5-0 out of 5 stars Greatbook series
My 6 year old daughter is in 1st grade and loves this book series. She catches herself reading longer than the required time for her homework.I'm all for her being interested in reading and not just any reading but good stories for her age.I'm amazed she started reading these chapter books in Kindergarten. She also loves animals. There is also a series for colors (which we also have) and weather (which she's getting for Christmas).

Product Description
In keeping with the state's major demographic upheavals of recent decades, Georgia politics is an interesting--and sometimes volatile--mix of tradition and change. In contrast to the state's rural past, most Georgians now live in cities or suburbs, and more than 40 percent of the population was born outside the state. However, religion and race remain issues that politicians ignore at great peril, and the state still fares poorly in measures of poverty, education, and voter turnout.

Politics in Georgia uses a comparative framework to examine four major topics: the foundations of contemporary Georgia politics, political participation, major political institutions, and selected public policies.

Material new to this edition includes:

- analysis of 2006 state elections

- coverage of trends and events since the book first appeared in 1997

- an examination of the Republican Party's rise in Georgia

- an entirely new chapter on public opinion

- significantly expanded treatment of public policy on such issues as the environment, social welfare, education, transportation, economic development, and public safety

- discussions of major federal court cases that deal with Georgia--and that have set important precedents for the nation

Throughout, Politics in Georgia compares the state with the federal government and the other forty-nine states, as well as with earlier periods of Georgia's political development. The result is a thorough, up-to-date resource on Georgia's dynamic political system. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Read
I had to read most of this book for a college poli-sci class. I found it an interesting insight into Georgia politics that gives a lot of unique facts that can be hard to find elsewhere. Being from Georgia, I found it an interesting read that (for a textbook) read fairly smooth and quickly. If you have to read this for a class it's not too bad but I wouldn't recommend it for just browsing (which is why I gave it four stars). Other than that it's a classic, solid textbook that is still up to date with most of the main characters in Georgia politics. ... Read more

FOR USE IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY. A rack-size edition of the best-selling Printz Honor Book.Amazon.com Review
She has a precocious 3-year-old sister who tends to leave wetnappies at the foot of her bed, an insane cat who is prone toleg-shredding "Call of the Wild" episodes, and embarrassing parentswho make her want to escape to Stonehenge and dance with theDruids. No wonder 14-year-old Georgia Nicolson laments, "Honestly, what is the point?" A Bridget Jones for the younger set, Georgiarecords the momentous events of her life--and they are allmomentous--in her diary, which serves as a truly hilarious account ofwhat it means to be a modern girl on the cusp of womanhood. No matterthat her particular story takes place in England, the account of herexperiences rings true across the ocean (and besides, "Georgia'sGlossary" swiftly eradicates any language barriers).

The author, Louise Rennison, is a British comedy writer and it shows. Whether Georgia is dealing with wearing a bra ("OK, it's a bit on the looseside and does ride up round my neck if I run for the bus"), ponderingkissing and how to know which way to turn your head ("You don't want to bebobbing around like pigeons for hours"), or managing the results of anoverzealous eyebrow-plucking episode ("Obviously, now I have to stay inforever"), she always cracks us up. Georgia struggles with the myriadissues facing teen girls--boys, of course being at the forefront--but shedoes it with such humor and honesty it almost seems like a good time. Thisrefreshingly funny book is ripe for a sequel, which readers will await indroves. (Ages 11 and older). --Brangien Davis ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What's not to like?
There are times when I just HAVE to read something to perk me up, something light and silly and mindless. Louise Rennison's books always do the trick. It doesn't hurt either that this first book in Confessions of Georgia Nicolson series is a winner of Printz Honor, proving that even the silliest story about make-up, boys, and snogging can be written brilliantly. Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snoggingnever takes itself seriously or tries to teach some kind of moral lesson. Instead, its only aim is to provide tons of fun; and the book succeeds at it every time I read it. I do not think there is any point for me to sing this novel any more praise to convince you to give it a try, rather, I will list some quotes here for you to see if Louise Rennison's humor is your cup of tea.

"Thursday, October 15th

I wish I'd never started this snogging business. I feel like I've been attacked by whelks. I can't see Peter anymore. Why is he so keen on seeing me, anyway? I haven't had a chance to say more than two words before I am attacked by the whelks again. I can't go out with him anymore. How can I tell him though?

1 a.m.
I'll make Jas do it.

Friday, October 16th

9 p.m.
I just got Jas to dump Peter for me. I said for her to let him down gently, so she told him that I had a personal problem. He asked what, and she said that I thought I was a lesbian. Cheers, Jas.

