Product Description
Adding her stimulating and finely framed ethnography to recent work in the anthropology of the senses, Kathryn Geurts investigates the cultural meaning system and resulting sensorium of Anlo-Ewe-speaking people in southeastern Ghana. Geurts discovered that the five-senses model has little relevance in Anlo culture, where balance is a sense, and balancing (in a physical and psychological sense as well as in literal and metaphorical ways) is an essential component of what it means to be human.

Much of perception falls into an Anlo category of seselelame (literally feel-feel-at-flesh-inside), in which what might be considered sensory input, including the Western sixth-sense notion of "intuition," comes from bodily feeling and the interior milieu. The kind of mind-body dichotomy that pervades Western European-Anglo American cultural traditions and philosophical thought is absent. Geurts relates how Anlo society privileges and elaborates what we would call kinesthesia, which most Americans would not even identify as a sense. After this nuanced exploration of an Anlo-Ewe theory of inner states and their way of delineating external experience, readers will never again take for granted the "naturalness" of sight, touch, taste, hearing, and smell. ... Ø More than 1.2 million people die in road traffic crashes every yearØ As many as 50 million people are injured or disabled by road traffic crashes every yearØ Road traffic crashes cost countries up to 4% of their Gross National ProductØ Correctly used seat-belts reduce the risk of death in a crash by 61%Ø Mandatory use of child restraints can reduce child deaths by 35%Ø Helmets reduce fatal and serious head injuries by up to 45%Ø Enforcing a drinking and driving law around the world could reduce alcohol-related crashes by 20% (WHO, 2005). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Africa has the world's highest rate of road fatalities per capita. For example, the statistics indicate that 2,043 people perished in road accidents in 2007 in Ghana alone compared to 1,858 people who died in 2006. Many factors contribute to road accidents in Africa. The notable ones include bribery and corruption. "While the focus of this book is Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa, for obvious reasons, nonetheless, Stopping the Carnage on African Roads is unmistakably germane to the totality of the dismal traffic situation in Africa at large. In this sense, the expansive title of the book is all the more appropriate. In sum, on the critical subject of preventable road carnage in Africa, Mr. Bonna is one, among a dispiritingly low number of writers and intellectuals, who knows exactly what he is talking about. In essence, the author's argument revolves around the salutary, commonsensical and imperative need for postcolonial African governments to ensure that the auspicious facility of vehicular transportation is safely and productively engaged. The latter observation, of course, implies the stringent and impartial enforcement of transit laws and penalties." (Kwame Okoampa-Ahoofe, Jr., Ph.D., Bronx, New York). ... Read more

Product Description

In workingto build a sense of nationhood, Ghana has focused on many social engineering projects, the most meaningful and fascinating of which has been the state's effort to create a national culture through its schools. As Cati Coe reveals in Dilemmas of Culture in African Schools, this effort has created an unusual paradox: while Ghana encourages its educators to teach about local cultural traditions, those traditions are transformed as they are taught in school classrooms. The state version of culture now taught by educators has become objectified and nationalized—vastly different from local traditions.

Coe identifies the state's limitations in teaching cultural knowledge and discusses how Ghanaians negotiate the tensions raised by the competing visions of modernity that nationalism and Christianity have created. She reveals how cultural curricula affect authority relations in local social organizations—between teachers and students, between Christians and national elite, and between children and elders—and raises several questions about educational processes, state-society relations, the production of knowledge, and the making of Ghana's citizenry.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wisdom?
If you are looking for scholarly criticism on the works of Armah or Cheatwood, look elsewhere.I can succinctly describe the contents of this book thusly:if I had written any of the three chapters in this slim volume as a book report for a sophomore lit class, I would have fervently hoped for a B, but I would have accepted a C+ without complaint.

