Product Description
With more than 100 original recipes to choose from, readers can create such delights as crusty farm breads, peasant one-pot dinners, and luscious spring soups in the traditions of classic Pennsylvania Dutch cookery as it has evolved over the past 300 years. 175 illustrations.Amazon.com Review
Long before the rest of America decided to get back to healthy basics in their cooking and eating habits, the Pennsylvania Dutch were happily living off the land. Among their fertile, rolling hills and lush green fields, these farm folk speak about their distinctive cuisine in a language that, in some parts of the United States, has been spoken longer than English. Pennsylfaanisch names grace every recipe in Pennsylvania Dutch Country Cooking, and to help non-Pennsylfaanisch speakers with pronunciation, there's a guide and even a glossary of additional food terms. But what's in a name? It's the cooking that counts in this compendium of more than 100 authentic recipes that are both delicious and healthy. There are recipes for breads, soups and noodles, meats, vegetables, and even a section for special holiday feasts. There are beverages such as Wheatland Harvest Tea, made from spearmint, lemon balm, tarragon, and bergamot leaves; desserts such as Hickory Nut Dumplings, served with stewed peaches; and recipes for rye, buckeye, sourdough, and potato breads, among many others.

As if the recipes alone weren't enough, Pennsylvania Dutch Country Cooking is brimming with photographs of the countryside, the gardens, the people, and, of course, the foods of this special place. This is a book that feeds the soul as well as the body, a feast for the eyes as well as the table. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great addtion--great recipes!
I was never much into cooking, I have been more of an eatin' out kind of gal.Well, now I work from home, and it gives me time to delve into the array of antique and out of print cookbooks I have ammassed from inheritance, or gifts, etc.

I keep going to this book over and over again, for both simple, tradtional german or austrian recipes, to ornate, complicated dishes that require a week of preparation.

Although many of the recipes are a bit outdated, as the ingredients and cuts are hard to find, this book is great in that it is the best of both worlds--it even has multiple recipies for potato dumplings--one more complicated and time consuming, one simple for last minuite addition to the family meal.

Very few mistakes as well--every recipe I have tried has come out well on the first attempt.Although I have not gotten to the desserts yet.... ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not really useful
Just returned from a 10 day trip wandering around a variety of cities in Germany mostly in the southern part.I had taken the Marling Menu Master along with me because of how valuable it had been on a previous trip in the mid 1980's.Well on this trip it was basically useless. Here's why:#1 - the menu-master was originally written in 1971 and has not been updated since.Of course German cuisine has moved on since 1971.#2 - the menu master was basically useless for the regional cuisine I encountered in the southern region of Germany. Finally English is much more prevalent than what I had experienced on my last trip - of long ago.So I would have to say you'd be better off with a decent German dictionary than the menu master.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE VERY LATE Menu Master
The Markling menue Master is great.Unfortunately the shipper was NOT great. The book didn't arrive for over a month (well after we return ed from out trip).I will never order from the again.

5-0 out of 5 stars a foodie essential
A significant part of the reason I love to travel is discovering regional specialties.Even when German restaurants offer an English menu (particularly in tourist areas), the translations are simply awful. This tiny book makes it possible to figure out what's being offered on a restaurant menu, and to choose the best options. It's organized the same waya German menu is, which makes finding items easy and fast. (I also like The Hungry Traveler Germany, as you'll see from my review of that book.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it
Small enough to fit in a pocket and carry with you everywhere, this guide to translating the menus in Germany should be with you in every restaurant.

I read it on the plane and was able to know what I was ordering at the first meal. My co-workers thought that I spoke German because I knew exactly what I wanted and exactly what I was getting.

Thank you to the author. You made my trip a pleasant one.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Guessing
I used the Menu Master (I call it a Menu Finder) for eight months in Germany.I also briefly used the French edition in France, and the Italian edition in Italy. My general comments are the same for all three.I look forward to using the Spanish edition someday.

A small, hip pocket, book bound in vinyl it can see rough service virtually anywhere. It is easy to use from Suppe zu den NĂ¼sse (soup to nuts). And is actually organized from the appetizer to dessert. It is thorough in identifying the different preparations and nuances in service.Once you read the instructions and do the menu exercise included at the back, you will have little or no trouble ordering your favorites.Believe me, it is good to know the difference between Schinken (Ham) and Schnecken (Snails)... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a beautiful, fabulous cookbook!
I love this cookbook!Of course, I never thought to get any of my Bavarian grandmother's recipes from her before she passed away, so for years, I've sought out great recipes for spatzle, stollen, red cabbage, German potato salad, hearty meat dishes and many others. This book has wonderful recipes.Every large page is filled with lavish photos of the food during the preparation stages and the finished dish! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The new and expanded edition of an ethnic culinary classic
This new and expanded edition of an ethnic culinary classic provides a solid and important introduction to a cuisine which all too rarely receives its own book outside of general European cooking. Three new chapters to this edition of Peter Trnka's Best Of Czech Cooking add focus on pork, mushrooms and drinks, while the remainder is filled with Czech basics. No photos, but the recipes are easy enough without them.