It's all around school that I am a lesbian...

Wednesday, December 2nd.

8:30 a.m.
Dashing out of the house, Jas and I almost fell into Mark, waiting by the corner. Jas (big pal) said she had to run to her house first and she would see me at school. I went a bit red and walked on with him walking beside me. He said, "Have you got a boyfriend?"
I was speechless. What is the right answer to that question? I tell you what the right answer is... a lie, that's the right answer. So I said, "I've just come out of a heavy thing and I'm giving myself a bit of space."
He looked at me. He really did have the biggest gob [mouth:] I have ever seen. "So is that no?"
And I just stood there and then this really weird thing happened... he touched my breast!!! I don't mean he ripped my blouse off, he just rested his hand on the front of my breast. Just for a second, before he turned and went off to school.

12:30 p.m.
What does it mean when a boy rests his hand on your breast? Does it mean he has a megahorn? Or was his hand just tired?

4:30 p.m.
Why am I even thinking about this? No sign of Mark (the breast molester) when I got home, thank goodness.

4:45 p.m.
Still, you would think if a boy rests his hand on your breast he might bother to see you sometime.

Got dressed in short skirt, then me and Jas walked up and down to the main road. We wanted to see how many cars with boys in them hooted at us. Ten!! (We had to walk up and down for four hours... still, ten is ten!!!)"

Oh, how I wish I could tell I never participated in this last activity!

5-0 out of 5 stars A hilarious and fun read for all ages based on a STELLAR main character
Ever since I first picked up Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging, this series has been my absolute favorite, no matter what genre I was interested in at the time. The series is about Georgia Nicolson, a 14 year old (at the beginning) British girl who is full of wit. The books are in the format of her diary and chronicle her relationships with her friends, family, and boys and also follow her on her adventures to Scotland, France, and on a camping trip as well as daily life at Stalag 14 (aka school).
While the plot seems pretty basic, teenager being a teenager going through teenage stuff, these books are magic because of Georgia and the other characters. Even with a more complex plot, some books still fall flat because the characters are just so bland. But Georgia is the type of character who is fascinating and endearing. You feel like you know her and when you put the book down you say "Darn, she's not really my friend" and you wish you were back in her world. For 10 books I've laughed with her and I've felt her anger and I've felt her heartbreak. Georgia is truly funny and although she sometimes doesn't view the world as it really is, the way she views it is still very interesting. And then there are the supporting characters. Georgia's best friend loves nature and tells Georgia like it is, her other friend has turned into a Viking princess because of having a (very funny) Swedish boyfriend, her parents are embarrassingly funny, her toddler aged sister is crazy (although this is fiction I did worry about Libby and how she would turn out when she's older) and then there are boys of Georgia's life. All of the characters are so unique and not the stereotypical supporting characters of a teen novel. Each of the characters have personalities that go beyond a simple surface personality (shy and conservative or and outgoing prankster for example). The personalities the supporting characters have seem much more multi-dimensional then they usually seem to go in teen stories. For example, Georgia's best friend Jas has a passion for nature and being outdoors that she shares with her boyfriend (who is the brother of a Sex God). Jas likes to go on nature scouts with her boyfriend and she has a collection of stuffed owls on her bed. Jas will always tell Georgia the truth and not what Georgia just wants to hear. Another friend, Rosie, is the girlfriend of a Swedish exchange student. Because of this she sparks interest of Viking culture in the girls which leads to very interesting Viking inspired dance routines. Even down to Georgia's cat Angus, all the characters are familiar yet have dimensions to them that I've never seen in any other book. I think Rennison's knack for creating characters is really what made this series shine because they are not your average contemporary characters.
Also contributing to the story is the language used. Some of it is British slang which can be confusing for a reader State-side. But Rennison also has made up words that the reader will find infectious once they realize they used a term from the book in their everyday life. I also love how at the back it has a glossary to go over the British terms and the made up ones and the glossary (along with the scales and dance routines) has become a staple throughout the series.
Because the series is so funny and simple but utterly enjoyable, it has been reprinted in multiple languages, has been re-published in multi-book copies with new covers for the adult set, has had a recent cover makeover for the US market, and has recently been made into a movie version. These books have proven to be wildly successful and great for all ages. It's a perfectly suitable series for kids in middle school as the content is pretty mild, but it is also funny enough for adult readers to be entertained. If you're looking for light, fun reading (especially for over the summer or even to read during breaks at work) I definitely would recommend this series. You can read just Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging but I would suggest planning on reading the series in its entirety because you won't want to stop after the first book. 10 books may seem daunting but I promise that these are very quick and enjoyable reads.