If you've read any of the works under discussion, you'll already know far more about it than you could learn from this book; all you'll get here is a lot of summary along with some simplistic analysis. As for the packaging, it's strictly cheap-o cheap-o productions.I truly can't see a reason for this book, other than as an attempt to capitalize on a couple of famous names. The book is overpriced by precisely the amount you'll pay for it, and the hour or so it takes to read it would be far better spent reading Armah and Cheatwood themselves. ... Product Description
This book examines the relationship between the press and the government in Ghana from 1822 to 1992. It provides a critical, historical, and analytical perspective for understanding the origins of, the present status of, and the outlook for the future of the Ghanian press. The author documents decisions and actions taken by the respective regimes regarding the press and press freedom issues -- from the colonial period of the 1820s to the immediate post-independence era of the late 1950s to the revolutionary transformation period of the 1980s and early 1990s. Asante also analyzes the media's role in helping to nationally develop and integrate the developing country Ghana. "The Press in Ghana" is comprehensive in scope, yet organized systematically and straightforwardly. Written simply and clearly, the discussions move chronologically from one regime to another. Succinct summaries at the end of each chapter highlight social, economic, and political policies and programs of each regime. Visuals include maps and black-and-white captioned photographs of Ghana's political leaders. This well-researched and cogently written work will be an indispensable tool in courses on international communication, mass communication and society, and surveys of foreign press systems. ... Product Description

This book examines Fanti kinship terminology from a variety of analytic and formal perspectives. Based on work with a broad number of informants, David B. Kronenfeld details and analyzes internal variation in usage within the Fanti community, shows the relationship between terminology and social groups and communicative usage, and relates these findings to major theoretical work on kinship and on the intersections of language, thought, and culture. Including computational and comparative studies of kinship terminologies, this volume represents the fullest analysis of any kinship terminological system in the ethnographic record.

Product Description
This collection brings together essays written over a thirty-five year period. They reflect James Gibbs's position vis-à-vis the Ghanaian theatre as sometimes a remote onlooker, sometimes an enthusiastic participant observer, deeply involved in issues of perception and influence in a society moving through colonialism to nationalism, independence and beyond. The main body of the book is divided into four sections. The first, "Outsiders and Activists," looks at theatre for community development during the late 1940s, some connections between drama and film, and the astonishing involvement in Ghanaian performance culture of the Haitian poet and playwright Felix Morisseau-Leroy. The second section, "Intercultural Encounters," examines ways in which classic Greek drama has been used by producers and writers in West Africa, with special reference to Victor Yankah, Kobina Sekyi (Ghana's first published playwright), and the Nigerian Femi Osofisan. Section Three, "Plays and Playwrights," concentrates on Efua Sutherland, Ama Ata Aidoo, and Joe de Graft. This section uncovers issues of documentation and achievement that draw attention to the need for investment in organising resources for writing Ghana's theatre history. The volume draws to a close with personal accounts of touring student productions in the 1960s (with due attention to the influence of Bertolt Brecht) and of involvement in a British film production on location. The book closes with an updated complete bibliography of Ghana's chief dramatist, Efua Sutherland. ... Read more

Product Description
The road to John Agyekum Kufuor’s presidency was tortuous and reflects Ghana’s political history, which since Kwame Nkrumah led to independence in 1957 and had been dominated by military interventions and dictatorships.Groomed for this job by some of Ghana’s first generation politician, Kufuor became Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister of Ghana at 30 after attending Oxford University. And he has since known no other profession. Woven in politics of Ghana especially the 1990s in which he was a major player, Kufuor’s election to the high office was also critical for democratic development in Ghana. Since 1957, there has never been a successful transition of power from one government to another, without some disruption—and this book captures some of those momentous events as well.

"A good biography reveals not only the life of its subjects but also the times in which the person lived. If the biography is of a politician, the book should encompass insights into the politics of the era. Ivor Agyeman-Duah’s book about President J. A. Kufuor achieves that fusion of narrative between the biography of a man and the history of a country.

--Ali A. Mazrui, Albert Schweitzer Professor in the Humanities, State University of New York

"Ivor Agyeman-Duah draws on extensive knowledge of orally transmitted materials and interprets these with reference to evidence drawn from a broad range of documentary sources. Between Faith and History follows this exemplary style. He thus exemplifies the ability to combine traditional and modern scholarship that was characteristic of the seminal researches of his late and revered father, Joseph Agyeman-Duah.."
