5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
I would highly recommend this book to anyone embarking upon the task of teaching poetry to students. It is a quick read with lots of ideas that you can implement into your teaching repertoire immediately.I particularly liked the poetry center study ideas, the student poetry samples throughout the book (many in the student's own handwriting), the anthology of student poetry, as well as, the mentor texts listed in Appendix B.This book has been most inspirational.I can't wait to begin using the information presented to help my students to appreciate poetry and to become poets. Additionally, after reading this book I am anxious to begin my own personal journey into writing poetry. Lastly, I would also recommend that you read Ms. Heard's book "For the Good of the Earth and Sun."

5-0 out of 5 stars Got it quick w/standard delivery
Book was exactly as described. It was shipped asap (I chose standard delivery) & I had it w/in a week.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
I am a middle school teacher who found this book full of useful ideas which I have incorporated into my poetry unit.I also have Ms. Heard's book, For the Good of the Earth and Sun,and I found this one (Heart)to contain more practical lessons on poetry mechanics. She describes the how-to's of poetic language, form, rhythm and rhyme, etc, which were easily adapted to fit my students' needs.I did have to do a lot of reading and typing (no ready-to-copy pages) but it was worth the effort.I esp loved the heart mapping and the six-room description process.

4-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for Language Arts teachers at all grade levels!
Georgia Heard's book Awakening the Heart:Exploring Poetry in Elementary and Middle School suggests ways for teachers to help students have positive, successful experiences with appreciating poetry and creating their own poems.Heard gives poetry workshops for teachers and has worked in many classrooms with students at different grade levels in schools across the country. Her book,Awakening the Heart, reflects how far our understanding of the teaching of poetry has come:students will not come to see themselves as poets if poetry instruction is relegated to a "poetry unit" after state tests have been administered.

Heard's book reaches outto teachers who haven't taught poetry in a workshop format before in that it offers the same descriptions of poetry and poetic terms that she uses when she speaks to students, reteaching us the essentials of poetry as we prepare to teach others. She gives examples of directions useful in explaining the centers to students, and includes student work produced in classrooms Heard has worked in.The reader gains the confidence that taking time to gain inspiration from Heard's minilessons, coupled with dedication to a positive classroom environment that integrates poetry into daily life, will really help students to become poets who read poetry with understanding and craft it thoughtfully.

5-0 out of 5 stars Add Depth to you Poetry Instruction
I used this book as a basis for starting a poetry study in my classroom of 4th graders. The information and ideas that Ms. Heard gives are fantastic. It helps you create an poetry friendly environment, not just a few lessons. My students responded whole-heartedly to the suggested activities. The heart map activity was one of their favorites. She gives advice on how to help children write from their hearts and access true emotion (as opposed to writing about surface feelings,"I like my Nintendo").This is the best poetry book for classroom instruction that I've found. Also, it is an easy and quick read.
I saw her speak on this book at Regis University in June 2003, she is an engaging speaker and it made me love the book even more. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars 33pgs are OK, The rest is just a reference
If you want a basic idea of what you need to do to get your kid into a school and some basics, this is not a bad book. The first 33 pages has some good information but its only 33 pages. This information is likely available elsewhere on the internet. I give this 4 stars for the first 33 pages and 2 stars for the rest.

The rest of the book is a listing of schools and information on them. There is nothing in the listing that will give you rankings of the school nor recommendation so its just a reference and a list of all the schools. Most if not all the info you can get of the net but it is nice to have it all in one place so finding all the school online becomes easier. Worth $5-7 so get it used.

This book is much better than the 13th ed of Independant school guide. The format is much better and easier to read and the front pages are better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time
Trolling the school web sites gave me more information than this book. It's very factual and really doesn't get into school character, etc.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Helpful At All
This book is just fine if all you want is the private school closest to you, or want very cut and dry facts which you can find for free at the schools websites or in their prospectus. If you are looking for insider information, or anything to tell you what the school is really like, look elsewhere. I recommend saving your money for your kid's education.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Informative
On returning to live in the DC area with two small children after having lived in another part of the country, I picked up this book and found a wealth of useful information about schools. The book not only gives practical information, but provides thoughtful and rare insight into the various strengths and weaknesses of each school, as well as valuable guidance on how to pick the best school for a particular child.I recommend this book highly.

Product Description
On the heels of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education, the Georgia General Assembly enacted a series of massive anti-desegregation laws to stand in opposition to the federal mandate. Governor Ernest Vandiver was elected with an overwhelming majority after promising to close every school if even "one Negro" entered a white classroom. While the fight for segregated schools was certainly strong, a small group of women in Atlanta's white community played a radical role in bringing peaceful desegregation to the Georgia school system. This book tells the story of HOPE (Help Our Public Education), beginning with a small neighborhood coffee chat then growing through mail and meeting campaigns across the state. The women of HOPE changed the school crisis from politics-as-usual to public controversy. Based on factual material found in library special collections, books, newspapers, transcripts, symposiums, and several interviews, this book honors and tells the story of a small group of courageous, hard-working women credited with creating a public climate in which peaceful desegregation was possible. ... Product Description
In School for Hawaiian Girls, first-time novelist Georgia Ka’apuni McMillen chronicles the inner workings of a native-Hawaiian family overcoming poverty to achieve wealth and independence. This tale of rags-to-riches is uniquely rendered as the author peels back the story of heroism and self-sacrifice. Underneath, she reveals a deep wound that plagues this family as it binds it together in secrecy, the 1922 murder of their 16-year-old sister, Lydia.

