Geophysical review
This bock is a very good product geophysical work! The contents in this book cover most of the issues that concern 3-D seismic interpretation which is useful for geophysicists involved in oil and gas industry.

Excellent purchase!
The book arrived a little bit late (about 2 days late) than expected but with the condition as described by the seller.

This is how textbooks should be written!
Of the 5 books I own that explain Seismic Refraction principles, Professor Burger is the only one who took the time to walk you thru step-by-step on interpreting a Seismogram.That is the sign of a true teacher and an Author who's not afraid of a little extra effort to help his students practically apply the knowlege.I only wish I lived closer to attend his classes!
I do agree with the others in that an IBM PC version of the diskettes is long overdue, but this book still gets my 5 star rating!

Great Book!
The book is very detailed. Seismic theory and practice is quite cogent and is the strongest area (about half the book). Strong descriptions are given on; Electrical Resistivity, Gravity, and Magnetics. IP, SpontaineousPotential, Magnetotelluric and Telluric and EM Surveying are barelymentioned. Not mentioned are; VLF, Ground Penetrating Radar, Remote Sensingand Radiometrics. I agree with the previous reviewer that it would be niceto have the Xcel spread sheets in both Mac & PC formats.

Exploration of the oceans using geophysical methods has had a profound effect on the way we view the structure of the Earth and its behaviour through geological time. Geophysics has also played a vital role in the search for petroleum and other natural resources lying beneath the seabed.

This volume on marine geophysics has two objectives: to provide a comprehensive review of techniques and to examine what geophysical observations can tell us about the structure and tectonics of the oceans. This is a really good book if you are in to high level data processing. It's not a book for people that are starting in the area of geophysics. The important aspect of this book it's that it has a very detailed explanation of the mathematics involved in data processing.Things like Fourier transforms, designing filters, tomography etc. The material of the book is extremely dens but it's really well explained as long as you remember your calculus and lineal algebra.

What a book!
Incredible applications of linear algebra.This book covers the meat of inverse problems in data analysis.Very clear presentation with many examples.It is a very challenging read nonetheless, even if you have a lot of familiarity with linear algebra.It uses linear algebra in a much different way than what people get exposed to in math courses, focusing on how to solve non-invertible linear systems.Although the title has the word "geophyical" in it, there is no emphasis on the geophysical sciences, it would be useful to anyone doing discrete inverse problems.No prerequisites other than basic linear algebra (matrix arithmetic) and patience. ... Solid Text - Physics Oriented
This is indeed a fine text.I think it is easier to read and work through if one has a strong background in physics (vs. geology) as the methodology is quite similar to the standard approach in physics, i.e. make a conjecture based on some physical intuition, attempt to derive relevant equations from basic principles, and then apply those equations.Geology is typically more descriptive and slightly less rigorous so I would imagine someone approaching this text from a geology dominated background might have a harder time reading it than a person coming to geophysics from physics or math.

Outstanding Text
This is an outstanding text that is widely respected. Before I developed my own notes, I used it in my classes at the University of Oklahoma.Fowler is very clear in her explanations and coverage.The first reviewhere reads like a disgruntled student and does this fine book a disservice.

Hard to read, lacks examples
This book supplies a lot of essential equationsfor geophysics but is terribly boring. The problems at the end of the chapter have few examples to offer any help with the problems.
