bronze Age. Since the archeological analyses are not clear cut, we tested mobility pattern differences between the Late Eneolithic and Early Bronze Age using biomechanical analysis of the tibial midshaft cross-sections. The total sample of the 130 tibiae representing five archaeological cultures was used. The results of the tibial midshaft geometry do not support the hypothesis about different mobility in the Late Eneolithic and Early Bronze Age. This conclusion is supported by nonsignificant differences between the Corded Ware females and the Early Bronze Age females. Higher absolute values for the Corded Ware males should be explained either by stochastic variation or by differing amounts of physical demands despite a generally similar pattern of subsistence of the Late Eneolithic and Early Bronze Age. One of the Early Bronze Age samples, the Wieselburger group, is an exception because the individuals show both reduced overall size and bending resistance of the tibial parameters not only in comparison with the Late Eneolithic but also to the rest of the Early Bronze Age. The results suggest that the behavioral processes which affected the tibial midshaft biology operated during the Late Eneolithic and Early Bronze Age as a mosaic across time and between/within cultures. ... Description:
This research explored students' views of geometric objects through the implementation of a curriculum module that allowed them to explore the relationships between transformational geometry and linear algebra. The majority of the students were middle and secondary mathematics education majors enrolled in a one-semester geometry course that is aimed at prospective teachers. A preponderance of the evidence suggests that the participating students, for the most part, viewed isometries operationally and viewed geometric objects (triangle, etc.) as ''perceived.'' Results also suggest that these two views influenced the students' abilities to understand and to construct geometric proofs in transformational geometry. ... Read more
