Description:
Let S be a set of n points in three-dimensional Euclidean space. We consider the problem of positioning a plane @p intersecting the convex hull of S such that min{d(@p,p);p@?S} is maximized. In a geometric setting, the problem asks for the widest empty slab through n points in space, where a slab is the open region of R^3 that is bounded by two parallel planes that intersect the convex hull of S. We give a characterization of the planes which are locally optimal and we show that the problem can be solved in O(n^3) time and O(n^2) space. We also consider several variants of the problem which include constraining the obnoxious plane to contain a given line or point and computing the widest empty slab for polyhedral obstacles. Finally, we show how to adapt our method for computing a largest empty annulus in the plane, improving the known time bound O(n^3log n) [J.M. Diaz-Banez, F. Hurtado, H. Meijer, D. Rappaport, T. Sellares, The largest empty annulus problem, International Journal of Computational Geometry and Applications 13 (4) (2003) 317-325]. ... Read more

This digital document is a journal article from Journal of Archaeological Science, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
The robusticity of human long bone diaphyses can provide information about habitual behaviour among humans in the past. Mechanically relevant morphological variables include the strength of the diaphysis relative to body size, asymmetry between antimeres, diaphyseal shape, and sexual dimorphism in mechanical properties. This study compares the long bone robusticity of humeri, ulnae, femora and tibiae of Later Stone Age foragers from the forest and fynbos biomes of the southern African Cape region (n=65:32m,33f), dated primarily to between 8000 and 2000 BP. Ecological differences between these biomes dictate variation in the terrestrial resource base, although marine contributions to diet are significant throughout the Cape. Female robusticity remains relatively homogenous between the forest and fynbos biomes, and is characterized by relative symmetry in strength characteristics between paired upper limb elements with antero-posteriorly strengthened diaphyses. This morphology is consistent with shellfish harvesting and the use of digging sticks throughout the Later Stone Age in these regions. Male lower limb robusticity is consistently high in both biomes, suggesting that high levels of terrestrial mobility were characteristic of male subsistence strategies. The forest biome males have higher levels of bilateral asymmetry in upper-limb robusticity than males of the fynbos biome. This morphology may correspond with increased unilateral loading resulting from a higher frequency of use of spear projectiles relative to bows and arrows, and greater exploitation of medium to large sized bovids. ... Description:
Enclosure walls from late IV to II millennium are an important archeological feature in southeast Iberia and south Portugal. These enclosures were considered to be fortified settlements but have more recently been interpreted as the result of general processes of social complexity, symbolism, monumentality, interaction, and space demarcation, among others. Metric and geometric studies associated with architectural concepts are very important tools to analyze prehistoric communities and bring their own perspective to bear. The planning of monuments or even whole settlements includes a more general perception of space, determined by mythology, topography, taking of place, and social hierarchy, among others. This paper analyzes metric and geometric features of the construction of the Los Millares prehistoric settlement (Santa Fe de Mondujar, Almeria, Andalusia), finding that it followed a pre-established geometric and metric design with high accuracy (maximum differences of 10cm). In addition, Los Millares has a very sophisticated monumental barbican entrance that makes an eye-catching statement encapsulating a more general perception of power and space. The labor involved in its construction, the large volume of stones used, its geometric characteristics, metric parameters, and sophisticated design all indicate multiple functionality, including defense, power status, control of resources, and identity. Regular geometric regular shapes, such as circles and ellipses, and concepts of axis symmetry were applied to the design and building of defensive structures with great precision. Furthermore, these findings support the argument that geometry was independently discovered by a wide range of ancient cultures and constitutes one of the most important multicultural symbols in architecture. ... Description:
The main research question in this paper is whether a climbing discourse can be a resource for a school-geometry discourse. The text is based on a 12-year old girl's story from an exciting climbing trip during her summer holiday. The girl uncovers some of her knowledge that had been invisible to her; she is guided to see some relations between her climbing and her understanding of angles. In the beginning, this girl believes her story does not concern angles at all. The tools for uncovering angles in her story are based on different levels of visibility and objects of the climbing discourse combined with different conceptions of space. The girl develops her consciousness about angles as natural elements in her climbing activity and she is guided to see the angle as an object of her climbing discourse. ... Read more

Description:
The present research was carried out with the participation of 106 students in their last grade in Elementary School and revealed certain problems that these students faced in understanding the concept of area measurement. The students in the sample persisted on using measurement strategies that often led to failure. Our research plan comprises a comparison between the strategies for area measurement strategies used by two groups: the experimental group (E.G.) and the control group (C.G.). The experimental group attended a special teaching course, which stressed the conceptual characteristics of the area measurement process. The present research aims at revealing the students' understanding, strategies, and misconceptions regarding area measurement. In addition to that, we examine whether the special teaching course and the use of different measurement tools may lead the two research groups to adopt different measurement strategies. ... Description:
Given a family P={P"1,...,P"m} of m polygonal regions (possibly intersecting) in the plane, we consider the problem of locating a straight line @? intersecting the convex hull of P and such that min"kd(P"k,@?) is maximal. We give an algorithm that solves the problem in time O((m^2+nlogm)logn) using O(m^2+n) space, where n is the total number of vertices of P"1,...,P"m. The previous best running time for this problem was O(n^2) [J. Janardan, F.P. Preparata, Widest-corridor problems, Nordic Journal of Computing 1 (1994) 231-245]. We also improve the known complexity for several variants of this problem which include a three dimensional version - the maximin plane problem -, the weighted problem and considering measuring distance different to the Euclidean one. ... From the author: This review article explores the relationship between the artisans and mathematicians of medieval Islam by examining the earliest historical sources in which such a relationship is depicted, and by focusing especially on the technical language that was used to describe the actual functions of one type of artisan, namely, the architect or master builder. It also argues for the need to draw necessary distinctions between the various types of artisans in order to delineate the exact dimensions of their relationship with theoretical mathematicians. As an example, it demonstrates how a group of early texts could be used to prove the close relationship that had developed between artisans, who were instrument makers, and theoretical mathematicians.