While most murder mysteries grapple with whodunit, School for Hawaiian Girls focuses on the surviving siblings’ struggle with the first mystery presented, how to go on living after the murder. With an unflinching eye, the author follows the family’s decision to stop speaking of Lydia and its tragic consequence over the next two generations. This leads to the second mystery, how they might remember Lydia and who they were - and learn to understand who they have become. What is the cost of forgetting? What is the value of remembering? These questions are at the heart of this debut work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An engaging and deftly written novel
Set in Hawaii in the early 20th century, School For Hawaiian Girls by Georgia Ka'apuni McMillen is an engaging and deftly written novel about the family of a murdered Hawaiian schoolgirl. The murder investigation is fraught with errors and sloppy policework, so the family copes by not speaking of the murder, or of the daughter they lost. But their silence and denial takes a toll on them, and they must grapple with the price of forgetting and what it means to remember, in this charged and emotional tale of the human psyche.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Concise and Engrossing"
Lydia attends the School for Hawaiian Girls on the Big Island of Hawaii in 1922. When she becomes pregnant, her mother ships her off to Maui, forcing her to give up her illegitimate child. A year later, on her way to find her daughter, Lydia's body is found in the cane field. Raped and her throat slashed, she is soon forgotten by everyone but her family.

Moani owns a kayaking business in Honolulu in 1985. Taking care of her mentally disabled sister, Pua, she dreams of buying the School for Hawaiian Girls and turning it into a hotel. In her attempt to purchase the land, she uncovers information about her family, and Lydia's death, and discovers that the past is never completely buried.

"School for Hawaiian Girls" spans several generations, tying together Lydia's murder with Moani's mundane life. Despite the grisly death, the novel is less a "whodunit" than a tale about the mysteries of family. Several plots are interwoven by the use of various narrators, giving the reader a broader perspective. The different voices can be a bit redundant at times, but the threads of the story twine together well overall.

Georgia Ka'apuni McMillen gives each character/narrator a strong and distinct voice. While not always likable, Sam sheds light on his sister's murder and the factors behind it. Moani, his great-niece, possesses an equally strong presence as she attempts to succeed without her family's dubious assistance.

Supported by a number of secondary characters, several of whom get a chance to tell their story, these protagonists all breathe on the page. The advantage of the multiple points of view is that no one comes across as perfect -- rather, only human. The complexity of the characters keeps you reading even once the murderer is uncovered.

McMillen's writing style is concise and engrossing, steeped in the distinct dialect of the Hawaiian islands. For those not familiar with the Hawaiian pidgin dialect, certain phrases might seem confusing, but it allows for an authenticity of place and person. The ending feels abrupt and leaves several small threads dangling, but compared to the overall story, this flaw is minor.

"School for Hawaiian Girls" is not a murder mystery, but a complex story of generations and the "sins of the fathers" visited on the descendants. It's also a carefully woven tale of the conflict between the missionary influence and the native Hawaiian culture, and the resulting problems and prejudices that arose between the two. Most of all, however, it's a story of the interconnectedness of the islands and its families. If you think that Hawaii is simply palm trees and paradise, you'll learn a valuable lesson from "School for Hawaiian Girls."

5-0 out of 5 stars You must read School for Hawaiian Girls
I found this book impossible to put down once I started reading. I do not read a lot but thought this subject looked interesting to me. The book gives us a glimpse into the culture and lives of the Hawaiian people. Coming from the midwest I found this story very interesting. This is NOT your usual read. M's McMillen did a thorough job of catching my interest throughout the entire book. I hope there is a second book in the coming.

After reading this book I found a renewed interest in searching out new authors to read.

I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hell comes to Paradise
The 1920s rape & murder of a student at the Christian run School for Hawaiian Girls, was never solved. No one was ever convicted & no white man's justice ever meted out.

Lydia had been a beautiful girl on the edge of womanhood. Loved by two powerful boys, she already had a secret. She was also the target of the headmistress' upbraiding for falling short of her potential.

Told in a fierce chorus of voices, SCHOOL FOR HAWAIIAN GIRLS speaks of memories of a dreadful past & prayers for a hopeful future. There are two terribly warped boys, one the son of the preacher man & the other, caught between the death of his parents' culture & a future in the white man's world; a grandniece of the slain Lydia, a woman now in her thirties with a thriving tourist canoe business & a curiosity to purchase the abandoned school house & make a hotel out of it; & the acid memories & jaundiced nostalgia of the preacher's other child, his daughter, who was once the respected headmistress of the long defunct school.

Everyone has secrets they'd rather not have exposed & everyone feels impelled to do something about keeping those secrets silent.

SCHOOL FOR HAWAIIAN GIRLS is a haunting, fierce & vivid parable about what happens when one culture conquers another & by fair means & foul, sets about humiliating & eradicating their way of life. When Westerners came into Paradise carting their self-righteous mores & their own personal demons, they expected the native population to be grateful for its re-education. What they got was a living hell of suspicions, superstitions & soul-destroying tragedy.

A stunning, satisfying mystery, well written & finely tuned with a glimpse of the lush paradise islands & the dark impulses that drive us humans into our misery!

A taut thriller with liberal doses of redemption - a super read! ... Read more