1-0 out of 5 stars Real Czech cooking without pork? Unimaginable!
The major handicap of this book is the almost complete lack of pork dishes, so typical and essential in Bohemian and Moravian cooking. More or less authentic Czech sausages and hams may be hard to come by in the US,but is there a shortage of pork meat? So, the book misses a major part ofthe better dishes that Czech cooking has to offer. I would advise theeditors of Hippocrene Books to check the subjects in their publications alittle bit more carefully.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic recipes
Interesting author notes on most recipes.Certainly the author had an interesting childhood and fortunately was able to retain and record her Grandmother's cooking talent. Not many surprises in the recipes but good, honest fare.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just like Mom's cooking
My mother died a few years back and while dealing with the flood of memories I realized that with the exception of her chili (it was truly awful), she was a darn good cook.Since she was a native of Germany, she had several dishes that I now found myself missing.I also realized that I was too stupid when I was growing up to ask her how to cook.As a result, I could seldom find German restaurant food as tasty as hers.

Well, I searched around a bit online and in the library and the "authentic" German cookbooks I found didn't represent the kind of cooking my Mom had done, until I found this book. As soon as I saw the sample recipe for Jaeger Schnitzel, and prepaped it, I knew I was in business.

This book has some tasty recipes in it.I recommend it if you are missing your German mother's cooking too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes, but missing some essentials
The recipes in this book are great, this is true, but there are some essential recipes missing, mainly in one category. The wonderful tomato salads and cucumber salads aren't in this book, and anyone who has had these knows what I mean. There are also a couple of bread spreads very typical to Germany that aren't listed, but otherwise, this book is great. It looks like they even have the best recipe for Bienenstich (Bee sting cake) that I've ever seen here in the states and one that should actually work for a change.I'm keeping this book for sure.

5-0 out of 5 stars I buy a second one!
Hi, my name is Peggy and I'm from Germany and spent right now one year in my host family.I was looking for a christmas present and decided to give a german cookbook. But it was not as easy as I thought until I found this one. I ordered it (without reading the recipes- difficult) and after I got it I took a look in there and it really brought a smile in my face to see all the recipes I like and we used to cook in Germany. And that's why I decided to buy a second one and cook more often for the people I like. If you are looking for a cookbook with authentic recipes- here it is! Try it- you'll never regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Cookbooks I've Ever Used
I love German food, and after having lived in Germany for several years and moved back to the states I really missed authentic German cooking. Then I found this book, and I now use it at least twice a week if not moreoften. It is easy to follow and the added hints makes the recipies unique. I have recommended this book to many of my friends, and co-workers.And Inow recommend it to you.Our favorite is the German Hamburger and potatoepancakes. And I can honestly say it tastes just like a German grandmotherswould.Use it and enjoy! ... Product Description
This book, by history and photograph, recipe and anecdote, recounts the lately forgotten story of the Germans in Milwaukee and the profound influence these German-speaking immigrants and their descendants had upon the dynamic city of today. Author Trudy Knauss Paradis, with the assistance of E.J. Brumder, beautifully sets forth this extraordinary history; from the early German-speaking arrivals to Milwaukee County in the 1830s, to the vibrant "German Athens on Lake Michigan" which these immigrants and their children created, to the suppression of German identity following the two World Wars, to the renaissance of German ancestral pride of today. Together, Ms. Knauss Paradis, Director-in-Charge of Cultural Exhibition for German Fest Milwaukee and a child of German-born immigrants; and Mr. Brumder, local historian and scion of the Brumder German-language publishing empire, provide a well-rounded view of not only what it has meant and still means to be "German" in Milwaukee, but also an insightful portrayal of an often brilliant, culturally vibrant and always industrious community which has enriched Milwaukee at every conceivable level. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for those interested in Milwaukee history
As a Milwaukee resident with German roots, I better understood my heritage from this book.I remembered my grandmother cooking many of these recipes.Since I also teach local history, many parts were useful to my students as well such as sections on the Civil War, Miller and Usingers. Many of the photos were ones I hadn't seen in other books.A great keepsake.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of German Milwaukee
Historically wonderful and full of pictures and articles.Regarding German language accuracy, the language has evolved and is not an issue.Excellent recipes. If you are interested in the book get it while supplies last. There was only one print run.