5-0 out of 5 stars An endless laugh
This book really embodies the humor of Britain. It is hilarious and a wicked laugh. Georgia really has an endless supply of teenage moments that keep you in stitches, but the real star is her cat Angus who steals the show with his subtle moments. I really enjoyed the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOL gurl stuff!!!;]

This book is very interesting. This is the only thing I'm going to tell you that in case if a boy reads this because this book has like "cuties" I guess and this also has stuff about boys. So there's this girl that has never had a boyfriend and that girl is called Georgia. Her friends are helping her to find one type of guy. It turns out to be that the two boys out of the whole school are the hottest ones there for them. They go to those boys grocery store and they pretend that their going to buy something. Her friends push her into the one that she likes. That boy that she likes already has a girlfriend and that girlfriend that he has Georgia doesn't like her as much. They flirt and the boy that Georgia likes doesn't like his girlfriend no more because he meet Georgia. Georgia finds out that Robbie's girlfriend had stuffed her bra. He asks her right in front of the whole school and she gets embarrassed. Robbie leaves her and goes out with Georgia. Robbie and Georgia get into a fight. They work things out and they kiss. At the end Georgia has a a "small" party but... when her mom says that she's going to a club she doesn't ha ha they just made a huge party for her and i mean a huge a big party. Mostly the people that she didn't even know went to her party. Robbie had gave her, her birthday kiss. OMG this girl had an awsome party ,also because she had dreamed to have a party like this and her parents were so cool. I have to mention this but Georgia is the most luckiest girl ever, her parents are the bomb digity. Well I'm not going to spoil the rest for you ha ha find out.Oh and the last thing i will tell you about this is that this is also similar to the book of "I'd Tell You I Love YOU,But Than I'd Have to Kill You" by:Ally Carter

5-0 out of 5 stars Yeah, that's what it's like
I'd forgotten how it felt to be 14, but Louise Rennison reminded me with this wonderful, laugh-out-loud diary. ... Read more

Did you know that the treasure of the infamous pirate Blackbeard is probably buried on one of the islands off Georgia? And did you know of the dastardly deed of Spanish privateers that provoked the War of Jenkins's Ear?

James Oglethorpe's "noble experiment" to make Georgia a place where debtors got a second chance and slavery and alcohol were banned was destroyed by "malcontents." Plantations producing rice and indigo increased the demand for slave labor, and the rift between the coastal planters and poorer upcountry farmers quickly divided the colony. This division would also complicate Georgia's decision to join the other colonies in the fight for independence. ... Excerpt: The UGA Libraries' collections have always been intertwined with the history of the University of Georgia. As the University expanded and grew in different academic directions, so did the Libraries' holdings reflect that growth. When the Board of Trustees provided for the first professor in 1800, they also established that a library collection be purchased for the sum of one thousand dollars. Unfortunately this collection was destroyed in a fire in 1830. A new collection received an official headquarters in 1831. The structure, known as the Ivy Building because of the foliage scaling its walls, was constructed just north of Demosthenian Hall. By 1862, the Library had amassed 18,250 volumes and needed expanded facilities. A new library building was erected adjacent to the original one. In 1905 the old and newer structures were joined by the construction of a Corinthian portico across the front. This structure, known as the Academic Building today, did not continue to house the collection, however. Around the turn of the century George Foster Peabody donated money to construct a new library. This facility, the neoclassical building which presently is the University of Georgia Administration Building, was built in 1905. In 1952 a much larger building with 146,900 square feet (13,650 m) was ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=12329405 ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Encompassing the artist's entire oeurve
In his opening chapter, Charles C Eldredge, professor of art at the University of Kansas, writes at length about the indomitable Georgia O'Keeffe and in the succeeding chapters to as he looks at various aspects of her work under the headings: Abstraction, Lake Georgia, Fruit and Leaf, Flower, City, Desert, Bone and Sky. In doing so he encompasses O'Keeffe's complete oeuvre. He concludes his study with a chronology and a selected bibliography.

The book is illustrated throughout with around 55 colour plates and over 5o black and white illustrations, including some pictures published here for the first time. The majority of the colour plates and a few of the monochromes are full page.

This is a well produced large format book printed on heavy stock, the text is interesting and accessible; and it is enlightening to see the wide range of the artist's output, and the familiar alongside to unfamiliar.
